Kamehameha School's Haole Brownies
(makes 48 brownies) I know, it's a huge batch....you could probably 1/2 it tho.
2 1/4 cups brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour
2 1/2 blocks butter
7 medium eggs
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup nuts (optional - I don't like nuts)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cream butter, brown sugar, white sugar and salt. Add eggs and vanilla, stirring until well blended. Add flour and baking powder and mix on low for 30 seconds. Add nuts, mixing on medium for 2 minutes or by hand for 4 minutes. Grease two 13x9 inch pans and divide brownie mixture.
Place on bottom rack of oven and bake 35 minutes. (Brownies will rise gradually for about 25 minutes and then flatten. Continue to bake for 10 minutes after they have flattened completely.)
Immediately remove from oven and cool.
Brownies should be slightly underdone as they will continue to cook outside of the oven.
It's easier for me to melt the butter slightly beforehand.
I eat this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel syrup.
