Rabid shrugged.

"Eh. It's the kinda baggage that comes with dating your best friend's brother." She wrapped an arm around him and sighed. Poor Julian.

Liam made a very strange 'ktchh' sort of noise and clicked his tongue, then intermingling these nosies with his nonsensical murmuring. What in God's name...?

He then stored a finger bone in his uniform pocket.

Julian managed a grin, and said nothing more.

Crow stumbled down the stairs, shuddering at the awful burn trickling down her throat. She landed hard on the mildewed ruins of a parquet floor, breath rasping. Her flesh crawled, and she made an awful croaking sort of hiss as the marque sizzled on her skin. Her usual pallor was giving way to ugly leathery brown, her fingers bony and tapering to bone-claws. She spit again, shivering.

"No," she breathed. "Down. Down. Downdowndowndown-"

She calmed little by little and coughed, spitting up the scant contents of her stomach. Wiping a hand across her mouth, Crow sat up, looking at the burn that raised a vivid welt over her fingers. It healed very slowly, and suddenly was gone. <********," she muttered, getting up and shaking herself like a dog.

Liam eyes widened and he swallowed hard. Nothing like a girlfriend turning into some kind of weird thingamajig and back to pull you froma psychotic episode.

"Y'okay?"

Startled, Crow's hands flew up to cover her face.

"Fine," she said hurriedly, pulling her hood over her head and trying to run past Liam. She slipped on a patch of mold and fell against him instead, bringing them both down.

"...ow."

Liam groaned and writhed a bit.

"You should know by now I don't give a damn what you look like." End of discussion.

"I do," Crow said with unexpected heat, sitting up and adjusting a finger she'd managed to twist horribly back into place with an ugly snap. Her face, as normal as normal got for her, shifted into guilty embarrassment. She hadn't meant to sound like a b***h. A shallow b***h. She stood, wincing, and then hoisted Liam up. She nearly tripped over a body laying prone behind her and gave a yelp as she spotted the iron arrow sticking from its chest, flinging herself onto Liam in skittish fear. Something so small, to cause such a reaction...

"Enough exploring," Jeddeth called. "We're going. Nightfall's soon and I don't want to make camp surrounded by dead."

"I'd like that," Liam said simply as he headed back to Jeddeth, still hold Crow and carefully leading her around the dreaded arrows. He had no idea why they frightened her but, hey, whatever.

"You're creepy," Rabid whispered as she prodded Liam in the leg, then standing and brushing herself off.

"Necromancer."

"Freak of nature."

Leaving the ruins behind, the group trudged forward into the mist. Crow looked over her shoulder every now and them, cradling her hand to her chest.

Hours later, when the dark became so absolute even Jeddeth couldn't go on further, they halted.

"Find the softest rocks you can to sleep on," it said wryly, pulling its ragged hood over its head as it sat on a boulder, serving as watch.

"Slept two days ago," Liam said matter-of-factly and perched beside Gaping Maw of Horror, watching Rabid try to curl up against a stone.

"How efficient," the creature remarked dryly, looking over its shoulder. Julian had settled next to Rabid, and Crow had curled up somewhat separate from everyone else. The siblings were already deep in exhausted sleep, and Crow didn't notice as Jeddeth threw its ragged cloak over her again. Naked and revealing every scar, every jagged angle of its withered body, the creature crept back to its rock. It was a walking skeleton, genderless and unimpressive. It picked at its teeth, flicking a boneshard out into the darkness.

"So," it said, head swerving in serpentine motion towards Liam. "Nice sword."

Liam had forgotten that he hadn't stowed the sword away. he tossed it into intangibility and shrugged.

"Not mine."

He gave Gaping Maw of Horror a once-over and tilted his head at the scars on its back.

"Those from the Fuzzwad?"

"Tch. It makes you look valiant," the creature said with a shrug. "Ask Mistress to gird it on you. She'd probably like that."

At the question, it touched a scar spanning over its shoulder up its neck, and shrugged again.

"A few of them, yes," it said. It yawned, jaw stretching impossibly and its black tongue curling. "After five years, you'd think they'd have faded. He almost severed my spine. Clever one."

Liam snorted lightly.

"I'm sure he'd feel pretty bad about it now," he nodded as he leaned back, "He didn' wanna hurt you. He jus' loves his mum is all. 'S a lot bigger now, though. He wouldn't 'almost' anything a second time around." He blinked and sighed.

"This is going to sound very, very strange...but can I look at your head?"

"The bird-girl seemed eager to finish the job," Jeddeth said wryly, remembering jagged metallic feathers. Pulling at a loose tooth and twisting it out, it poked at the new canine growing beneath it. The question struck it as slightly odd, but it had heard infinitely stranger. It bowed its head down towards Liam, neck stretched out.

"They're kinda in cahoots. Partner in crime, if you must," Liam shrugged and then took Ga--nonono. Jeddeth's head in his hands. He felt joints and tilted it, examining curves and muscle and flesh without fear.

"Remarkable."
