The concept of Tifa "lying" to Cloud about his past can be a very contriversal issue that I enjoy getting into... because I came to understand both sides of the argument.
Case against Tifa:
For many people, lying is lying and is just as hurtful no matter what the excuse. Tifa's intentions for this lie under the guise for people who thought this was the worst thing Tifa did to Cloud because, I hate to admit it, Tifa lying about the past is what ultimately leads to Cloud's breakdown.
By not speaking up about the tragedy for her point of view she did unintentionally encourage Cloud's mental instablity. People against Tifa see the potential and highly likely subliminal reason for this... because if Cloud found that he and Tifa were not close childhood friends and that he was not her hero SOLDIER... Cloud may go away; leaving Tifa alone. Rather or not Cloud would have is a different argument... Tifa's fear of this was very real however.
Case for Tifa:
It is really hard to say how Cloud would react to Tifa being the one telling him the truth. There was, in Tifa's eyes, a likelihood that Cloud's reaction could have been just as bad. However, when Cloud does break down, in her sobs, Tifa apologizes to him and realizes that her attempts to protect Cloud was what hurt him. Tifa is so overcome by guilt, concern, and love that she feels her only way to fix it is to stay with Cloud and leave the group. Tifa had nothing but good intentions for Cloud.
My case on Tifa:
I think both sides are right in a matter of speaking. I'll save the rant as to why when I have more time.

Well, I get what you're coming at. A lie is a lie, but a lie to help protect someone is still something you should be yelled at about.
A good example, Joe Dirt. No one knows that movie? Well, you should watch it.
This guy is looking for his parents, and his girlfriend tells him his parents are dead. However, he finds his parents, and they are very much alive, yet they were neglectful parents who are complete assh*les and could give a rat's a** whether or not he lived or died.
She lied to him to try and protect him, not to hurt him in any way. That's sorta what Tifa did.
Even if it did hurt him later on, she only wanted him to be safe. It was lying, but she did it out of love, not out of spite. And in the end, she did cry, and she wanted him to forgive her for lying to him to protect him.
Like how my mom lied to me about how I wasn't fat when I was younger. Sure, it hurt later on when I found out (Man, I was like Peter Griffin), but she just didn't want me to hurt right now. It's all very confusing...

I really don't think it mattered all that much if Tifa had lied or not because I believe that even if she had told him the truth he would have acted in much the same way.

Well ya know, if we were in the same situation, you'd understand what a predicament Tifa was in. Even Aeris knew that something was wrong with him, but didn't say anything. She just tried to help him, little by little. Of course, she didn't know much about Cloud, more like noticed his personality warp. She couldn't outwardly say, "Cloud, you're messed up." But you know, even if she did say that, Cloud would say, "It's okay, I'm fine." Like the time when Sephiroth took Tifa and Cloud to a flashback in Nibelheim. Cloud pretty much thought that he was himself even when Sephiroth was toying with his mind. If Tifa told Cloud the truth at the beginning of the game, he'd be in a sorry state and the FFVII story wouldn't progress. rolleyes

Cloud was messed up either way so he would have reacted the same way weather told by Tifa of found out by Sephiroth.

Wow, look at all these wonderful pieces and discussion! It makes me feel bad that I can't add something worthwhile to expand on it *sniff* crying
Anyway, I was wondering who the wolf is in AC (no, not Nanaki, I know who that is). Don't know what I'm talking about? Watch the movie and you'll see this wolf on several occations, including a scene with Aeris. Who is this wolf and what does it symbolise?
