Also, I take it in a half-and-half approach. I try to put myself in my character's mentality, certain music making that process much easier, then post using IC gained knowledge as though I were he.
Makes for a more believable character at times, even out of otherwise unbelievable personalities.
On the competitive spectrum, take you Darth. Omi wants to knock Deitric down a peg pretty badly, not even due to being defeated but from what he perceives as a superiority complex. Anyone in "power" rubs him the wrong way unless they're overtly on his side, and even then they're usually just tolerated. And though he knows very little about Deitric on a personal level, multi-year champion places him in a status of power in Omi's eyes.
On the roleplayer side, I would like a satisfying win to happen for him, but I'm not going "<******** YEAH I'M GONNA KICK DARTH'S b***h a** THIS TIME HGNGNG"
