Saxophone here (going to Mello for DCI), I've been practicing have a decent tone, but...
My lips (as an African American) are naturally full and I feel dumb, but hitting notes on the staff can be a problem for me, and it mught just be that I am on the staff, but don't realize it. I don't have another mellophone to compare a C or B to, so, there's that, and when I tried getting a trumpet to help me, he/she is too busy trying to see how high he or she can go. Blah. If you could help PM me.

hey! I have/ had the same problem as you- my lips are really big too sweatdrop - so learning the horn was extremely difficult [only after we learned how to play the proper way- our bd knew nothing knowledgeable about any instruments except the piano].
So my advice to you would definitely be, DON'T GIVE UP, and PRACTISE!
I know it's so cliched and we may not want to follow , but it's very true! so many times I wanted to throw my horn at my BD when he stated that every horn is as difficult as the other/ every horn is equally hard to learn *ahhh scream *, becuase no, the french horn is MUCH harder than say the clarinet or baritone horn. [no offence]
I give you props for going for the mellophone, it's a beautiful sounding instrument. Presently, I can hit all the notes into the second octave on the treble clef when I started I could only play notes in the bass clef redface .... so there you go. 3nodding
Also, you might want to try to get your hands on a CD like Essential Elements or something so you can emulate the tone and get the notes right .
