It was special because it was a lunar eclipse that occurred during the Winter Solstice, which hasn't happened in ages. Also, because it was a total eclipse. Both together haven't happened in centuries.
And... I didn't see it either because of clouds.

Clouds got jealous of all the attention and crashed the party.
Joke's on them though; next time I go cloud gazing, I'm gonna say,
"Hey, that one looks like a lunar eclipse"
