Well, I try to only tap my toes in my sheo. However, on some songs, you just have to tap you feet, and since I'm a flute and if all of us tap our feet, our BD just teases us by saying he will be watching legs "flying" up and down during the concert.

River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? Tapping your foot is fine. My college band director tells us to keep time as best we can. You may want to find a little better way of hiding your timekeeping though. Maybe tapping a toe instead. Just don't do what I did and Keep count loudly. I thought I was whispering and the band director told me to keep it down. Also another tip, don't whistle the tune of the song being played, got called out on it once.

I tap with my heels.... I was taught to tap my feet, but like, they start to get tired after a while, so I just do it with my heels. Hehe. Yup... I had to do solos if I didn't tap my feet, so I usually tap my feet. Like when it's a fast tempo, and I know the song well enough, I don't, but usually I do. [:

I try to tap my foot...but I can't. For slow parts or parts with whole/half notes, I can tap my foot...but once I start playing quarter, eighth, or sixteenth notes I can't. It throws me off somehow. My BD and the assistant BD don't know why. I play better without tapping my foot anyways.
NOTE: This happens even if I tap my heel or something. Any "tempo-keeping" method other than a metronome messes me up when playing a song.

tapping your foot is the best way to keep tempo without throwing yourself off or being too obvious and looking stupid
@Miss Blah: you dont tap your foot with the notes but with the tempo that is set try using a metronome and tap your foot with the metronome and play something that'll help you

Mr. Lynch isn't like that, just Sam. I tap my foot, and I have thick soled shoes (skate shoes) and laminated floors. Curse them!!! I have to tap my toes. Otherwise it screws me up...

Tapping our heels at least is necessary. For concert band, it's not really as important but yeah move your body to keep time. It's more reliable than your mind. Our band director always says your mind is not reliable at all for keeping time.

If you are on stage (a stage with a hollow floor, or just noisy) tap with your toes inside your shoe to not make sound. Or if your BD just hates taping feet just do it the same way as said above.

confused Our band is actually encouraged to tap their feet to keep time. Sometimes I tap my foot sometimes I don't. It just depends on the song and what my part is.
When we're counting really long rests my section will also hold up fingers and move their lips to make sure everyone comes in at the right time. sweatdrop

Maybe just tap your toe in your shoe, or your finger, like I do sometimes.

I sometimes tap my foot, not a huge tap but a minor small tap just to stay on tempo. I encourage it to be honest, it helps out when your on a fast tempo.

I always do it, its more out of habit now, then to keep in time as it second nature now. But its silly to tell u to stop unless he wanted u to miss a beat.

Our band directors vary. They all tolerate tapping but one of them prefers that you don't. He likes to wave his arms much better. mrgreen
