.........A Place AfarSome notes that came up to clarify with this contest. Entries should be clear, concise, succinct and complete. You aren't submitting an encyclopedia on the place, you're submitting the 2-4 page summary of the place in an encyclopedia of hundreds of places.
The purpose of the contest is to end out with locations that are usable by the community as a whole without constantly having to ask if this or that is 'legal', I'm looking for that same level of professional design and writing that lays down the illusion of subtext/sub-history and a rich world in something that would fit, much like Ravenloft/exatled/Changeling/etc, into 2-5 pages of overview summaries of the location. Hence the categories in the entry code.
Try not to focus on making a world the breadth of Tolkien's Arda (which took him 20 years) for a contest that asks for a location description in an rpg core rulesbook.
Here's an example from the old Domains of Dread Ravenloft corebook. I scanned it just to give an idea of the sort of writing that gives enough description that let's players and the GM know exactly what the place is like as well as allowing them room to write and create themselves within the guidelines without worrying if they're breaking some sort of rule :
FalkovniaIt's three pages, and has some differences from what is expected for the contest, but it still serves as a good 3 page example that would allow any of you to write a short story set in the fictional land of Falkovnia.
Domains of Dread is OLD. It belonged to TSR, now to Wizards of the Coast. I do indeed own a copy of the book. The excerpt here is just an example, not for profit, so please don't misuse it or misinterpret its posting here.
