Alex laughed. "I'm sure you would have, but would you have shot? I mean, come on. You're a desk jockey working for the NSA, who probably has never been in the field, or even fired his gun. And also, my gun was loaded. There is such a thing as a safety, though I'm sure you have no idea what that is, as again I state, you have probably never shot it." Alex normally wasn't so abrasive, but it being the anniversary of his father's death and being in a room full of criminals was making him such.

Ansley was listening to what Alex said, and so far, he was right. But he was forgetting one little detail. "Alex," she said, putting down her file and looking at him, "believe it or not, most people working directly for the federal law are made to go to gun handling. Yes, some don't, like desk jockeys, but I'm pretty sure he has either went hunting in his lifetime, or has been to a shooting field." She didn't want to piss him off, but it was common sense. Most guys have either been hunting or at least shot a gun once in their lives.
((MINOR EDIT!!! make sure to note it :3))

Alex frowned. He had overlooked that point, and he didn't enjoy having holes poked in his argument, but he couldn't be mad at her, ecspecially after what had just happened between them. "Thanks, Ansley. Whose side are you on here? Must you ruin my fun?" He gave her a wink, to let her know he wasn't mad at her.

"Actually, I do work in the field." James said truthfully. He had done field work on many, many occasions. "And to correct you, I have fired this gun. Many times. So many times in fact, it's twice been to SIG and back to get it repaired, once when the rifling wore out, and another time when my slide cracked." he explained. "As Ansley pointed out, I do go to shooting ranges. I have also been hunting with some friends. Oh..." he looked at Alex again. "And I've killed a guy with this exact same handgun." he finished. It was a carjacker, but it had been an armed carjacker.

Alex's eyebrows shot up. "Well, I'm impressed." He sated sarcastically. "I never knew you were so proud of killing someone. Also, I'm sure you broke your gun because you spent the whole time on the range trying get better aim, and obviously you failed since you've broken it twice." He smiled at James, waiting for a comeback. This was turning into a battle of egos and wits.

"I'm not, actually. But when a guy's coming at your car with a twelve-gauge autoloader in his hand, shouting at you to get out, you do what you have to." James pointed out. In fact, he still remembered that moment when he killed the guy, and still felt remorse. Then he laughed. "You profess to know about guns, and yet think it's because I can't aim that my gun failed." he said, laughing again. "The rifling wore out because the gun was not new, and had been used many times by its previous owner. I just added to it and eventually the barrel wore down. The slide crack was a manufacturing issue, but it still took a while for it to develop." he pointed out. "You're welcome to come hit the range with me at any time though." he added. "Might let you take my 10/22 for a spin." he said, chuckling.

Alex nodded. "Oh! So you weren't good enough to get a new pistol, so you were given a used one. I see. And yes, I would enjoy hiting the range with you, showing you my moves, though a Ruger is a little under me. Thanks for the offer though." He laughed, and approached James. "I prefer something with a little more kick. Say a SPAS-12." He held out his hand. "Truce?"

"Truce." James said, reaching across the table to shake the man's hand. "By the way..." he pulled out his phone and searched through some pictures. Once he found it, he showed the gun picture to Alex. "Pretty cool, isn't it." he said. "There's a Ruger 10/22 hiding under that. Sure you still wanna pass?" he asked with a grin.

Alex whistled. "Ya know, I may have to take you up on that. Just give me a time and we can go see how well you can shoot." He went back over to Ansley. "Hey, I noticed that you had a worried look on your face earlier. Did I do something wrong? What's up?" He talked quietly so no one else would hear.

Ansley was watching the boys hash it out. Men. What's with them and guns? She'd never been able to figure that out. When Alex asked what's wrong, she looked a little guilty. "No... you haven't done anything wrong, it's just..." She wasn't sure how to put it.

Alex grew a little worried. He put a hand on her shoulder. "Hey.....come on. You can talk to me. What's wrong? If we need to go somewhere to talk, we can?"

Ansley nodded and did just as she had before; she grabbed his hand that was on her shoulder and led them to the empty hallway. She never felt comfortable with talking about her personal life in front of a crowd. When she stopped, she turned around, still holding his hand. It felt nice. She looked up at him, into his eyes. He had almost a whole foot on her in height. Wonderful. Not sure how to start, she asked, "Are we...a...thing? A couple?" She dreaded the answer.

Alex let her take his hand and lead him outside. As before, it felt natural to have her hand in his. When she looked into his eyes, he felt a sudden feeling in his stomach, like butterflies. He sighed when she asked the question. He could tell she was nervous, but he didn't know why. He held her gaze and looked deep into them. "That's not something I can honestly say. It's not a question of if we are, but a question of if we could be....so, Ansley. Can we be?"

Ansley was a little surprised at his evasiveness, but she was still caught up with the question. The answer she got was what she hadn't expected. Then again... nothing outside of work comes to be how she expects it to be. "Alex..." she said, her voice really quiet. Could they really be a couple? Instead of answering his question, she decided to work her way around it. "You see..." Okay. Maybe she couldn't dodge it. "I...I don't know..." Her eyes watered up. "This is exactly like my parents. They hitched up knowing the terms, and look what happened..." She knew he wouldn't understand. For all he knew, her mother could've been a striper and her dad the owner of the strip joint.

Alex saw her tear up. "Shhhh....It's okay, Ansley. Don't cry." He said softly. He didn't understand what she meant about her parents, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to press, but he couldn't stand to see her crying. He pulled her close to him and stroked her hair. Oh hell...I'm probably gonna screw this up more but..... "It's okay." He said again. "What did you mean about your parents? Did something happen to them?"
