They're backwards compatible with PS1 games but not PS2 games. Yeah I don't get it either.
But the PS3 is awesome if only for the exclusives like LittleBigPlanet or Uncharted (I've never played the first one but Uncharted 2 made me c**). And just being able to play cross-platform games that come out for everything but the Wii is nice. I got a bit tired of having friends be like "D00D YOU SHOULD PLAY THIS" and me being like "durr i can't..." Red Dead Redemption, Castlevania Lords of Shadoooow... AND MOOORE
Some cool downloadable stuff too, like Flower, the PixelJunk games, or SCOTT PILGRIIIIIM
but I mean... if you're not into shooting... or... God of War type stuff... then... I dunno. Darksiders is cool if you're big into Zelda. IT IS ZELDA WITH BLOOD... AND GUNS... AND ALSO PORTALS (but that part sucks)

Playstation games are emulated through software. The PS3 is capable of emulating the PS2, I think, but they're probably holding out... or it simply doesn't work well.
I'm gonna guess the former is true.

I'd probably get a PS3 eventually if it could play PS2 games. It's a decent package and there are some games I'd like to play eventually, but that spans both consoles. I guess you can download a lot of PS2 games, though, so maybe I still will sometime.

I looked it up. Wikipedia This was due to the removal of "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU, which stripped the units of all PlayStation 2 based hardware. It's not really a big deal for me, since I wanted one for PS3 games... plus all the PS2 stuff I actually wanted to play is coming out for PS3, in sexy-a** HD mmm hot

The new PS3s don't play PS2 games?! That's garbage. Good to know, though. I've played PS2 games with my friend on her ghetto old PS3 and it was totally fine, so Imma keep an eye out for one of those. It'll probably be cheaper and it won't come packaged with two games that I have no interest in.
I was gonna get the MJ Experience for Wii but they made the 360/PS3 version better... I can't believe I'm actually considering getting a Move now. xd Hopefully it works with the old PS3.

Oh, the PS3 can play Some PS2 games, always, but you have to pay for them a second time.

[Kegan] And the ones that are backwards compatible look like s**t because Sony was too cheap to shell out for the component that did like... anti aliasing, I think. So it's all pixelated. Actually, they fixed that a long time ago. My brother still has one of the old backwards-compatible ones. We just don't play PS2 games on it because we're bored of the PS2.
