MorielTelperien "A percussionist is always a drummer." Not true. I play percussion, but I'm not *technically* a drummer. I play pit. For concert band I play alto sax. I don't know anything about snare technique, tenors technique, or bass technique, even. Also, I think you're backwards on rectangle vs. square. A square is a type of rectangle. I rectangle is not a type of square. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. A square is a rectangle with sides of equal length. Nope. Squares are rectangles. Not the other way around.

Pit really doesn't get enough credit. We work just as hard as the rest of the band does, but just because we don't march, everyone hates us. Sometimes it really sucks. gonk

We do work just as hard! Thank you! We don't get enough respect. It was really stupid: it rained one day at band camp and even though drumline was supposed to be the first to lunch (we won a fundraiser-contest) the pit were the last ones there, because the hornline had practiced inside. And I was talking to some hornline friends about it, and they said "Yeah, but all we did was practice music and it was so boring!" I sit there for a few moments with my mouth open and say "NO SYMPATHY!" It was kind of funny... But that's not the point. The point is we have a lot more to concentrate on than the hornline. Switching mallets, playing out, technique (takes a lot more than heavier breathing), playing cleanly, listening back (I'd say it's harder than watching the DMs). Adjective Pit really doesn't get enough credit. We work just as hard as the rest of the band does, but just because we don't march, everyone hates us. Sometimes it really sucks. gonk

It definately takes skill to listen and listen well when you are playing a loud instrument and those around you are playing loud as well. And on top of that, we have to watch to drum major. And if anything goes wrong with the timing, pit is usually blamed. Sorry. I started ranting a bit. wink

Adjective Pit really doesn't get enough credit. We work just as hard as the rest of the band does, but just because we don't march, everyone hates us. Sometimes it really sucks. gonk Right on, man! That's actually very true for me. My friend got pissed off at me once because he has to march and I don't. Anytime I defend that we have to move a ton of crap, it doesn't matter. Because GOD knows it isn't tiresome moving large chimes (that have awful steering...they've almost fallen over multiple times) or a cart of timpani outside. Oh no. And we all know that moving all those things up a truck ramp is like carrying bags of feathers...if not lighter. And, of course, playing chimes doesn't require any skills whatsoever. >.>;; What annoys me a bit more is when he complains about sectionals early in the morning (Only like..half hour sectionals..or less)..and how the pit (and probably the battery) doesn't have them. Note...we have to start band camp an entire week earlier than the rest of the band..4 hours a day then...20 extra hours...not including the other summer practices we had. Kenelley it's true it is hard do yall have an annoying pit member that thinks they are always right? Not sure...but we do have someone who complains all the time. =/

Already posted this, but just to refresh your memory.. I'm Erica, I play all forms of percussion. (except Xylophone and such. I suck at that.) In marching band, I play the snare drum, pep band, I play the drumset, and concert... depends on what I'm assigned.
Anyway, you guys are lucky you even have a pit. We only have nine percussionists, and everyone of them marches. (Which is good for us, we dislike pit people.) It's pretty funny though, because we only have about thirty-two band members, and we're the biggest section.

Kenelley it's true it is hard do yall have an annoying pit member that thinks they are always right? No. Although each of us have our annoying little quirks. Marimba: Jon (section leader) is actually insanely good, though he does have a tendency to drag a little bit. Xylophone: Colleen is very good at runs and fast tempos, though she drags alot as well First Vibes: Dan is also great at runs and has insane mallet height, but rushes like a mofo. Second Vibes: I probably have the best sense of rhythm, but I can't roll to save my life. Auxillary: Cody is a fabulous drummer and does great cymbal rolls, but has trouble with the scales.

I'm not trying to discount the rest of the band, but after a while, you just need to vent your frustrations. wink
