Felice07 LaLaPlushie I play oboe, it is my love. For marching band I play clarinet, I don't like it though. I can do percussion if I want so I'm thinking about doing that next year. My director is really flexible. Your reeds shouldn't get dirty eek You shouldn't run it in water either. I set mine in a shot glass filled with water for like 5 minutes though. It makes them last longer. Does anyone else make their own reeds? I'm learning how! Right now I'm just learning how to tye the string on, it's so complicated xp but I think it would be so cool to make my own reeds, so hopefully I'll really start this summer. Also, my last oboe teacher said that putting the reed in a film case or shot glass type thing to soak will ruin the tip! He told me just to dip the reed in, then set it aside to soak. confused Just a warning for you......... ARGH I HATE MAKING REEDS.... tying them on... and then they snap in half... and GRR.. I know how make oboe reeds fairly well.... my oboe teacher usually makes them for me.. and i'm learning how to make English Horn reeds this summer.

I probably won't get that far. mad I used to buy reeds from my oboe teacher, but he moved and I got a new one, and she doesn't have time to make enough to sell, so I have to order them from Massachussetts rolleyes Which is one reason I want to learn how to make them..... also they're so expensive. Yeh, making reeds is pretty frustrating so far, I mean, it has to be like, EXACTLY 74 inches or something like that.... and PERFECTLY lined up. Arg! and I haven't even learned how to shave the actual reed yet! xp

I play the oboe. ^^ It's a nice instrument, but only when you play it well.
There's another oboist in my band who is terrible. It's painful to listen too. -.-

Hi! I started playing oboe at Christmas, and I taught myself to play in like two months. I thought it was cool and when everyone said that it's hard to teach yourself and that it was amazing I was like 'what are you talking about???'
I've heard stories about oboes making it into jazz bands and some marching bands. If you really want to do that, try begging your band teacher. That's my plan. twisted

I play Bassoon in band (not my main...) My band teacher last year (middle school) asked me if I could play bassoon and this year in highschool (I didn't want to play it again this year) my darn friend decided to share with the band director ,after I asked him not to, that I could play basoon...
Its fun but I get bored fast cuz we have a crappy band and we play crappy music.

I play oboe and English horn and flute for pep band, well, now marching band since I'm off to college. My hs doesn't believe in marching. Woo!
Anyway, to respond to an earlier comment, I make my own reeds, but not all of them turn out right.
Eh reeds are temperamental.... and you have to scrape so. much.
