Earendil shook his head, his eyes fixed on the majestic creatures. "No, not snakes," he murmured to Senka. "They have arms ... claws ... definitely dragons."

He had never seen a dragon before ...

The dragons kept diving for a while, but eventually they slipped beneath the surface of the ocean, and once again everything became calm.

Roydon suddenly appeared behind everyone. "Good news," he told them. "There was no damage, and they didn't change our course. If all goes well, we should arrive within a week or two."

"Arrive?" Earendil blinked at his cousin. "Arrive where? I wasn't aware that we knew of any other land."

Roydon smiled and winked at Lin. "Feanaro," he told them all. "The place where Serenity is from."

Lin's heart nearly thumped in her chest upon hearing that, "We can go to Feanaros?"

She didn't think they would actually go there, especially with the possibly of real demons being there too, and not the Gaian friendly demons mind you. She was interested though, but the idea of it....

"Really?"

Roydon smiled. "We'll sail around it, scout it out," he told her warmly, "and if it seems safe we might venture ashore. If there's any sign of danger though, we won't be stopping. We have more than enough supplies left to last us a good long time. We don't need to stock up on food or anything. Safety first. We've a fine crew on board this ship, and the last thing we need is to lose any one of them."

"Well said," Earendil smiled back. "And quite understandable."

"That's good to know," Lin replied.

It was a relief to know they would scout out the island first before doing anything else. She hoped it was demon free by now, but one never knew with these sort of things. For all she knew there developed a demonic ecosystem over there by now.

"It would be really interesting to see, and to study if we can...."

From a historic point of view to know what happened would be good for people.

Earendil watched Lin curiously. "Did Nako ever tell you about that place?" he asked her. "Or her parents? I think you visited them a time or two ..."

He himself knew only the very basics: that they had been chased away by the demons who had taken over the land.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 24, 2009 8:46 pm

"I know the basics," Lin replied, "I mean I don't know why there were elves all the way out here. Only that there had to be both light and dark elves because the language actually hadn't changed at all..."

Lin paused a bit.

"I don't know much about the demons, only the part where a shapeshifting one followed them, that's how Serenity ended up the way she did, and that was after she barely survived being attacked by it."

Lin only knew that part because one of the questions that had come up was why Serenity had been feared. When Lin was small this idea of someone having magic so strange and so different that one would be shunned was odd to the little girl where in Gaia anything was possible if you just looked.

Earendil nodded. "Then you know about as much as I do. As much as anyone, really, except Ninako and Nineko. And they don't like to talk about it much ... which is understandable."

He looked around for Shiro, but the neko had disappeared. "I wonder how Shiro feels about going near demons that are so different from him," he murmured.

"That's a good question, especially when for the most part demons as a word is just a counterpart to angels," Lin murmured, " I've been told by Mom angels and demons are sourced from the same origin. So in theory we are the same people, but somewhere along the lines took different paths."

Lin shrugged as she leaned against the railing looking thoughtful.

"Somewhere people began to associate demons with mischief and, or evil, and angels with kindness and goodness, but that's all bull. Demons aren't always evil and Angels aren't always good, in fact Angels can be stuck up snobs."

Earendil smiled and tapped the end of Lin's nose teasingly. "You're forgetting," he winked, "that we do not have angels in our world. In your world, that may be the history of your kind, but in this world, the history is far different."

He looked out over the ocean, leaning his elbows on the rail. "I ... do not know all of the history of the demons of our world," he murmured, "so I do not know of their origins ... though with how much Shiro read of Sir Valdemar's work, and how much time Rhea spent in the palace library, I am certain that one of them must know."

He looked around. Rhea was talking with Leyenda again, with Celeb chasing after them, but Shiro seemed to have gone below deck - most likely to make that journal entry about the sea dragons.

"Perhaps we could ask, if you're interested," he suggested, turning back to Lin.

"No."

It was clear and decisive, Lin's eyes narrowed at the thought. Besides she knew that even if Shiro or Rhea knew they wouldn't know everything. Not as long as Sir Valdemar kept that damn book hidden.

Lin coughed for a moment and realized she probably came off as rude, "Sorry, I... uhm... I already know."

Earendil blinked at Lin, and there was hurt in his eyes. He had never heard her speak so flatly, so decisively, so negatively, before. Ever. To anyone. For a moment he wondered if somehow he had offended her (though he had no idea how he might have done that), but then she explained herself, and he relaxed slightly.

"Oh," he said softly, staring at her blankly. "I ... see ..."

Though it was clear from his tone that he didn't.

Lin sighed, she knew as a prince he would have missed the whole briefing on the creature that had appeared all those years ago. Whose only blessing was that it brought together Tinuviel with the love of her life, and that was the only good thing that could be said about it.

"The visit where we had talked about traveling the Southland, it was before Tinuviel married do you remember it? Do you remember this talk about a creature that was roaming the lands making it dangerous for everyone?"

It was a rhetorical question of course, she knew that Earendil probably remembered it. It was also the visit where she found out Earendil also had unwanted admirers.

"To understand exactly what kind of news I was bringing Sir Valdemar showed me the day when all things wrong were brought into the world, including demons."

She watched to see if the beautiful creatures would rise up again, she liked them. They reminded her of dolphins for some reason.

"They are such ugly creatures, unlike Gaian demons who some can be very beauitful, but what stands out more is what they brought with them. The hopelessness, the despair, the screaming, the darkness... Unlike Shiro they have no self awareness, no real intelligence, they're simply just created to kill and cause as much pain as possible. Except the rock trolls, they had self awareness, and with that the potential to be good, but it wasn't meant to be."

Those poor druids she thought, they were probably very open minded people to allow a rock troll to learn magic. At least she would imagine so, but what did she know? She only saw their end.

Earendil's eyes grew dark. "Then there truly is no hope for them," he murmured sadly, his eyes fixed on the ocean in the distance. He sighed heavily. "Then let us hope that we do not find any of them," he said quietly, "because it would not be well to come against them."

The water remained calm, the ocean's surface completely unbroken. The sea dragons, it seemed, had vanished, at least for the moment. It was a strangely deceptive calm, Earendil thought. He knew that beneath the surface, there was a flurry of activity. Sea dragons, whales, fish ... and who knew what else.

"No it wouldn't," Lin murmured looking at the calm ocean.

She looked at the waters again and wondered what was underneath. Who knew what sort of fish one could find, or creature since maybe not all of them would be fish she was sure.

"I wonder what sort of fish an ocean has."

Lin knew that their ocean was not salty so they didn't have to worry about water, but she wondered if that affected what fish they had compared to Gaia.

Earendil smiled. "I have no idea," he admitted with a chuckle. "All my education, decades and decades of education, and I'm afraid I can't name a single fish, other than the bass that Arwen fed us at Namonuito."

He chuckled again softly. Somehow, the thought amused him.

~~~~~
The sea dragons did not appear again for the next two weeks, and just when Earendil was beginning to doubt the coordinates that they had received from Rigel, Serenity's father, the call came from on deck:
"Land ho!"
The prince was in his quarters, studying a map that he was working on, when the call came, and he dropped his quill and ran from the room, racing up on deck to see the land that had been sighted.
"There!" Leyenda pointed excitedly from the bowsprit as he joined her there. "Look!"
Just ahead of them, that was, to the southeast, a speck of black could be seen in the distance.
