And most of the time, you don't get them until you are like 30ish.

You get them when life hates you.
I'll need Rem to abck me up on the details probably, cause I've enver had one, but my moms' a dentist; the root canal's this chasmy thing in your tooth, and I suppose they have to dig in there to fix whatever's wrong.
Remy, is your tooth still there?

-clears throat for story time-
Ahem. When I was in 7th grade, I chipped my tooth. Chipping a tooth causes damage to the nerve inside of the tooth. After they capped my tooth, there was a slight seem between my real tooth and the fake part. Bacteria could get into my tooth over time through that hairline seem.
Now since the nerve was already damaged from impact, it was already starting to die. Because the nerve was dying, that bacteria started to cultivate and move up into the bone in which our teeth are set (its called the maxillary bone.) The infection in the bone was actually causing me pain, hence I went to the dentist.
A root canal is where they drill a hole into the back of a tooth and proceed to clean out all the dead nerve tissue. Once the tissue is out, they put sealant into the empty cavity within the tooth and seal the hole with a temporary filling.
This procedure can take anywhere from an hour to about two and a half hours.
