Ian's face lit up. She remembered his birthday! He had been afraid she had forgotten that she was going to spend it with him. "Emerwyn-" his voice was soft and thick with joy. Moving toward her he took the salad from her hands setting it on a nearby table before enfolding her in a giant hug.

"I'm so sorry about what happened." The words just poured out of him. "It was never my intention to run, but somehow I felt trapped by my own emotions." The deer could feel a tears form in his eyes. "I can never let you go, and I don't want to. Oh gods, I love you so much."

A tear slid down his cheek but he didn't care, he had just said everything he wanted to say, he hoped that she could understand. He loved her, he wouldn't be able to handle it of he lost her.

Emerwyn closed her eyes and wrapped her arms ack around Ian. Her face was buried in his shoulder; she was so happy.
She was ready to forgive him of anything, no matter what. Anything was a worthy exchange to feel the way she felt at that moment.

"You know I could never be angry with you," she whispered back.

His ears twitched happily and he held her a moment longer before letting go. Green eyes were shining brightly not just because of the tears and a gentle smile played at his lips.

"Shall we enjoy our salad m'dear?" He felt like he was on top of thet world. Nothing would get between him and Emerwyn again, he silently vowed.

"I believe that is a wonderful suggestion."
She sat down at the table, organizing her skirt, then removing her cloak, and placing it on the seat beside her.
She looked encouragingly at Ian to begin the meal. She wanted to see how he enjoyed this special arrangement of those foods he ate every day. His side had a lot of tomatoes.

He sat down and saw Emerwyn's encouraging look. He saw the load of tomatoes on his side and knew that Emerwyn had spent awhile preparing this salad just for them.

A furry arm reached towards a tomato on the plate and the deer snagged it. He chewed it carefully enjoying every flavor, and basking in the knowledge that it had been made by Emerwyn. When he swallowed, he nodded encouragement to Emerwyn. "Eat," he prodded.

Emerwyn watched him with bated breath, a kind of fanciful anticipation.
When he seemed to be enjoying it, she sighed, and was satisfied.

Olbliging, Emerwyn picked into the black olives, her favorite, daintily picking them between a thumb on hoof. She savored the salty flavor, then moved on to the numerous leafy undercoats of the salad, some of which were from the jungle itself. Then, the onions, the smaller cherry tomatoes, the multi-colored peppers.

Food had taken on a new meaning now. It was more than just a neccessity for life.
It was a beautiful half-hour of culinary silence, seasoned with love.

Ian had devoured his half of the salad. While Emerwyn ate daintily, Ian was a bit faster, and messier. After, he licked his fingers clean before grinning at her.

This was such a nice evening, and the salad was delectable. He said so.

And then it hit him the reason he had come to the cafeteria . "Do you have room left for cake?" He didn't even know if they were transformed to the point where they couldn't eat cake, but it didn't matter, it was his birthday, and he wanted cake.

Emerwyn finished within fair time, still chewing though, as Ian spoke.
She was gradually getting used to the idea of chewing cuds. It was disgusting at first, but she came to feel it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Cake?" An odd suggestion... but then again, it was his birthday. "Sounds lovely. But... I don't know quite how I feel about frosting any more."

Nodding, Ian stood and strolled to the food selection eyeing the desserts carefully. Finally, he found what he was searching for, a cinnamin cake. No frosting, as cinnamin cakes were always better without the sugary substance.

Bearing two slices he steered back towards the table and set a piece in front of the other deer with flourish. "Cinnamin cake." he told her smiling again - he seemed to be doing that a lot lately - before sitting down with his own slice.

Emerwyn smelled the cinnamon, and was pleased. The spice smelled so perfect. And no frosting.

"Perfect," she said, inhaling the scent. It wasn't the only scent she was taking in.
"But wait," She held up a cloven hand before letting him eat.
She looked down, and then up again, and giggled bervously to herself before singing softly:
"Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, sweet Ian...
Happy birthday to you."

The stags face turned bright red as she sang, and after she finished he looked her directly in the eye, before taking a deep breath, Avery's words echoing in his head.

"I. . .I would like you to stay with me." If it was possible his cheeks turned even redder and his ears started to twitch. "At my duplex." He hoped she understood that he meant from then on, not just for a night. He wanted to stay close to her - forever.

The statement was far too heavy and took way too much effort for Ian to get out, to simlpy mean a night together.
Though, that seemed heavy enough for him a couple of days ago.
Emerwyn felt a powerful rush as he said it, and discovered that she was longing for him to ask her that.

She reached across the table and took his hands in hers.
"Yes," she whispered. Forever.

Her single word meant more to Ian then he could ever hope to tell her. So he said nothing and his cake lay almost forgotten until he looked away from Emerwyn's eyes and saw it on the table.

Blushing again Ian cleared his throat and let go of Emerwyn. "Um, cake then?" he said casually trying to reduce the crackling that seemed to be in the air.

"The second best idea you've had all night."
She withdrew her own hands slowly.
Emerwyn could hardly eat, her heart was so light. It seemed such a simple thing. After all, they lived only a few duplexes away from each other.
But, there was so to it. It was a kind of commitment to each other.

She and Jerrick did not live far from each other in the city, but their relationship changed entirely when they decided to get an apartment together. It did become more difficult in some ways, but they became so much closer.

The cake tasted so much sweeter. Emerwyn could hardly take her eyes off of him.
She was feeling the way she never thought she'd feel for the rest of her life.

It seemed to Ian as if the moments were taking millenia to pass as he ate his cake.

When he had invited her to live with him, there was a finality to it. He couldn't turn back now, the shy deer needed courage more than he ever had before.

He needed the courage to be able to stop being so shy and actually live. But since having asked ehr, he felt a confidence within him forming. Everything would be alright, he would find the courage he needed.

And as his thoughts trailed away he had realized that he was eating air, that he had finished his cake but was still taking bites of nothing.

What a fool he was.
