He could understand the Amityville and Horseman sigils, but . . . that blue one was the one he eyed the most. It reminded him of the runic symbols on the wall by the fake lake, of the blue cracks and fire from the warped Red creature, and it reminded him of the crystals that had erupted from the earth during the siege and consumed them all. And to think, it used to remind Mort of just himself.
He wondered why the horsemen owning the booth had chosen to make one like that, or if they too even got the same vibe from it he did. It was bad juju as far as he was concerned . . .

Tea wasn't the beverage that Thackery really preferred, but he wasn't going to turn down the opportunity to taste something delicious. He perused the booth, noting curiously that there were things here that definitely were not tea. What were those?
He tried to ignore that bemused look coming from the minipet as he randomly picked one of the snacks, rolling it between his fingers. It was kind of sticky and didn't smell particularly sweet...
With a shrug, he popped it into his mouth and chewed slowly. Not bad, but not amazing. Interesting.

Once again, Ev was craving herself a spot of tea. And this place was a great one to go to for a delightful challenge. One she would eagerly accept.

And speaking of bad juju . . . the readings he had gotten were a little disturbing. Not from anything outright dangerous or threatening, but just in the fact that they were eerily close in their observations. Or maybe he was just reading too far into them; Ramona would have said it was silly to put stock in carnival readings, but Mort couldn't help himself. He was a man of science, yes, but he was also a man that often fell prey to enough despair to be willing to accept that even something as random as drinking from a teacup could tell him something about his future.
When things grew desperate, so did the measures to keep control become. And that was why Mort had subjected himself to several forms of fortune telling, in the hopes that by arming himself with even a vague grasp of knowledge that he would be able to keep something bad from happening to him like it always seemed to.

Maybe if he tried another one, he could definitively decide whether or not he liked these things. The next one he chose was a little bit crispy, and smelled familiar. And it wasn't bad at all, really! He licked his fingers when he was finished, resolving that he'd just try one more. If this one was tasty, there had to be others that were good.

With a thoughtful hmmm, Thackery looked over all of the options again, choosing one near the end. This one was also breaded and kind of crispy, and smelled even better than the first one. Maybe the trick was to pick the ones that looked more meaty. Yeah, he had this all figured out! Content with himself, he tasted his latest selection and savored it. Best one yet.

So how many tries had he given it now? Belladonna's tarot readings had been the first time he gave such a thing a try, and on both occasions her interpretation had more or less come into fulfillment - hell, it had been one of the aspects of a particular reading that had given him the courage to ask her out to begin with. Here at the festival he had given the tea dregs and Frost's version a whirl each, both with their own strangely relevant results.
Though Mort tried his best not to think about the tea one, because drawing that combination of rooster and ox was most mortifying.
Then again, he thought, any result could technically be spun to fit anyone's life. Rather than actual mystic power, Mort was beginning to believe that these sorts of operations centered around the power of belief rather than magic - how willing the person wanted to see something in a particular way. And his just so happened to be along the veins of anxiety on several topics the readings were applied to.

The more Mort let himself ponder the mechanization of the world, the more he was pulled into a lull, a peaceful few moments where his brain whirred and his thoughts blurred together, and he closed his eyes to savor the muted noise and the smell of freshly brewed tea both good and bad. For a short breadth of time, he actually took the time to breathe in and out, not quite meditating but not quite dozing off either.
It took the resident cluppy nudging into him on accident to wake the zomboil up from his reverie. The dog snorted softly in passing as Mort rubbed his eyes and stretched. It was probably about time he left anyway; his mother was going to be looking for him.
