"Well... yes there is that," Miyuki replied, "But River already said 'if' so that's kind of a given. I was thinking if he has anything to dress up with. I find there's a difference between dressing nice and dressing up, and with dressing up most people don't really have to dress up that often so most people don't have dress up clothes."
She could tell it was dress up rather than dress nice because her mommy wore her robes to dinner. Personally, Miyuki thought her mommy had a lot of nice clothes, in fact a clean version of her mommy's version of a cheongsam was very nice dinner wear because of all the decoration Uncle Helen put on it, but her mommy's robes meant it was very important.
Or she was going out with ada, whichever it was.

"Maybe we should tell him to dress up for River," Amalirahc teased her.
River rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Forget I said anything."
Arthael laughed and patted her on the head. "You're growing up, River. You're going to be teased about boys, especially when you keep bringing up a particular one."
"He's a new friend!" River protested.

"I don't get it," Miyuki looked up at her ada in confusion, "Why is River being teased?"
Of course Miyuki wouldn't get it quite yet, which wasn't a surprise really.

"Because she is at the age where she can begin to look for someone with whom she might spend her life," Earendil explained with an amused smile. "She's showing interest in a boy, which is going to lead some people to tease her that she might be interested in him in that way."
"Sounds like dreadful fun," Halmir grinned mischievously.

Lin looked over at Halmir and laughed at that. It seemed everyone had a sense of humour in the romance department. She knew why though, it was kind of fun and funny at times.
"Were you ever teased?" Miyuki asked her ada innocently.
If girls were teased then so must boys and she learned by now that her ada had probably been one at one point.

Earendil looked over at Lin, then back at Miyuki. He had been teased mercilessly, though Lin hadn't realized it at the time. At least, to his knowledge.
"Yes, I was teased," he replied finally. "By Ulrich and your grandfather."
He smiled. "But once you're married, the teasing ends. Usually."

Miyuki gave him a look that told him that she wasn't quite convinced if he said 'usually'. It suggested there was more to it than that.

Earendil chuckled. "The first time you see people after you're married, especially if it's a while after you've been married, they might still tease a bit. But not the same way. And at that point, you really don't mind, mostly."
"Because that's when we get to rub it in just how long it takes for people to open their eyes," Halmir said innocently, taking advantage of the opening Earendil had given him.

"Halmir!" Lin exclaimed blushing, "That's low!"
After all, she knew now that Earendil had known long before she had, so really it wasn't a fair opening since she was the one who took a while.
Miyuki blinked looking at her mommy and then at Halmir, "Did you tease too?"

Halmir's eyes opened wide as he looked at Miyuki innocently. "Me?" he said as if it were the most ridiculous suggestion in the world. Then he laughed. "Of course!"
"Everyone teases at one point or another, and everyone gets teased at one point or another," Arthael pointed out. "Halmir and myself have been the brunt of many jokes ourselves."
When they had first announced their intention to marry, no one had believed them, and it had taken a while for the teasing to stop.

Miyuki stared at the two, they were always together and Arthael was always serious she couldn't imagine the two being teased.
"Why?" she asked.
"Probably because no one could believe it at first," her mommy murmured thoughtfully, "Just like there will be people around a couple who see it a mile away, there are other couples no one would have realized until told so."

Halmir grinned, but for once he didn't say anything. For her part, Arthael was content just to let Miyuki wonder.
"The point is," Earendil concluded, "everyone ends up in something of a similar situation, and everyone has fun with it."

Just like Arthael had predicted they had arrived back at the palace by the afternoon, and like Lin had guessed, Miyuki at least was hungry. They had spent nearly the whole day out and had only breakfast.
"We're back!" Miyuki grinned as she looked up at the large looming building.

"Come on, let's go find King Eregon and Queen Amalthea and see if we can invite Jess and his family to dinner sometime!" River squealed, taking off at a run as they approached the palace.
"Hey!" Amalirahc protested, running after her, arm outstretched to try to grab her. "Can't we eat first?"
The grownups laughed at the children, though at the same time Earendil couldn't help but wonder exactly where River got that energy from.

Lin giggled, more at River than at the other children because River reminded her of River's grandmother. Of course that was a small part of her childhood but she still remembered bits and pieces.
"I'm hungry too," Miyuki spoke up, it was rare she agreed with Amalirahc because Amalirahc was always hungry but in this case she was hungry too.
