Brennan moved fast, his fingertips pressed hard against the keypad. He had to work fast.

He closed the coolant valves, then upped the heat to max. Finally, he commaned the computer to meltdown. The timer flashed on the screen: 12:00.

"Alright Hammer! You've got 12 Minutes... Get your asses out of here." He turned to the door, but then turned back to the Lieutenant. "Oh Mike..." He ripped his dog tags from his chain and tossed them to him. "Hand them to Captain Resnick."

He gave him a crisp salute, and slapped a fresh MA5B into his Rifle.

Michael took the tags and saluted the Captain; he knew better than to argue with a man who had nothing left to lose. "Leito, let's move!" he yelled to the Spartan before he turned to run while stuffing the dog tags in a pocket on his chest. Spartan-019 trotted after him shortly taking point because of his motion tracker. They hustled out to the service elevator and got inside, hit the button, and began their ascent. For only a moment he felt a sense of peace before the elevator hit the floor they needed, and the doors opened. Outside those doors were at least a battalion of Covenant troops, all scavenging through UNSC weapons. Spartan-019 decided to record all of this in case O.N.I. asked for any information, and in unison he marked all of the marines and O.D.S.T.s in the room as K.I.A. The Lieutenant hunkered down and looked around seeing two modes of transport; a pelican, and a warthog. Michael shut off his external speakers and spoke into TEAMCOM, "that pelican's our ticket out of here." Leito nodded, and knew that he would be the one flying their escape.

For once in his life, Michael Travis Brennan was not scared. He knew his fate, and he had come to terms with it.

The masses of Covenant that were baying for the blood of what lay on the other side of the barricade. The 2 devices that blocked the doorway rumbled and shuttered from the force of bodies pushing against them. But it did not budge. This must have been his saving grace... God must have wanted him to savor his last few minutes.

Mike sat his back against the plexi-glass that protected the outside from the energy exerted from the generators. He sifted through the rounds for his HE Pistol and loaded them into the clip.

He looked over at the display. Its bright white text read 9:32. The Captain gave a grin, and continued counting his rounds...

Michael and Leito crept in the shadows, keeping low to avoid any covenant they could. They were already halfway to the pelican, which meant there was only 25 feet to go but there was one big problem that hampered their succession: a hunter. It stood right at the opening to the aft portion of the bird. Michael turned to Leito, "alright, I know you're fast so you'll have to be the rabbit." The Spartan grinned inside of his helmet, and stood up running fast as he could. Michael stayed down and waited, watching as Covenant chased after. The hunter moved in pursuit as well which meant it was the perfect time to move. He jumped from his hiding spot in the shadows and ran for the pelican, but he stopped abruptly and almost fell to the ground. Something closed around his throat and an elite appeared out of thin air. I should have been more careful, he thought as the elite raised the plasma rifle to Michael's face. "Wort wort, blarg, wort blarg" he said imitating an elite he once saw commanding others.

The elite stopped and the menacing look in it's eyes phased for a moment; the hesitation he needed to drive the knife from it's sheath into the elite through it's mandibles. It dropped him and clawed at the knife jutting out, but whether or not the sound that thudded on the floor was the elite or the knife Michael had no idea. He was already inside the cockpit pressing every button he felt he needed to before he grabbed the controls and pulled up. The pelican stirred to life and began to lift off the surface of the hanger bay. The pelican dipped for a second before a voice came over the com, "I'm in." Michael hit the thrusters and boosted out of there, plasma rounds coming after them as they made their escape. He was sure that they were the last of the UNSC reinforcements inside the base, but when he saw quite a number of pelicans lift off towards orbit he knew that the majority had made it out alright. Michael made sure he was a safe distance away from the base before he turned the pelican around to see it. Leito, Spartan-019 stepped into the cockpit and strapped himself in the copilots seat.

The timer hit 0:20. Mike was prepaired for the inevitable. He could tell the Covenanent on the other side were having trouble with the equipment. Their movements were more coordinated. It scared him a bit but he could still keep his nerves.

0:19

Mike accessed a COM link to the ships above. It was a weak one, and one he would not keep up for very long. He brought his Mic peice to his mouth and began to speak.

0:18

"This is Captain Michael Brennan. Former member of the Black Ops unit. These words are for whoever recives this message. Right now I relay this message in a Generator room beneath the Facility known as Belfast on VerCrouse, one of the last known planets left that has survived the siege of the Covenant. It is with great strife that I relay this message, I only have 15 seconds before this facility explodes with the force of 15 megaton warheads. Right now I have chose to make the great sacrafice that every armed forces soilder that has fallen in the UNSC has made. I make this message as a relay of hope. To my brothers, to friends, and most of all to my Captain.... Godspeed. End Transmition..."

0:09

Mike threw his COM in the corner just after saving his message to a Global Network. He gripped the stock of his Rifle as the top peice of machinery gave way and toppled forward. He could see the mass of Covenent; Jackals, Grunts, Brutes... all, wanting him, the lonley human that stood between them and their prize. Little did they know, they would soon get what they want.

0:05

Mike leveled the MA5B with his shoulder and fired, connecting rounds with many ligaments that were in the cocktail of bodies swarming on the other side of the make shift gate. He continued to fire, the recoil pinged every neuron in his arm, and caused him great pain. But, soon it would be over, and soon, he could join his squad.

0:03

The sweat from his brown blinded him, but he continued to fire straight. No way would he not take down a few uglies before going down himself. This was his Alamo, this was his last stand, and by god, he would make it the best ever seen.
With all of his might, and all of his strength, he shouted at the masses, "PRAY THAT YOU MIGHT BE SPARED! YOUR GODS CANNOT SAVE YOU NOW! AND THUS, I REFUTE THEE!"

0:00

Michael's life... ended there....

As the explosion blossom Michael turned the pelican away and sped towards a signal they had picked up. "Sir, he's two clicks north of here" said Leito manning the sensors. He was a good soldier, one of the best naturally, as he was raised as one. Unfortunately Michael could not talk about it, seeing as if he did he would be Court Marshalled and killed by firing squad. "I see him" said the LTC as he brought the ship down. The ODST jumped in with all of his gear and hit the button on the inside of the ships hull letting Michael know it was good to go. He closed the Peli's aft hatch and took off again.

Leito was still monitoring the sensors when a computer screen on his right went blank and a series of numbers appeared there. Immediately Spartan-019 took a picture and stored it for future reference, knowing that it might come in handy. Then the screen turned back into it's original numbers and coordinates, only this time it referred to the UNSC Monterey. "Sir, looks like we're supposed to be heading for the Monterey." Michael glanced over at the spartan before returning his attention to where he was flying. There, near the MAC station the UNSC Monterey was circling around. He hit the thrusters and took them in close, landing inside Hanger Bay E-5.

Michael turned off the pelican and opened the aft hatch, but he stayed seated; he needed a minute. His officer, his brother, his friend had died down there defending them, giving them a chance to make an escape. He took a deep breath unbuckling the pilots seat and slouching down. Techies were outside the vehicle making sure everything was fit and ready for the next flight. "He's a hero, you know. He'll be remembered" said the Spartan. Michael had almost forgotten that he was there, and when he spoke he spoke with true intention and feeling; sensitivity that Michael had never heard in a SPARTAN before. "Yeah, I know, I just wish he could have been here with us too." He reached inside his front pocket and pulled out the dog tags, dangling them in front of his own eyes.

"I can't believe he's gone, it just doesn't seem real." Spartan-019 stood up to exit the Pelican when he said, "then if you can't believe that, believe in his sacrifice." The Spartan exited the pelican while Michael silently mourned inside, grasping the tags with a will like no other. This war would end, and he would be there when it did. But a promise was a promise and so when he exited the Pelican he stepped up to a pilot and gave him an order, "fly that pelican to the Armengald, and give these dog tags directly to the Captain. If anyone tries to stop you, tell them I gave you the order." The pilot stood rigid and accepted the task, moving to the ship while Michael moved to the vacant private quarters of a dead colonel.
