Apparently they did, or she would have noted his badges of courage from his still recent guard-beating. "Very observant! An' yer rather rodentish about th'mouth." He grinned, giving another long swallow of water befor lowering a couple tentacles under the table. Hoping he was being nonchalant, he dribbled a bit over his almost amphibious-like skin in a quick motion, rubbing them along his legs where he had started to dry out.

The beaver sniffed and picked up her plate. G-d, but this man was so...so annoying. And childish. And nasty-looking.

"Are you sure you don't want to tell me your name?" she asked as civily as she could. At the very least, she could leave the cafeteria and go somewhere -anywhere- else. And she could ask who the tentacled freak was. Someone was bound to know.

"Last time I jes' told someone me name, they tried t'eat me. Th'time b'for tha' they tried t'drown me. Y'can understand me apprehension. What d'y'want?" After the incidents with Jamal and Chubbs, his little game had turned into a survival tactic.

Chana raised her eyebrows at that. Who would have wanted to try to kill this man? He wasn't Zach, or Jamal...or, wait. Hadn't Lily said something about a Mr. Reedy being dangerous too?

But that would be his attacker. Not him.

"Look, I never heard someone was growing tentacles. And you don't look like a killer, so I probably haven't been warned about you. Can't you just tell me your name?" she asked, for the final time. Seriously. If he didn't give her a straight answer now, she was leaving, and that would be that.

His odd, slightly changed eyes flickered over her in quiet concideration for a few moments befor he reached for another piece of fish, "William. Friends call me Billy. Happy, Chana?"

The beaver girl flashed him a big smile. "I am now. Happy that is. Todah Billy," she told him as she put her dishes away and then left the cafeteria.

Maybe he wasn't all bad. At least he could be civil when he wanted to be.

Billy blinked as she left abruptly, giving a sigh as he shook his head. Ever the talented conversationalist, wasn't he?

The last remains of that one huge meal (whatever it had been) were at last digested, and Cass was hungry again. Though a certain part of her was inclined to attempt to repeat the situation, that seemed like rather a daunting task.

Later. Another time, as she kept telling herself.

But for now, she needed food. Cass hesitated as she left the cafeteria line, clutching a plate stacked with a couple of blue beef steaks. Today she apparently had been feeling rather more human than was usual, since she'd gone to the trouble of putting on a shirt, even if it was only a halter top.

Zach scratched at some reddish, chain link-shaped grooves on his chest that had been temporarily dug into his skin, accompanied by quite a few others of the same type or a smoother variety. He was shaking all over, and looked a little more pallid under the constant red tinge. It wasn't so much from the mental state he was in so much as that he'd been unable to keep the contents of his stomach down ten minutes after he'd returned to his duplex from the lab. The photographs of Aubrey's wounds were disturbing - it was merely a delayed reaction.

He darted into the cafeteria quickly. He was so preoccupied with not being seen that instead of a cooked steak he had grabbed a raw one. No longer having to deal with the usual annoying balancing act he'd had to pull up until a week before, he carried his tray to put down on a table.

There was a flash of something green and rainbow-colored out of the corner of his eye. He turned, his finlike ears twitching a little. The snake woman looked awfully familiar... "Cassidy!"

Cass looked up, and froze automatically. She didn't know any red lizardy people, did she? Apparently he knew her. Yet, there was something familiar about the hair, the face, the voice. Her tongue flicked out, and though the scent had changed, she knew that, too.

But the last time she'd seen him, he'd been short a limb.

"...Zach?" Her voice was full of astonishment. She slithered over, clutching her plate tightly. "Is that you? Really?"

It hadn't been that long since she'd seen him, surely? Not long enough for him to change this much!

He let go of the tray completely so that he could face her. His hands were still shaking a little, and any moment not spent making eye contact with Cassidy was one of glancing around the room in a paranoid fashion. If Cassidy had ever made so much as a slight assumption that he had some inner strength, she would have found herself horribly wrong at the sight.

"Y-yeah... it's been a while, hasn't it?" he grinned nervously, his tail lashing a little behind him. Like Cassidy, his eyes were also nothing but black slits on a yellow background, so they conveyed little emotion without the aid of his eyebrows. "G-glad to see they haven't ch-changed you any more..."

"No," she said. "Not yet."

Cassidy tilted her head slightly, her tongue flicking again. "You look awful," she said, and immediately cursed herself for it. "I mean. Ah, damn. I don't mean the scales and stuff. I mean you look like you saw a ghost. Or like you're sick. Are you okay?"

She slithered forward a little, and set her tray beside his on the table. "Did you just change? Was it a bad one?" She wasn't entirely sure what was going on with the wing-like fins that were growing out of his back, but they had to have hurt like hell. "Is that it?"

His wings flapped a little, spasming a bit as they hadn't been able to while he'd been tied up. They were so underdeveloped that he had difficulty managing the muscles. His tail was hard enough to keep track of in a mind built only for four limbs and used to three.

"Change? Hah. Oh, oh no... n-not that recently..." He turned the chair in front of him around so that he could sit on it without crushing his tail. "But I've been told that's the... source... of the problem."

He held his head between both of his mismatched hands, eyes still wide and practically unblinking. "Cassidy, I... I'm the one who attacked Aubrey."

"Oh, my god."

The feathers on her shoulder fluffed themselves a little. After a cusory and dismissive glance at a chair, she settled herself down in a coil on the floor. Cass struggled for words for a moment, one hand just grazing her lower lip. She'd almost forgotten about Aubrey's predicament, caught up in her own woes. "Do... do they know? Am I obliged to turn you in now? 'Cause I'm not sure I want to do that, exactly."
