User ImageName: V'ime
Age: 20
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: ...eh
Weyr: Western
Rank: Wingrider - Fire Storm
Previous Rank/Craft: Candidate
Voice: [ X ] - Searching for a voice
Song: Searching for a song
Physical Description: Vimeran is a lean young man with a hard look in his brown eyes. He looks a bit older than his Turns suggest, a creased brow and a slight grimace an almost constant on his face. His brown hair is cut short out of first necessity, then habit, and there always seems to be a bit of a scruff on his face. Never a full beard, mind you, just enough to prickle should you get close enough to touch. His nose is a bit crooked from being broken when he was young. Though he has good posture he's not especially tall, topping out around 5'10 on a good day. His clothes are worn but well looked after, testament to his previous living situation where you had to make things last.

Personality: Vimeran has seen too much bad to not be cynical. All he knew growing up was the greed and self-importance of other people and it is hard for him to see past the veil that's been drawn over his eyes. He thinks everyone is capable of committing a crime and is of the firm belief that most people have at one point or another. He certainly has, so what makes that random lady over there any better? Vimeran has an equal dislike for just about everyone, with very few exceptions. Those exceptions, however, he is fiercely protective over. It takes a while to earn his trust and love, but once you do he's in your corner for life. Vimeran's small group of people he actually cares for is very dear to him and he would do anything to keep those people from harm of any kind, hence why he's become so focused and determined to succeed as a dragon rider now that Thread has returned. Its his way of keeping those he loves safe.

Vimeran has an incredibly strong sense of justice and he isn't afraid to let it show. He has no time for those in positions of power that abuse their station in life and he has a soft spot for those who grew up like he did, poor and trying to make things work. He knows there are those that live in the dregs of society that are just as bad as the ones at the top of the food chain that use their power for ill, but in his mind authority figures are the main perpetrators. He does not stand for injustice of any kind no matter where it comes from and he will always stand up for the underdog, the abused, and the persecuted even if he doesn't particularly care for them. Part of that is what made him want to be a guard in the first place, to protect those who couldn't protect themselves and to ensure the other guards didn't step out of line.

Vimeran has a rather fiery temper which turns on with little to no warning. There is no building rage, there are no warning signs. If someone says or does something that makes him mad, that person will know very quickly. Vimeran will often let his anger get the best of him initially, but his own obsession with accountability will grab him by the collar and give him a shake. Since he was little he was constantly aware of the fact that he could do good, or he could do bad. He did bad for so long in his young life it became a habit, but once he was aware that there were options he's striven to do the right thing. Vimeran's anger is hot and fierce but he usually gets it under control before he does anything irreversible, always holding himself to his internal promise of doing good.

When all is said and done, Vimeran will stick to his beliefs above all else. He has a strong sense of morals that he follows and he will not go against them if he can help it. He knows it will be hard at times, but he has to constantly prove to himself that he can do it. The one thing that slips past his firm resolve and morals are his addictive habits. When he was younger it was stealing. It gave him a rush of adrenaline and he was addicted to that sensation. Now Vimeran helps dull his cynical world views with alcohol, finding that while drunk his mind isn't quite as busy and he's not as wont to worry about doing the right or wrong thing. He's usually more concerned with finding his cot to crash on.
Positive: Protective, Just, Accountable, Unshakable.
Negative: Cynical, Irascible, Anti-Authority, Addictive.

History: Vimeran was born to a single, poor mother in Bitra and had to grow up quickly. He learned to be street smart from a young age and he grew up watching the different types of people that found their way to the corrupt Hold for one reason or another. Vimeran didn't like what he saw, people stealing and swindling others out of their money, their clothes, their lives, all with a grin and a pat on the back. Other things went on in Bitra that he saw that slowly shaped him as he grew, painting a very unfortunate picture of humanity to the young boy. Once he was old enough he began to run with a young gang of boys, learning tricks of the trade from the elder kids while trying not to have his meager belongings nicked off him by them. The only person in the world he trusted was his mother and each day only proved to him that humans were awful.

He was about twelve Turns when he began to realize he didn't have to steal. Everyone else was doing it, yeah, but he knew that wasn't right. People came here to have a good time - and lots of people did - yet so many people left here broken and lost. Some people never left, they just ended up circling the drain, the humanity and life slowly draining from them. Vimeran didn't like picking pockets and lying to drunks...what was stopping him from stopping?

Vimeran turned a very strange corner then. He stopped hanging out with the gang he'd been running with for so long, started trying to do good in his Hold, attempting to prove to himself that just because he could do bad things didn't mean he would. It was a challenge every day: he used to come home with Marks to give to his mother, but now he was lucky if he found something in the gutters. He knew he had to get some sort of job if he wanted income which was what turned him in the direction of the guard. To say that Bitra had a guard at all was laughable, but there were a few stationed there in the richer sections to keep little scamps like Vimeran had once been away from the wealthy tourists.

It was when he was searching for one of these guards to inquire about being trained to join their ranks that Vimeran was greeted by woman clad in riding leathers, a green dragon stationed not far from where she stood. A short conversation had Vimeran heading home to pack his few belongings and promise his mother he'd write from High Reaches where he was being taken to be a Candidate. To say his mother was proud was an understatement and as Vimeran boarded the dragon with her rider, he felt a little flicker of hope within him. Perhaps he was doing the right thing.

High Reaches, it turned out, was a blessing and a curse. There were so many rules to follow, so many things Vimeran didn't agree with, so many dragons and people and it was all quite overwhelming for the young man. He pushed back against his mentors and suffered for it, stuck in remedial lessons and doing extra chores and even sitting down with the Candidatemaster a time or two to talk things over and remind him that he didn't have to be here, and should he rock the boat too much they would send him back to Bitra. What kept him in the Candidate program was his own sheer willpower to prove that he could do this. He could become a dragon rider. Vimeran was constantly at war with himself, knowing he could do the bad thing, take the easy way out, quit before he even really started...but he didn't. That dragon had seen something in him, thought that he was worthy of having a dragon of his own, and Vimeran had to see if it was true.

Thread returned a year into his Candidacy and things got more intense. Vimeran thrived under the pressure even if he hated it, doing much better in his classes and training now that he had a goal. His mother was out there and needed protecting and, though he didn't feel a sense of duty to the whole planet, Pern did need saving too. If he could keep this up until a dragon picked him Vimeran might finally prove to himself that he wasn't his childhood, that he could be good enough for a dragon to pick him. And if not...well. The training here was tough. He could probably go back to Bitra and join up as a guard much easier. At least he had options.

Name: Rhodonth
Age: Weyrling
Color: Green
Size: 36'
Voice: X - Lottie from The Princess and the Frog
Song: No - Meghan Trainor
Physical Description: How kind of you to come! Rhodonth is simply ecstatic to be in your good company... or so she would have you believe. There is absolutely no mistaking the fact that very few meet this green's very high standards. She has been known to cast insult with a smile, and in the most charming manner imaginable. One might never guess that she's casting shade, but make no mistake about it, you're not worthy. Rather than be so gauche as to spell it out for the listener, however, Rhodonth will let them pick up on the many hints of her displeasure that she'll ever so graciously leave.

Her name means no, her number means no, no, no, no, no, no. Don't think that just because she's allowed you into her vicinity that you are in her confidences! She is very, very choosy with whom she allows close to her, although she gives every appearance of being friends with absolutely everyone, darling. In her opinion, a true lady would never allow anyone to know who she holds in enmity, so don't expect her to come right out and say it. Although she has a quick and clever tongue, it's used in the most carefully precise manner imaginable.

She is a very lofty creature, indulging herself in any number of intellectual pursuits, though she doesn't like anyone to know of it. Rhodonth would far rather that everyone underestimated her, so that she can remain one step ahead of her competition. And don't even think that you aren't competition, because everyone is. Whether she ever stops competing is a question for the ages, and if dragons were inclined to gambling, she would be right up there with the best of them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Origin of Name: From the Greek rhodon, meaning rose. Julep is derived from the Persian word meaning rosewater, though the form julep is old French.
Inspiration: The mint julep is a mixed alcoholic drink, or cocktail, consisting primarily of bourbon, sugar, water, crushed or shaved ice, and fresh mint. As a bourbon-based cocktail, it is associated with the American South and the cuisine of the Southern United States in general, and the Kentucky Derby in particular.
A mint julep is traditionally made with four ingredients: mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Traditionally, spearmint is the mint of choice used in Southern states, and in Kentucky in particular. Proper preparation of the cocktail is commonly debated, as methods may vary considerably from one bartender to another. The mint julep may be considered a member of a loosely associated family of drinks called "smashes" (the brandy smash is another example, as well as the mojito), in which fresh mint and other ingredients are muddled or crushed in preparation for flavoring the finished drink. The step further releases essential oils and juices into the mixture, intensifying the flavor from the added ingredient or ingredients.
Traditionally, mint juleps were often served in silver or pewter cups, and held only by the bottom and top edges of the cup. This allows frost to form on the outside of the cup. Traditional hand placement may have arisen as a way to reduce the heat transferred from the hand to the silver or pewter cup. Today, mint juleps are most commonly served in a tall old-fashioned glass, Collins glass, or highball glass with a straw.
The term "julep" is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine. The word itself is derived from the Spanish "julepe", from Spanish Arabic, and this from the Persian word گلاب (Golâb), meaning rosewater. English juleps, as opposed to later American mint julep, were primarily medicinal, lightly alcoholic, and often contained camphor.
The mint julep originated in the southern United States, probably during the eighteenth century. The earliest known mentions come from 1770 and include a satirical play by Robert Munford, The Candidate, (where a drunkard character “Mr. Julip” appears), and "A Short Poem on Hunting" (which describes julep as a concoction "Which doctors storm at, and which some adore" ) published in the Williamsburg Virginia Gazette. Further evidence of mint julep as a prescription drink can be found in 1784 Medical communications: "sickness at the stomach, with frequent retching, and, at times, a difficulty of swallowing. I then prescribed her an emetic, some opening powders, and a mint julep."
In 1793 Rev. Harry Toulmin described mint julep as “a tumbler of rum and water, well sweetened, with a slip of mint in it.”. An appearance of a mint julep in print came in a book by John Davis published in London in 1803, where it was described as "a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken by Virginians of a morning." Davis' interviewee mentions his love for whiskey came from his daily preparation of the drink.
Virginia taverns such as J. Pryor’s Haymarket Inn in Richmond began including ice-houses (possibly for the iced cocktails too) in their infrastructure in the 1780s, and the first mention of "Iced Julep" appears on May 4, 1807, in an advertisement for the Wig-Wam Gardens in Norfolk. Besides taverns, cocktails, including juleps, were routinely enjoyed by the rich, who would have them prepared by their slaves.
U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky introduced the drink to Washington, D.C., at the Round Robin Bar in the famous Willard Hotel during his residence in the city.
Americans enjoyed not only bourbon-based juleps during the nineteenth century, but also gin-based juleps made with genever, an aged gin.
By 1820, the julep was a legacy in Virginia and had been adopted as an item of local identity. The first acknowledged master of mint juleps was Jasper Crouch from Richmond, who identified himself as a Free Person of Color.
In the 1830s in New York was known a version known as "hailstone" julep or "hailstorm" julep, which included small "hailstones" or pounded small lumps of ice.
British captain Frederick Marryat's 1840 book Second Series of A Diary in America describes on page 41 the "real mint julep" thus:
There are many varieties of Mint Julep, such as those composed of Claret, Madeira, &c.; but the ingredients of the real mint-julep are as follows. I learnt how to make them, and succeeded pretty well. Put into a tumbler about a dozen sprigs of the tender shoots of mint, upon them put a spoonful of white sugar, and equal proportions of peach and common brandy, so as to fill it up one-third, or perhaps a little less. Then take rasped or pounded ice, and fill up the tumbler. Epicures rub the lips of the tumbler with a piece of fresh pine-apple, and the tumbler itself is very often incrusted outside with stalactites of ice. As the ice melts, you drink.
The 1862 edition of Bar-Tenders Guide: How to Mix Drinks or The Bon-Vivant's Companion by Jerry Thomas includes five recipes for the mint julep (as well as an illustration of how it is to be served) allowing for either Cognac, brandy, gin, whiskey or sparkling Moselle. Thomas states of the mint julep, "... a peculiarly American beverage ... It was later introduced into England by Captain Maryatt."
A holiday "Jingle Bell Julep" which uses macerated strawberry, cherries and raspberry instead of a mint base at the Round Robin Bar
In 1916, the traditional Virginia recipe as served at the "Old White" is described:
"... the famous old barroom, which was approached by a spiral staircase. Here in this dark, cool room, scented with great masses of fragrant mint that lay upon mountains of crushed ice, in the olden days were created the White Sulphur mint julep and the Virginia toddy, for which this place was famous the world over. The mint juleps were not the composite compounds of the present day. They were made of the purest French brandy, limestone water, old-fashioned cut loaf sugar, crushed ice, and young mint the foliage of which touched your ears ..."
Recently, however, bourbon-based juleps have decisively eclipsed gin-based juleps.
Positive Traits: Regal, Clever, Refined
Negative Traits: Old-fashioned, Puffed up, Competitive
Adult Size: 18'
Age: Weyrling
Physical Attributes: A delicate green with an absolutely charming visage. Although well proportioned she can be inclined toward roundness in the middle. Soft and sweet on the outside, but only there.
Additional Notes: Rhodonth is looking for the perfect life partner, and don't expect her to just settle for the first lady or gentleman that comes her way. She is inclined to be choosy, and rightfully so. Especially quick in the air, she has an average flame length.
Impression Effect: Alcoholism is a thing of the past. Rhodonth did not approve of it, and removed every trace of Vimeran's addition upon Impression. Let it be known, also, that Vimeran cuts quite a handsome and distinguished figure, as befits Rhodonth's rider.
Why Me? Vimeran might have little experience with luxury living, but Rhodonth is about to change that - what could be better than her presence, after all? While she is traditional in some ways, she does believe that she and Hers deserve to be at the pinnacle of Western society. Stubbornly refusing to be anything less than a queen-in-green, this little lady was drawn by Vimeran's honorable ways. He is a gentleman, and nothing less than a gentleman could have drawn her eyes permanently - although it is to be noted that she enjoys a handsome rake in her private hearts. For her bondmate nothing but the best would do, and she has determined that Vimeran possesses those qualities which she finds most important. He needn't fear overthrowing the Weyr, for their Weyr is now Western Weyr - and they can and should rise as high as possible together.
