"No, my good lady, it is quite alright," Pen assured Kara with a sincere smile and a glint in his eye. "After all, if I could not seriously take what I am quite able to give out, I would indeed be quite the hypocrite, would I not?"
He turned back to Elrohir. "In answer to your question, sir, I found that my family was entirely too serious ... when it suited them. I found it to be ..."
He hummed and hawed a bit.
"... tedious. They blamed it on the attack on our city when I was a young man ... I blamed their reactions to the attack. None of the children who were taken were ever seen again, and I wanted to find them back ... I was forbidden. As soon as I was able, I left to try to do some good in my own way, part of which I see as bringing amusement to those who lack it."
He gazed at Elrohir. "And you, sir, lack amusement," he deadpanned.

Elrohir frowned at Pen, but even he could see that the man was still teasing him.
"All right," he nodded, "I can accept that."
Ahren and Adan grinned at Lin, snickering. "Biggest kid I ever saw," Ahren grinned at Lin, repeating his words, still in elvish.

Lin chewed on her lower lip trying not to smile, "That isn't so funny," she murmured back to them.
It was times like these she was grateful the most she decided to learn and that someone was willing to teach her. She would have been so left out otherwise.

Kara giggled at that, the man it seemed was a bit of an actor in his own way. Though she wondered if there was more to it than that. She tilted her head at Lothiriel a bit.
"At least you won't be bored on your travels," she told the young lady, "It's always good to have someone to talk to."

Lothiriel giggled slightly at Kara. "He can be quite the comedian," she agreed brightly, "though there are times he needs to be kept in line."
"You mean threatened," Pen commented darkly, his lips turning out in a slight pout.
"Yes, threatened," Lothiriel agreed cheerfully. "If you would just give up, I wouldn't have to threaten you anymore. I'm starting to wonder if you don't enjoy it."
"How could anyone enjoy threats on their body?" Pen frowned, seeming to be quite serious.

"It may not be funny," Ahren grinned back at Lin, "but it's true."
Adan nodded his agreement. "And Feng's a different story," he protested. "She's not old, and she's not a grown-up, and she's awful pretty."
Which he meant of course in a little kid kind of worshipping way.

"So I've heard," Kara replied wryly, "We had actually been told about your threat on him earlier."
She thought it was sort of funny, but only because she didn't really think Lothiriel would hurt the man that badly. Perhaps do a bit of injury but nothing extreme.

Well Lin couldn't disagree with Adan, Feng wasn't a grown-up, but she was sure around here being a Teen was pretty close enough. Besides, Feng was nearly two whole years, that was old for a Second.
Though she didn't know what being pretty had anything to do about it.
"She's almost a grown-up," Lin murmured.

Pen's eyes grew wide and he looked at Lothiriel, shocked. "What did you tell them?"
"Nothing," Lothiriel replied airily. "I just told them that they don't have to worry about you bothering me, that's all."
But there was a twinkle in her eyes that showed that she could be just as mischievous as he could, even if she didn't show it.

"Almost means isn't," Adan quipped. "And she's not old. He's old. Older than Mama or Ada. Older than Elrohir."
Ahren nodded his agreement. "And if he's a traveler that means he's supposed to be smart and stuff," he added. "But if he keeps on doing things to make her threaten to cut off his man parts, then he can't be smart at all."

"I wouldn't it about it too much," Kara assured him.
As long as none of the children asked questions about it, she was sure it would be quite fine.
"At any rate, it'll be wonderful to have you both here, though Donovan is going to be missing out on most of it," she eyed her husband.

Donovan simply shrugged, "Then I simply must ask you what I missed, I'm sure both you and the girls will have plently of interesting stories to tell when I get back."
He actually looked forward to that, especially coming out of the girls, children had such a wonderfully blunt and interesting way of viewing the world.
"For a Second, Feng is older than most," Lin replied back.
She thought about what Ahren had said, and had to admit she would disagree with him, though only for a little bit.
"Well he can't be stupid if he's still alive after traveling for so long."

Lothiriel smiled at Donovan. "I'm sure your girls will have plenty of stories to tell," she assured him as calmly as if she had known him for many years, instead of only a few minutes. "After all, things change here so quickly compared to them ... and there are always new adventures to be had."
Pen moved to tap his head again, but just as his finger rose to his temple Lothiriel's hand shot out of nowhere and smacked it away without her even looking at him.

The boys looked at each other thoughtfully at that remark.
"Yeah," Adan shrugged noncommitically, "just wait until after they've been traveling together for a while longer. We'll see if he's still a man the next time they show up here."
Ahren snorted. "I bet he isn't."

Kara coughed a bit and tried not to laugh, in some ways she could have swore Lothiriel acted like his wife than a traveling partner. She decided she would keep that thought to herself.
Though it didn't stop Miyu from giggling at the two, Lothiriel was right! This man wasn't scary, it was too silly to be scary.
