Vyntyr smiled and examined the little crystal again, imagining that she could pick out the tiny irregularities that made it hers.
"Tell us, young one: Are you familiar with the Initiate Trials? The Trials a youngling must complete to become an Initiate, and eligible to become a padawan?"
Well, yeah. And no. "Well, we aren't told the specifics... But my clan leader told me that they would be tests to make sure that we understood our training enough to be trusted with the additional responsibility... And that, before we were to become padawans, we must construct our first lightsaber."
"Very right. Well, there are three main tests that we subject a youngling to to ensure that they are ready to progress. The first is a test of knowledge. The youngling must understand the tenets that they will be working to uphold, and must be knowledgeable about the Order and its philosophies. You appear to know the Code and have an understanding of the philosophies that govern us that few your age could match."

Vyntyr furrowed her brow. What was this about?
"The second test is one of self-discipline. A test that proves that you have control over yourself and are willing to stay the path that those tenets outline. You must be able to prove yourself strong-willed enough that you will stand by your beliefs in the face of any threat, and against all odds. You demonstrated your willpower when you sacrificed a happy life without the Force for a hard life in service to the Force. You proved that you were strong enough to resist the temptation of your worldly compulsions, and that you were the master of your instincts, not the other way around. This is a very important lesson for a Jedi to learn, and you have shown exemplary performance in this area."
Okay.... So they were praising her. She was feeling uncomfortable again. She tugged at her sleeve nervously.

She looked around trying to read the blank expressions on everyone's faces. It was no use. She couldn't get anything out of them.
"The third test is one of ability. The youngling must prove themselves capable of not only upholding the tenets of the Jedi Order, but must have a connection to the Force that is strong enough to aid them and guide them throughout their lives. You have a very deep connection to the Force, and a deep understanding of the abilities that you have been introduced to, and are clearly using your connection to the Force to guide your actions. Few of us have to rely on the Force so heavily as you, let alone at so young an age. It must be a powerful influence on your life."
Wait.. That was all three of the tests... Were they suggesting...?

Vyntyr looked at Grand Master Gaois, waiting, nervous.
"Vyntyr, do you feel that you understand what it means to be a Jedi?"
Vyntyr swallowed. That was a loaded question... "I... I feel like I've been taught enough to know how not to not be one, if that makes any sense... There is so much more I could learn, but I at least know what to avoid on my journey to reach that point."
Was that a good enough answer? She looked around the room and swallowed hard.
Her eyes came to rest on Master Laro's lips, curled into a soft smile.
"This is somewhat unorthodox, young one. But you will no longer be a member of your clan. From this point forward, you are a Jedi initiate, and capable of being selected by a Master as a padawan."

Vyntyr's jaw dropped. What did that even mean? She was... Promoted? How was that possible? She looked incredulously around and was met with smiles from all the masters.
"The Council does not interfere in such things, but the Force will guide you to a Master, and when you meet, you will be bonded by the Council as Master and Apprentice, until such a time as you can pass the trials of Knighthood and become a Jedi Knight. Do you understand?"
Vyntyr's mouth was dry. "I- Y- Yes, Master Gaois. I understand."
Master Laro spoke in a firm voice, and stepped down from her chair, into the center of the Chamber, beside Vyntyr. "Masters. I feel that the Force has guided me to meeting young Vyntyr, and, if she is willing, I would be honored to accept her as my padawan."

Vyntyr went completely slackjawed and her heart stopped beating dead in her chest. Master Leyren Laro was offering to become her master!? What bizarre world was this!? A member of the Jedi High Council was offering to teach her!? She almost forgot to answer. "I-... Uh- Of course. I would be honored to serve under you, Master Laro."
"Does the Council find this union agreeable?" There was a chorus of "yes" from the other members of the Council, and the Kel Dor bowed his head. "Then we are in agreement. Initiate Vyntyr, if you would kneel before Master Laro." He waved his hand as Vyntyr stood and her chair slid out of the circle.

Vyntyr knelt before Master Laro.
"Vyntyr. Do you swear to uphold the tenets of the Jedi Order, and to serve as its protector and servant for the rest of your days as a Jedi of the Order?"
"I do."
"Do you swear to maintain balance and to seek to preserve the light of the Force against all enemies, both internal and external, for the rest of your days as a Jedi of the Order?"
"I do." Vyntyr's mouth was dry. She couldn't believe this was happening.
"Do you swear to uphold the tenets and laws of the Galactic Republic, and serve and protect her people and lands?"
"I do."
"And do you, Vyntyr, swear fealty to me, Leyren Laro, Master of the Jedi Order, and swear to follow my teachings, my rules, and my will for the duration of your service to me, and, through me, to the Order, to the Force, and to the Republic?"
Vyntyr was shaking. "I do."
Master Leyren placed her hands on Vyntyr's shoulders. "Then rise, my padawan."
Vyntyr stood, still visibly shaken, and paler than normal. She looked around and was greeted by warm smiles, the warmest of which was Master Laro's.
"Welcome, Master Leyren Laro and her padawan Vyntyr. Is there more you wish to discuss with the Council?"
Master Laro nodded "Yes, Master. I would like to request some time to tend to my padawan. She is unwell, and I would seek the cause of her ailment. The Council saw the extent of her illness today, and I would know more of it, but it will take time to discover the extent of her damages."
Something about the way Master Laro spoke about her made her feel both protected, and as meat on a slab. She wasn't sure if it was a comfortable feeling, but she figured she'd have to get used to it now.
"The council will grant you your leave. You are free of your responsibilities on the Council until you have found your answers, barring some unforeseeable circumstance."
"Thank you, Master Shul. In that case, we have nothing further that we wish to discuss with the Council. Thank you for your time, Masters."
Vyntyr and Master Laro bowed and left the Council Chamber, and Vyntyr almost collapsed as soon as they were out the doors. She had to sit on a bench and catch her breath.
Master Laro smiled, amused. "Are you alright, padawan?"
Oh Gods, there was that word again. Vyntyr started laughing despite herself. She couldn't believe all of this. "I just... I can't even... What just happened?"
Master Laro nodded. "The will of the Force."

It was dawn, on the first day of Vyntyr's new life. She had barely slept, instead laying in bed and staring alternately at the ceiling and the little crystal that had made all this possible. If she had never found that little green gemstone, her life wouldn't have changed. She would be right where she'd always been. It amazed her how quickly things could transform before your very eyes.
Master Laro's first instruction had been for Vyntyr to return home and rest. The girl had been more than happy to comply, for as excited as she may have been, she was still physically and psychically exhausted. Vyntyr had foced the Force to suppress her pain and laid down, hoping to get some rest.

The first item on the agenda today was to pack up what little belongings Vyntyr had and move to the padawan dormitory. The other younglings in her clan watched in confused excitement as Vyntyr packed her bag and otherwise made ready to leave. Several of her old friends congratulated her, while a few watched on in silent mixtures of jealousy and envy. Vyntyr tried not to mind the ones who did not seem happy for her. Several of her friends walked with her and they talked all the way to her new assigned dorm. She didn't realize how strange it would feel to leave all of this behind. The girl thanked her friends and promised that she would still come back and see them, and even train with them when she had the time before they said their farewells and left her to unpack and settle in.

Vyntyr didn't honestly own much. She had clothing dispensed by the academy, a training lightsaber that she had been assigned, and her lightsaber crystal. She took a whole ten minutes to get unpacked and to look around at her new accommodations. She realized that the room was not much bigger than her old room, but she didn't need anything too big. As long as she had room to practice, and privacy to meditate, she would be pretty content with it all.
Well, she was officially moved in. She shook her head and laughed before she sat down on her bed and focused her inner Force to drive away the pain that had threatened to creep back into her body. She sighed and laid back in bed for a moment, just feeling the new softness of her mattress.

She lay there for a short moment, and then for a long moment, and then finally managed to drag herself away from the warm comfort of bed to face the cold reality of life once again. She stood and stretched, still not quite used to the feeling of being able to move that freely. She took a breath and decided that she'd report to her master now that she'd taken care of what had needed to be taken care of.
The girl proceeded to her master's office in the medical wing of the Academy and buzzed for permission to enter. Master Laro smiled and welcomed Vyntyr into her office.

Vyntyr smiled and greeted Master Laro as the woman returned the courtesy. "Good afternoon, Master." The word felt somehow empowered. She'd always called Master Laro Master. But now, it was different. Vyntyr smiled, giddy about the change.
"Good afternoon, Vyntyr. How are you feeling today?"
Vyntyr remembered the episode in the Council chamber with a mixture of embarrassment and a tinge of terror. She didn't know what had happened, or how, but she was somewhat terrified of it ever happening again. "Better... I'm sorry for yesterday. I really don't know what happened..."
Master Laro raised her hand and shook her head softly "No, child. You have no need to apologize. You're a little sick. We're going to try figure out what's wrong and fix it, I can promise you that. Until then, we're going to keep an eye on you and your training, and make sure that you're well taken care of."

Vyntyr nodded. She trusted Master Laro to take care of her. After all, she'd gotten Vyntyr everything that the girl now had. How does one not trust someone who has given so much to you? "Yes, Master. So what is our next step?"
Master Laro pursed her lips slightly. "How are your muscles feeling today?"
Vyntyr thought about it for a moment. She hadn't really done too much to work them lately. "They're alright. Why do you ask?"
"If you don't mind, I'd rather enjoy watching your performance with a lightsaber. I've seen firsthand your proficiency with Control abilities, but your lightsaber skills are something I have yet to observe. Would you mind spending the day showing me what you know?"

Oh no. "Of course. I wasn't the best fighter in my clan, but ever since you've taught me to make up for my injuries, I've been somewhat anxious to try my hand at it. What form do you think I should use in combat?" She wanted to make sure that her Master agreed with her style. She wanted to impress Master Laro, but she wasn't really good with any of the styles of lightsaber combat. They'd always been far too physical for her.
Master Laro stood and waved for Vyntyr to follow her. They began walking to the training fields. "Well, why don't you tell me a little about the forms, and whether you think they are a good fit or not for you."
