probably some type of objective-based since none of surviving units were scoring...

You do have a good point about that but I wonder who would have been left if the battle kept on going.

Game type was Capture & Control. In the last turn, a lucky Missile Pod shot killed his last living Berserker. We played it through for the hell of it with the ensuing CC and the Shas'O lived for three turns in CC.

gonk
Let's compare statlines after equipment..
Chaos Lord has a Bike and Mark of Khorne WS6 BS5 S4 T5 W3 I5 A4 Ld10 Sv3+/5+
Shas'O WS4 BS5 S5 T4 W4 I3 A4 Ld10 Sv3+
Now, in a turn of combat, the Chaos Lord will attack first. Assuming law of averages, his Bloodfeeder will give him an additional six attacks, pushing his total up to 10. 11 if he charged. Of those ten hits, 60% will hit and, of those, 50% will wound. That means that, in a turn, the Chaos Lord has inflicted 3 unsaveable wounds onto the Shas'O. This is assuming that you're not a stupid c***e and have not bought a shield generator. If you have Shield Drones, up to two of those can be negated instantaneously.
The Shas'O attacks back. 50% of his attacks will hit, and 50% will wound. He then has a 66% chance of saving against that wound.
In a single turn of combat, the Shas'O has, at worst, lost three of his four wounds. At best, he has taken one wound and has lost his Shield Drones.
In the game, my opponent rolled for a total of twelve attacks in one round and for a total of fifteen in the next. I only survived by sheer benefit of his dice giving up on him.
I was ecstatic that he lived through the first round of CC.

words epic fail come to mind... one of the best hth characters in whole game failing to kill dedicated fire support character... though I once saw fire warriors clubbing marine chaplain to death with butts of their pulse rifles, and even a platoon of guardsmen charging and bayonetting a carnifex (t6 variety), so nothing involving dice surprise me anymore... and thats why i love flamers for auto hits and power weapons for no save the less dice rolled, the better and thats why my fave weapon award goes to flamestorm canon - autohit, no cover saves, no armor saves unless 2+

Wow ten attacks and still survive what a lucky guy just like me surviving 8 lascannon shots.
And come on a lot of attacks no matter how good your armour is you cant take like 100(exaggerating) armour saves or whatever nothing can take that much punishment.

Once I saw Inquisitor take 23 successful 4+ rosarius invulnerable saves vs Deathwing power fists (each one capable of instakill). Truly Emperor protects (sometimes)!. That was 1 chance in about 8 million...

Theres one thing i'm curious about the Tau. How come they see close combat as primitive, yet the Etherals use close combat weapons openly. Its odd to say the least

It's backwards and improper, but the Ethereal caste carry the blades as signs of office, even though anyone putting them into combat should be hit over the head.

Scarlet Obsidian Rose Theres one thing i'm curious about the Tau. How come they see close combat as primitive, yet the Etherals use close combat weapons openly. Its odd to say the least Ethereals CCW equivalents consists of symbols of office, or an honor blade. Symbols of office are like the pope's crozier - you can use them to hit people over the head with them, but they are really just improvised weapons - sticks. The honor blade has an actual blade on it, but they're ceremonial in function rather than meant to be used to actually harm people - Ethereals compete in 'elegant, bloodless duels' using them to solve disputes. Tau disdain close combat as a method of war, not close combat in all forms. On top of that, Ethereals aren't combatants. They're political advisers and battlefield chaplains, they aren't meant to be in the thick of it, and if they are, they should be directing more capable soldiers (Honor Guard) who will eliminate threats to the Aun before they close to melee.

anyone fielding ethereal in the face of callidus assassins, indirect fire weapons, outflanking units, deepstriking units (especially vanguard vets) is asking for trouble...

Van Evok anyone fielding ethereal in the face of callidus assassins, indirect fire weapons, outflanking units, deepstriking units (especially vanguard vets) is asking for trouble... Agreed, i was at my local GW and there was a IG against Tau battle going on. Lets just say that a Manticore caused a right mess when fired on an Etheral and his honour guard

Ethereals really are one of those pointless HQ choices unless you like BS4 Fire Warriors.

They are pointless. They would be better off being in the background rather than the official army list. It would be like if the High Lords of Terra were an official HQ choice for the Imperial Guard; the two units do not need to be there.
I must admit the Ethereal would be cool to put in a diarama. Maybe have him taken by Chaos Space Marines of even normal Space Marines, maybe even Tyranids
