Vintrict No. This isn't the Sex Olympics. And I don't know why you're going against someone with just a staff and your natural abilities when that someone has a six foot katana. The range advantage is clearly in his favor, as long as he uses the weapon right. Well, maybe it's the fact that I want to try it? And there was something else... Oh, yeah. That's it. I don't have super-strength, and there's a FOOT-THICK BARRIER between my character and his element. Drejak can't manipulate earth unless he can actually TOUCH it to begin with. I stated that VERY clearly in my profile. So, I'd rather not try to dig a hole in the floor while he's swinging a sword at my neck. So, I'll take trying to get inside his range and ******** him up beast-style over the dodge-and-dig game that you've presented my particular character with. ^_^

If I had a staff and someone had a 6 foot ******** long sword, I'd quarterstaff that s**t and beat him until he stops moving.
Of course, I play a character who's crazy enough to simply impale himself on the sword just to prevent the other guy from using it properly, but still.

Using a blade weapon in a non lethal tournament is already giving you a high risk of killing your opponent. That's why people with swords are more gimped than those without lethal weapons because they can't go for their normal kills, though I see a lot of people do those moves away. For example, Vince was going to stab Sin's character through the stomach with his sword if he didn't get killed like he did, so basically, there was a good chance he would have been DQ'd instead.
That's why if you use any lethal method and manage to kill your opponent, the odds will be stacked more against the attacker. However, we still consider the case where someone might have just let their character die to try to get a win. Then, we gauge accordingly.

You know that sounds crazy at a glance, but then you realize impaling yourself on Sephiroth's sword is a documented, winning tactic.
It's like his only weakness, really.

I haven't taken all the time to look into everything I can do with my weapon. I'm trying, and I want to do the research. Hell, I'd like to actually learn the fighting style, honestly, but I haven't had the time/funds. So, I'll have to look up quarterstaffing later.

...am I allowed to provide helpful links?
Since I'm willing to provide them for everyone, after all, and I'd rather have people have a basic understanding of what they're doing just to make the FITES better and more fun to read.

I rather you not coach until after the round, but there's nothing stopping me from you guys secretly meeting on msn, so there's no point anyway.

It's not really favoritism either way if a Judge gives someone a helpful link that describes their weapon or the way its used. It's still up to the player to deem what moves suit the situation, as well as how to execute them. It would be more like coaching if someone was telling him specifically what counter or attack to use at a given time.
But being like "This is a picture of a sword, you poke people with the pointy end, see this picture" isn't cheating. xp

Honestly, I'd just be saving him one to five minutes of Googling, and I'm willing to provide handy links to anyone who asks.
But, I'll refrain until after the round, unless Vin says otherwise. He's DABOSS.
