These stairs seemed infinite, but perhaps her determination was infinitely more.
This joke that was her entire life, her entire kingdom? No, she wasn't going to tolerate this. She needed to get to the bottom of this, and she felt the only way she was going to find an answer was by getting to the top of whatever this mad tower was, however high it went. It was fortunate that there were not as many floors to this tower as there was to the old Silver Castle, she admitted.
She tried not to let the sheer daunting amount of stairs she had to climb get to her, nor she she let the absence of anyone's breath, anyone's whispers, anyone's laughs and anyone's footfalls affect her either. If she let it truly get to her, it would just reinforce how little she meant, that some Voice could just remove parts of her as it pleased and taunt her as she tried to reach it, whatever it really was besides some kind of horrific, prideful monster.
But she would reach it.

Looking up at the voice she thought to herself, 'No Harm?' how could the voice say there was no harm if the voice had just let them be. Everyone was flowing up the steps... they seemed endless. He wanted to ask if anyone had seen his comrads but something- magic? Muted the world, making his ears ring with the engulfing silence. He was tired, but he had to find the rest. His partner, thankfully, was there to keep him moving despite his nervous shuffle.

Ofelia was halfway up the staircase for the first level when she thought she heard the voice calling out.
People were rebelling against it, doing other things? It...it was a weird sound and she paused in her steps before deciding to continue on. There was no need to hesitate now, everything she needed was at the top of the tower. Perhaps her comrades were there as well?

More shapes drifted past, more people, other kingdoms, other kings and warriors and pawns but Jerry kept his eyes on his feet, counting the steps silently to himself as they trudged onward.

She liked fists to the face. Nkosazana wasn't usually one for violence, but something about this staircase, and something about what had been done to her Kingdom, and really, all of them. There wasn't a single person who wasn't duped by whatever had happened to them. All of them were fake. All of them were lies.
They were all created by The Voice.
And so, she would destroy The Voice.
She could see the exit to this floor. It was so close. She could make out something on the door about losing ones voice, too. ... Great. Just great. Of course, it didn't really matter, did it?

And so it seemed like Ofelia was slowing down. The truth was she was bumping into more people and she didn't feel like being rude and pushing them out of the way.

The top of the stairs were reached with a flourish and Ofelia took a moment to pause as she heard the Voice again. It ranted, annoyed, about how it was wanting to see the True King.
This was not the first time she'd heard someone mention a 'true king' nor did she think it would be the last. It was more the way the voice was addressing it that had Ofelia stop and listen, taking a rare moment to think.

Jerry wished he could still talk to Roar in his head... maybe that would help fill the silence.... but suddenly a voice did speak up... The Voice, in fact. He wasn't sure what it was getting at... whatever created this world, he supposed, had little to do with Hunters. Just... make it to the top, the answers, and Harrison, and the others would be there.

All he ever wanted was the True King?
No, Nkosazana was pretty positive that all The Voice ever wanted was to be The True King. Really, why else would he be manipulating any of this? It would make no sense for him to start this nonsense otherwise, nor would it make any sense for him to keep on pushing if all he wanted was to make someone else The True King.
Or maybe he just thought he would have the ultimate power, then, if he was the reason why someone got to such power.
"Good," she murmured, with the last time she might speak.
"I hope you love rolling around in your betrayal."
