 "Yea, one it glass, normally the wall the door is on. the rset are either concrete or some sort of hard thing because it's not drywall. If the ball hit drywall at those speeds it would break." and chuckled. "But we never go that fast so it's okay. And I'll go easy on you if you go easy on me." They entered the gym, Daril looking around before finding the rooms and the counter. "Two people." The girl at the front nodded, "Rackets and a ball?" "yes please." "Your card." he handed it over, her running it through before typing, handing it back. "One moment." she went to the back room, staying there only for a few moments before returning and placing the equipment on the counter. "And you can use Room 2, it should be empty." "Thank you. Here ya go, Sarad." and handed him his racket, walking down to their room. "You wanna toss first or me?"

 Sarad felt his chest tighten when he saw the racket and ball. it'll be ok. it'll be ok. he told himself over and over as he accepted the racket and followed Dale. his heart started to pound as soon as he saw the room. how many times had he been stripped and pushed into a room like this? how many times had he curled in the corner, his head in his arms, waiting for it to be over while his cousins and their friends took turns? he stopped at the door way, wanting to turn and run, but he didn't want Dale to know. Dale already knew too much, Sarad couldn't add one more thing. "what?" he asked, turning his gaze to Dale, "oh, you can. i don't know how." he steeled himself and stepped into the room, his shoe making it echo as he remembered. "slow, right?"

Dale looked Sarad over, noticing the boy looked scared, a bit pale, definitely not okay. But he stepped in to the room anyway, so Dale entered behind him and closed the door. "Yep. Slow. If it gets too fast I'll scream like a girl and cover my face with my arms." he said with a grin, getting on the other side of the line. "ready?" and he lifted the ball in to the air, gently hitting it towards Sarad.

Sarad continued to force a slow, steady breathing rythem as Dale gently hit the ball towards the wall. it's ok. it's ok. it's ok. Sarad lifted the racket and hurried to where the ball was slowly arching, just barely hitting it hard enough for it to reach the wall. "o-ok," he whispered to himself, "i can do this." they slowly sped up, Sarad growing better at hitting the ball as his fear lessened. he was playing with a friend, not surrounded by unknown faces. after about half an hour he had to call for a break, his body unable to keep up the faster pace they had set. "sorry-" he panted, leaning over once he was sure that Dale had caught the ball. "just need a minute."

Dale moved quickly to hit the ball back, making sure to be gentle, but as Sarad hit harder, so did he. He had to admit, the man was pretty fearless, hitting harder and harder. Dale was thakful he was in track or wouldn't be able to keep up with these hits. roughly thirty minutes in to it he gave a screech and ducked from the fast flying ball of death, looking where it had bounced to make sure it didn't hit him. It was break time. "That's cool." he said with a grin, not panting as hard as his friend, "But you were scared for no reason. This is fun, right?"

Sarad stiffened, looking up at Dale when he was called out on being scared. "that obvious, huh?" he asked, smiling weakly as he straightened. "my-cousins play. they come back with some pretty impressive bruises so i-i guess i was scared of being hurt." he lowered his eyes, not wanting Dale to see the lie within them. "but i grew a little more confident playing as time went by." he smiled a little and opened the door to sit on the bench outside. there was no way he'd be able to sit down and be vulnerable inside of that box. "you had a pretty impressive scream there at the end," he was trying to get the topic off of himself.

"Man you looked jaundiced you were so scared." he said, listening to the story as he bounced the tennis ball up and down on the racket. "But that makes sense though. I've seen people fracture ribs playing this game." he smiled back and following him out, laughing and lightly elbowing him. "Shut up! That thing was practically a missile." and snickered, "It's my mating call. Soon women will flock to me. And speaking of women I need to ask someone out to the dance." and he groaned.

Sarad nodded, "or two or three," he said in responce to fractured ribs. four of his had been cracked after one of the sessions, his Aunt had told him it was good for him to learn to manage pain and refused to let him receive any medical attention beyond her husband's check to make sure they weren't completely broken. "mating call, huh? should i move away to make room for them?" he asked as he mockingly looked around with his hand over his eyes. "how long do you think it will take? a decade? two?" he laughed as he brought his knees up to his chest, his back aching in complaint, but he ignored it. he was good at ignoring pain. "i already told you, you should ask that girl from track out."

Dale laughed, "That's just plain mean. More like five years. Gotta give em time." he said, sitting down beside his friend. "Tami?" he gave a sigh/groan sort of mix, "I should. She's like an inch taller than me, though. Makes her better at hurdles. I have to jump higher. Like a Mexican jumping bean." But he looked up at the flourescent lights. "Tell you what. I'll ask Tami if you ask a girl from your club. We have a meet before the dance so I can ask her then. And I can do pole vaulting too since all of this'll be healed up." and motioned towards the scabs on his arms.

Sarad shook his head slightly at the thought of asking a girl out himself, but he needed to. he couldn't have Dale questioning his orientation. "deal," he said softly, blushing. "i'll see if anyone is available tomorrow, you ask Tami sometime this week and we can do a group date." if they were in a group, it wouldn't be too bad, would it? he had no idea what he would talk about with a girl, in fact the person he'd spoken to the most in these past few years combined was Dale. "you know, i was the silent, reclusive type until we became roommates. what have you done to me?"

"Y'know what. If I see Tami today I'll ask her out. Even if she's with a horde of girls I'll ask her out anyway." and sighed, dreading having to ask Tami out. He didn't hate her, it was just, embarrassing, to gather up the courage to ask someone out. Looking back at Sarad he grinned, "You met me, for starters. And I talk a lot. I love talking. Small talk, deep talk, existential crisis talk, love it. the fact you responded was probably the second warning flag of you should turn away."

Sarad laughed, "you are probably right. you're the first person to really talk to me as well. my family mostly ignores me or gives me orders. I talk to the librarians and the school cooks, but that was about it..." he shrugged, "i'm sure i was just an annoying kid they put up with, though." he had caught his breath back and stood up, "so, shall we go and take a stroll to see if we can find this Tami?" he asked, grinning mischievously.

"if we find her on our walk I will not only ask her out I will give you twenty bucks for being psychic. But yea let's head out. That's enough racquetball for me, today." and stood up, stretching. "We'll walk a bit then head back to the dorms to do homework. Lord knows if I procrastinate any longer I'll just get buried under it."

Sarad was glad to not being going back into the room. he'd had fun while playing at the end, but that didn't mean walking back in there wouldn't be hard. "sounds like a deal to me." he stretched as well before taking the racket back to the front, Dale holding his own racket and the ball. "where shall we walk to first? maybe towards the track? just to see if we get lucky?" he was enjoying teasing Dale like this, though if they did run into Tami, he would probably disappear for a little while to give them some time alone so Dale wouldn't feel pressured. "what do you think?"

"Listen now," he laughed, returning the ball and the racket, "Now you're just turning the tables in your favor. Nah, we'll walk to the library or something, walk around the sidewalk til we've had enough." he started walking back out in to the sunshine, "I'm not that eager to give you twenty bucks. Maybe we can walk towards the classrooms, see if you see any girls from your club."
