"Ah," Ulani smiled. "We have only one song here in the valley that's common ... I would show you, but I can't sing." She laughed and started putting the dishes away, trying not to make too much noise with them.

Kara was surprised, she didn't know Ulani couldn't, she thought the lady could, "Everyone can sing," she told Ulani with a smile, "It's just how comfortable we are at doing so."

Ulani laughed again. "No, trust me ... I can't. I was born with a magic that at one time all Southland elves were born with ... what I sing is manifested not as sound, but illusion or - in some cases - reality."
She closed the cupboard door and joined Kara at the table. "I've never hummed or sung a single note in my life ... much as I would have loved to." She shrugged. "But Ulrich has a wonderful voice ... so it makes up for it, when I can convince him to sing something."

Kara giggled at hte thought of Ulani convincing Ulrich to sing, "That must be lovely."
Though she couldn't imagine not being able to sing herself.

"It is," Ulani nodded, smiling warmly. "Leilani - his sister, my sister-in-law - wrote a song when we were ... young ... and despite the years, and the distance that is now between us ... whenever I can convince Ulrich to sing it again, it feels as though she's here with us ..."
She rested her elbows on the table. "She was my best friend when we were growing up ... it's been decades since we've seen her ... but as much as I miss her, and I know Ulrich does, we'll never see her again."
Her eyes grew unfocused and she stared out the window - or rather ... into space.

"Ulani?" Kara asked softly and a bit worriedly.
Did she mean death? It coudln't be that though, she thought, unless they didn't have an afterlife of any sort, but for some reason Kara found that hard to believe.

Ulani gave her head a little shake, and her eyes focused on Kara once more.
"I'll be fine, don't worry about me," she murmured. "I was just ... thinking. Wondering. If it was worth coming back here ... without my parents, Ulrich's parents, Lei or her husband ... their children ..."
She smiled. "But that's not something to be discussed, especially on a beautiful day like today." She glanced at Kara's progress. "Do you need any help with the clothes?" she asked, brightening once again.

She blinked at the change of subject, but it worked well, since her focus was back on her work, "Well, it'll take a while to sew it all up," she murmured thoughtfully as she continued to cut, "So probably with that."

Ulani nodded and smiled, looking at the cloth. "An interesting style," she remarked, her experienced eyes seeing somewhat the idea of the clothes. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she looked at them. "I wonder ..." she murmured, reaching out with one finger.

"Wonder?" Kara trailed off looking at the pattern, she tried for the best pattern she could remember off the top of her head.
She wondered what Ulani saw in the pattern.

"I haven't embroidered anything in ... forever," Ulani murmured thoughtfully, her eyes flickering back and forth between Skye and Miyu. "Would you mind if I embroidered something on the dresses? It would be in elvish, I'm afraid ..."
She paused. "If you'd like I can show you what I'm thinking of," she added.

"That would be perfectly fine," Kara smiled brightly, "It's fine that it would be elvish, I've never seen embroidery that was elvish," she replied happily, "I'm use to a wide range of clothes.

Ulani was still working of the details of the embroideries she wanted to do ... something that would suit each of the young angels.
Perhaps some wings on the shoulderblades ... and on the front?
Their names ... in the shoulders, maybe. Yes ... that would be nice. She suggested her ideas to Kara.

If she recalled what she had seen in the writings it would look quite lovely she thought.

Skye was slowly losing interest in just watching Kara work, and she reached out and grabbed one of the sewing needles that was sitting on the table. It was as long as her finger, and she held it between her first two fingers and looked at it closely.
