Toby nodded. Sure! He'd worry about tracking water everywhere if there were any more rugs around. He'd just pick his way carefully. It wasn't like it wouldn't evaporate anyway. He carried Maia out and put her down, but didn't give her time to go much of anywhere before he began to shake at the tip of his nose down to the end of his tail. Water went everywhere, in every direction, and Toby felt a pleasant tremor when he was drier that visibly rippled through him. Ah, nudity. He could do with some more food, though.

Maia shot Toby a frown after having water land on her, but she was altogether amused. She put her shirt on, then her shirt. She began to wring out her hair.
"Lets go get you something to eat." She offered him her hand.

Toby crouched down and patted his back. Wet doggyback rides? He rethought this and pulled open the mirrored closet to lay a couple of towels on his back. Okay. Doggyback time? He was only this tall once a month!

Once towels were laid, Maia didn't hesitate. She climbed up on Toby's back. "Don't forget your board," She reminded him. "I'm thinking maybe I should wait to ask about getting a job here." She was nervous. It seemed like a lot of responsibility.

Toby's immediate instinct was to respond with words, even as he crouched to pick up his board. What came out was a bunch of garbled, untrained animalistic sounds. He huffed and wrote as they walked, ducking under the doorframe so Maia wouldn't bump her head.

The sooner the better? She reached up to stroke Toby's ears. "Alright," she agreed. "When? You need to rest tomorrow, after work. Do you think Dari would help?"

Toby nodded. Of course Dari would help. He tapped his own head before returning to the board.
He'll remember.
He'd be home early tomorrow in all likelihood. With Maia maybe it'd start being worth it to take days of after transformation. Would Dari be able to join him? He hoped so.
Feels good. The ear stroking, of course.
Then he erased all that and went back to the more important conversation:
We can study. tell them tomorrow? will take time. paperwork Except the "k" was rather mushed against the edge.

That's right. Dari remembered everything, he probably knew exactly what was on the test. She smiled at the next message and continued to stroke Toby's ears. Tomorrow? "Where's their office?" She asked. In all the months she'd been here, she didn't think she'd ever met Toby's boss. "What do I say? Just that I'm interested?"

Alright, this would be hard without words. He motioned for Maia to come even though she was on his back, hoping she'd take it as a signal to wait until they got back to the room. He went back toward where Dari was stationed and found him sitting with the headphones around his neck, watching the computer screen spew data. He smiled when they came back.
"Have a nice swim?"
Toby let Maia down and motioned to Dari. He meanwhile stayed near the wall and dug back into the fruit basket.

Maia went to Dari. "I was talking to him about meeting with people to let them know I'm interested in a job," she said. "We had fun, though. I wish you could've joined US." But someone had to man the computer, someone had to be able to find Toby if something happened.
"He said I should go tomorrow?"

"Oh, sure!" Dari seemed excited that Maia was interested. "The sooner you start, the better."
Toby pointed to Dari, then to himself from back at the wall.
"Oh, alright," Dari said in reference to him, grinning a moment, "Yes. They take a few days to process a background check and character references, not counting weekends and holidays. It could be an entire week before they even call you in for an interview. Then there's more time before the exam, and then even more time before training. It's a bit of a process."

Background check? Character references? Well, the background check was easy. Nothing was on it. "Like from you and Toby?" she asked. "And Lori?"
"You'll show me where to go?" she asked, looking towards Toby.

"Yes, exactly," Dari said, "and we'll all put in a good word."
Toby nodded, then held a finger-phone to his ear and pointed up.
"Uh. He'll bring you up. Yes."
After this many years they had grown to understand each other on several levels.

Toby was going to call them? Why? "Thank you," she smiled at him. "He said we'll study, should we start after the interview? I've never had one before." Did she dress nice? What did she say?

"Study?" Dari asked, "Oh, for the exam? Sure. It may have changed in the past few years but we can help. We both had to take it. It's the same for anyone going into an active position. We'll go out and get you some business attire, hm?"
Ooh, Toby thought. Maia in a pencil skirt.
