"Sure. Mahado is still with the pharaoh, and he's one stubborn b*****d. Don't expect Mahado to leave if he still thinks Atem is in danger of any kind." Seto said, turning away from the door, looking back at Ayira.

Atem looked up; a relieved grin broke across his face when he saw it was Nanu. "Did you hear? I got brainwashed!" He said cheerfully, as though he hadn't had the potential to kill Seto and Ayira and anybody else.

Seto sighed as Nanu left, and took her seat. He looked at Ayira, deciding that now that he was alone with her, he didn't need to remain on guard. He bowed his head, struggled for a moment, and then began to cry. Not loudly, not big bawling tears, but just tears. Why did things have to be screwed up? If Akhenaden hadn't walked in, if Bakura hadn't come by... Things wouldn't be like this. He shouldn't have left her, not alone, at least. If she was to die, it would be in the gods' will. They clearly didn't mean for him and Ayira to be together. Who was he, a mere priest, to argue with them? Still... his heart ached painfully at the thought of losing her.

"I know I was the one that noticed..." Nanu said sitting beside him.

"It was you?" Atem asked, then looked over at Mahado, arching an eyebrow. Mahado laughed nervously.

"Well, ah, actually, I believe her precise words were 'possessed by demons'." Mahado said in his defense.

"I'm thinking of just not doing this whole festival thing. Send Amenitre in my place or something." Atem said wearily, getting more serious. Well, he clearly wasn't being serious, but still. He didn't want to go through with the festival.

Nanu sighed "I would understand..." nanu said "Why dont you take a nap with me?"

"That doesn't sound like a bad idea." Atem said, through a yawn. "Mahado, you may go now. See if you can't find Seto and inform him of my decision." Mahado bowed and left quickly, glancing over his shoulder briefly at the two..

Bakura was sleeping. It had taken a bit of convincing on Mariku’s part, but Bakura had finally agreed that, just maybe, he should take a nap, after his eventful afternoon at the palace. He had dropped off to sleep rather quickly, despite the noises outside of the people preparing for the festival. Mariku offered to stay awake and watch Bakura, if Rei wanted to go to sleep.

“I mean, if you’re tired.” The blonde said quickly, looking at Rei. “If you’re not, then I think it would be a good idea if you came up with some ideas for what you’re going to do next. Underground living obviously doesn’t work with him.” Mariku gestured towards the sleeping thief king, who was muttering something in his sleep. He seemed to be dreaming; usually a bad thing, in his case, but this time he didn’t seem too upset. “Because of his wonderful idea to attack the priest, they’re going to be on guard more than usual. The very least we need to do is get out of such close range of the palace.”

---

Bakura hadn’t been aware of going to sleep; just a brief conversation with Mariku before hand. He was in the desert, but he couldn’t feel the sun or the wind. The sand stretched on for miles and miles all around him, and he couldn’t see anything. No town looming in the distance, no random bits of shrub, nothing. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, but since it wasn’t hot, he didn’t care. He stood and looked around, trying to figure out what was going on. “What the hell kind of lucid dream is this if I’m only standing here?” He wondered aloud, feeling bitter.

“You can sit if you’d rather…” came a small, soft voice from behind Bakura. The thief whipped around, caught off guard, and gawked at what he saw. It was a boy, no more than six years old, just standing there. He recognized the child as soon as their identical eyes met; it was himself. The child Bakura squinted slightly, having to peer up at his adult self. “On the ground, I mean. There aren’t any chairs.” He sat down, folding his scrawny legs underneath him. The thief king could only watch in fascination.

Slowly, Bakura lowered himself to the child’s level, taking the some posture. This was so weird, but at least he knew he was dreaming. “Yeah, I see that.” He muttered, casting a dark glance around the barren desert. The child offered a small, sad smile. Was he really this depressing? The adult cleared his throat, feeling awkward. “So… you’re some little dream bit? Some creepy mini-me or something?”

The child shook his head, his pale eyes falling to his lap. “No. At least, I don’t think so. I came for Rei, I don’t know why I—I meant to see her. I’m just me—not you. Not yet, and I never will be.” Bakura scowled—this little brat was making no sense. The child sighed, realizing he would have to explain better. “I don’t know, either. But… I’m apparently not from your world. I’m from my own place.”

“Ohhh—you mean like those places Rei pops up in. A different dimension, or whatever.” Bakura hadn’t really paid much attention to the details of things; he knew that there were different worlds with him, the pharaoh, all the priests, all of that. That was why he was constantly unable to remember Rei. “What about it? What does this have to do with Rei?”

The child looked a bit nervous, and picked at the bottom of his shirt. “Well… She had been with me. She showed up just a little bit before everyone… left me. She helped me, but then she left me too.” He looked up at the older version of himself, tears in his eyes. “I didn’t know why she left, or where she had gone. But I wanted to see her again. She didn’t say goodbye, and I miss her.”

"Yes...were going to have to get out of here..." Rei said. Yawning she laid down beside bakura and soon fell asleep.

Bakura pitied this part of him; he almost wanted to comfort the child, but thought better of it. Nobody had comforted him when he was in this same state, so why should he do the same? It wouldn’t matter, anyway. “So what? Nobody says goodbye. Just live with it. She’s gone; you’re on your own. Deal. Just because you flit around in my dream doesn’t mean you get what you want.”

There was a silence as the boy struggled with this and the urge not to cry. “But…” He said softly, his voice cracking a little. “All… all I wanted was to say goodbye…” He lowered his head, his hair falling in his face. His adult counterpart sighed, and then shifted so that he was sitting next to him.

Bakura slipped an arm around the small shoulders, hugging his younger self. “Don’t worry. I’ll tell her for you, okay? I don’t even know how the hell you’re talking to me, but you probably can’t do this again, especially not with her. But I’ll tell her what you said, all right?” The younger him nodded, and Bakura swallowed hard as he watched the boy struggle not to cry. “Nobody is here but you. If you want to…” Bakura offered, and didn’t need to say much more than that. The child clung to him, his little hands fisting in his jacket, and bawled. Bakura scooped him up, holding him close, feeling relieved, as though he were the one crying. He stroked the boy’s hair, rocking him a little, trying to comfort him.

Bakura didn’t know how long he sat there with the boy, but eventually the crying stopped. The child looked up at him, his eyes red-rimmed, and then vanished. Bakura assumed that he had woken up in his own world, and smiled sadly. He sat still for a while, feeling the warmth fade from where the kid had been moments earlier, and then felt like breaking down himself. He wanted to wake up, he wanted to tell Rei his younger self’s message before he forgot. He hoped that he would still remember by the time he woke up. He could feel someone touch his cheek, and heard a voice, as though it was coming from the skies.

---

“Look. He’s crying in his sleep.” Mariku muttered to himself, leaning forward and wiping away the tears that had fallen silently. Bakura twitched and then opened his eyes slowly. He stared blankly in front of him, and Mariku wondered if he wasn't quite awake yet. Then the thief's gaze turned towards the blonde.

"Remember to tell her he said goodbye..." Bakura muttered, trying to focus on Mariku. He could tell Mariku was confused, and probably thought he was going crazy. Bakura pushed himself up, then looked down at Rei. Not to wake her up, he silently moved over to Mariku, feeling shaky. "In case I don't remember. The kid me told her he misses her and wanted to say goodbye." Bakura mumbled, his vision swimming. He didn't know how long he had slept, but he didn't feel rested at all. Bakura passed out, feeling miserable, and clung to Mariku, who was utterly confused.

"Love you..." Atem mumbled just before dropping off to sleep. He was glad that he was able to even to that; he had been sleeping so erratically that he never knew when he would actually go to sleep, though he felt tired almost all the time.

Once rei had moved away from her rei woke up. She let out asmall groan moving closer to bakura.

Nanu smiled "Love you too" nanu said before falling asleep in his arms

There was a faint knock at the door, and it opened before Seto could tell the person to go away. He wiped his eyes quickly, glaring through his red-rimmed eyes at the intruder. It was Mahado. He relaxed, just slightly. "What is it?"

Mahado honestly had to work not to smirk as he gave Seto the news. "The pharaoh is sending you away. You're to guard over his daughter while she goes to visit her mother for the season." He said bluntly, keeping his face emotionless and his voice even. Seto's eyes widened a little.

"He-- what? Why?!" Seto wasn't angry yet; the news was hard for him to wrap his mind around. Leave--to watch over Amenitre? That was a stinging insult to Seto. Any guard could do that. That wasn't the kind of thing a priest like himself was expected to do.

Mahado's lips twitched a little; it was hard for him, who didn't exactly like Seto, not to enjoy this. "He says that without your Millennium Rod, you're pretty much not qualified to be a priest. He has no use for you at court. Besides, he also doesn't want any problems between you and Akhenaden. He says that this is the best decision. Unless you can find the Millennium Rod before the end of the festival, prepare to be the royal babysitter."
