"Okay. Classes are fun. For me, this is even more fun," Lori said, shuffling through a file folder. "Unfortunately I'm going to have to test you on all of this periodically, but it's not as strict as you'd think. Is there an order you want to attack this in? Alphanumerical or genus or...?"
Clearly this was an excited man.

Lori definitely excited, and it was contagious. She smiled at him and thought. Hm. "By genus?" She suggested. "I'm excited to be continuing classes with you, Lori. I don't mind tests. Dari said he'd help me memorize." She could do this!

"Good, good! Yeah, I don't think you'll have a problem, you're a good student." He flipped to a particular point and continued talking as he slid it in front of Maia. "As of the moment they've only got you down for Seelie, but we can fit Unseelie in if we've got any time. I'd like to, I honestly think they're underestimating you a bit, but anyway, that's neither here nor there. You only have to memorize the ones with known members, the rest are just for fun, and potentially could help if you come upon an unknown. Like yourself. Let's start Seelie, then. Alphabetically..." He slid an iPad over to Maia and checked his notes. The first entity was displayed on the page, with a drawing rather than a photograph.
"Alright, so this is a random-knowledge one..." And so it began.

Just down for seelie? Huh. She'd mentioned an interest in being ambassador for fae, she hadn't expected to be specialised. Underestimating her? She gave a slight shrug. "I don't mind either way," she said, honestly. "I'd like to learn about unseelie as well." It'd be good to know what to do If they met up with an unseelie unexpectedly.
She took the iPad and studied the drawing. "It'd be interesting to find something unknown," she said. Or a hybrid, like her.

"Right, there's that too. Things with no classification that we run across, that's always fun. Sometimes dangerous, but mostly fun. You'll never be out in the field without at least one of us though."

Maia went through the file, reading over it. "Andrew told me I'm working with Toby," She said. "I'm looking forward to working in the field," she added. "Are the tests difficult?"

"Which tests?" Lori asked, willing to put aside starting her studies for the moment for any questions Maia may have about the process, "Mine or the virtual ones?"

"Both?" Maia looked up from the iPad. "I don't think I'll have trouble with yours." She was a good student, and she'd made leaps and bounds the last several months. "Is there a trick to memorizing?"

"Sure. The first letter is the beginning of the genus name, and then a number regarding subset one, and then another for subset two. For example. Toby's a W13. Were, wolf which is 1, type 3, which is the big standing beast rather than the four-legged sort, with an ability to choose the four-legged sort. The higher the number the higher the rarity usually," Lori said with a smile and a nod. "As for the virtual tests, nobody does any good at first, so don't worry about that. It's all about practice."

Maia nodded, noting the number and letter. "Do you have a number for me yet?" she asked. She'd been more worried about the virtual tests. "Good," She said. "I won't be alone, then."

"Of course. We had you down as FSE1-and-something-thousand but now you're a FHSEH1-1. It all sounds very dehumanizing, though. Well, not human, but you know what I mean," Lori said, "I much prefer real names, but this all helps with paperwork and field work." He nodded then and waved a dismissive hand. "Not at all. You'd have to be pretty terrible to fail out. I can introduce you to some of the techs beforehand if you'd like do you can be more comfortable when they set you up."

"I prefer real names too," Maia agreed. But she'd have to memorize genus codes, so it was probably best to start learning them now. "I'd like that," she smiled at him. Meeting people always made working with them easier. She looked back at the iPad. "I've never seen this before," she said.

"Neither has anyone at the bureau," Lori said, "hence the drawing. Those pictures we took of you are in there, under your code. You're immortalized in our files." He smiled. "Okay. So. That's a Bean Tigh. FBT. They're like a female Santa Claus, supposedly. Entirely seelie. We've never met one, but that doesn't mean they-- or she, doesn't exist."

"A Bean Tigh," Maia echoed. She'd never even heard of her. "So there may only be one?" She looked at the picture again. "They could be anywhere." Fascinating.

"In lore, she's a singular chubby, pleasant old woman who likes to give gifts. She could literally be anywhere. In that case she doesn't need our help, though, so all the more power to her. Each entity has a list of traits, but some relate to other species by code, so that can be a little difficult in the beginning. There'll also be some codes you don't need to learn like half of the Spirits subset and the Deads and things."
