What a man does for pay is of little significance. What he is, as a sensitive instrument responsive to the world's beauty, is everything! - H.P LovecraftAnne laid down in a fetal position. the cold iron bars surrounding her, though the market was heated, she felt like was covered in ice. Her stomach growled, she hadn't eaten nor drank and as a result, she felt like a dying animal, simply laying as she waited for death's cold embrace.
Death. if it weren't for death life would be fun, it sapped the joy out of the world like a kid drinking a juicebox, it didn't matter what Anne did, at the end of the day she will die, her effort's would only be rewarded with a cold void. It wasn't uncommon for slaves to die here, she wasn't pretty, nor did she was she strong, or disciplined, she was smart but who wanted a smart slave?, the ideal slave is dumb, submissive and pretty, this way they'd give their owner's all the fun without the hassle of being a master, but Anne was none of that. she could tell as she only costed 100$ and was for sale, a phone costs more than her.
But that wasn't the biggest punishment life gave her. The real punishment was her life's work, the book of wonder's being put on a shelf right in front of her, it was a old book she found in the back of a library, it looked out of place on the shelf, which was colorful in order to attract attention in it, the book was bound in leather, with a green gem cut into the shape of a octopus on it's cover, the pages were crusty and yellow from age, it was clear the book was way older than her or her grandparents. The Book of wonders was filled with the mysteries and secrets of mankind, eldritch things that shouldn't exist, blood rituals and forbidden magic, she had dedicated her life to studying that wondrous book, but she only managed to document a few pages before she became a product.
Then she felt a sort of warmth in her right hand, she was so busy gazing at the book that she never noticed a handsome gentleman grab her hand, staring at her with a fire in his eyes, it was clear that the boy wanted her, she found it strange, she hardly knew the man but he seemed infatuated with her, she wanted to pull away her hand, mistrustful of the man, after all men don't come here to buy wives, they came here to buy toys, but she knew that his obsession with her meant that she wouldn't be harmed. Thank you she mumbled, delirious from the lack of water, grasping his hand feebly. She pointed towards the book of wonders with her other hand, please she begged buy it, it's my life's work

((Sorry there's no picture for this post. I'm on an XBox right now so I am unable to insert one, but I will go back and edit as soon as I can get on a computer. Also, you are an amazing writer! I apologize if my skills don't match up with yours - writing has never really been my strong suit.)) One thing that had surprised Leon was the cost of the slave. At only $100, she was by far the cheapest slave on the market. That was far less than most of the clothes in his wardrobe... He wondered what it was about her that had caused the slavers to price her so low - but then again, it didn't really matter to him. What mattered is that she would be free now, and her life would likely be much better than it ever had been before.
As Leon was waiting for Anne to be set free, his eyes trailed over to the colorful shelf that was near her cage. It held a single heavy, leather-bound book. It looked at to be hundreds of years old, it's pages yellowed with age. He raised an eyebrow, wondering what it was doing in a place like this...
"You're welcome!" said Leon kindly. The young woman's voice was hoarse, and he could tell that she was probably thirsty. Luckily, he had plenty of water in his limousine. He was glad when her cage was finally unlocked and opened, he was ready to take her home...
Anne had pointed to the book of wonders, asking him to buy it for her. It was her life's work, she said... "Of course I will, dear." answered Leon with a smile. He wrote another check to pay for the book, which ended up costing much more than she had. He opened it up gently, skimming through it to see what was inside. The Book of Wonders it was called, and it's pages detailed all manner of occult and arcane things. Witchcraft, star signs, alchemy, blood rituals... one page contained a drawing of a pentagram with runes and writing in latin. Being a skeptical agnostic and a man of science, he didn't necessarily believe in any of this hocus-pocus. Still, he wasn't one to judge. He respected it, and found it fascinating.
"So, I take it you're some sort of scholar, or historian?" asked Leon, closing the book and handing it over to Anne. "It's nice to meet you, by the way... I'm Leon Hawke, and who might you be?" Naturally, Leon wondered if the young woman would recognize him, or at least his name... Being the owner of a major tech company, he was quite famous after all.

((It's ok, you're writing is good also, thanks for the compliment, but there's no need to reedit the post.)) Anne got up from the ground, clutching onto Leon for dear life, her legs wobbled and nearly gave in, neglect has took it's toll on her, it wasn't uncommon that a slave market would neglect their own products, in a era where elves and faeries existed, inhuman slaves are seen as prettier and more "exotic", Anne was a human and not the prettiest human either, so she was only given food if one of the guards pitied her, most slave guards aren't the kind who pity products.
She grabbed the book, inspecting it for damage, she realized that a page had been ripped out, she frowned at it, carelessness was the bane of this world, people went through their lives without a single regard for others, though they are undoubtedly the smartest species on this planet, though she wondered what would happen if aliens arrived, would they be impressed with what we had done?, or would they simply shake their head and sigh.
She flinched in surprise, she had been so engrossed with the book, that she barely listened to Leon, "A Scholar..of sorts" she answered, "I'm Anne Rice" she answered, wondering if Leon would recognize who she is, her family was rich, but no where as rich as him, she was a scholar in the occult, though she was often seen as the laughing stock of her family, the supernatural existed, the proof was in her book, she offered the world proof in the supernatural, but all everyone did was stare at her and wonder if she's a loony.
Though she did know who Leon was, she researched his company in order to see what made it famous, it was technology, something everybody believed in. Both Leon and Anne could offer the world a clear cup of water, but the difference is that everyone would buy Leon's cup for hundreds of dollars, then squint at Anne's cup and question it.
"Why me? she asked, each word that came out of her mouth was a chore, she wanted to know why she had been bought, out of all the people in the world, Leon was something different, something unpredictable, she wanted to know exactly why he chose her, he's rich and attractive, he could have any girl he wanted if he just asked, yet instead he chose to buy one, one that was on sale.

Leon allowed the slave girl to clutch onto him, wrapping his arm around her for support. She could barely stand, and she looked very thin and frail. No doubt, they hadn't taken very good care of her here... It saddened him greatly just to think of how poorly she had been treated. This was all about to change now that he was here for her, however. She would be spoiled from now on, and given everything she could ever want or need.
"Anne Rice, huh? Just like the author!" chuckled Leon, with an amused grin. "I've read quite a few of her books, although The Queen of the Damned is by far my favorite." He had never heard of this Anne, however, only the horror novelist she happened to share a name with.
Anne had asked Leon why he had chosen her. "Well, there's something about you that simply... caught my attention." he answered, smiling at you. "I can't quite explain it, but when I first gazed into your eyes, I couldn't look away. Somehow I knew, deep inside, that you were the one I was looking for. Besides, you definitely look like you could use the help..." Out of all the slaves there at the pet shop, she looked like she had been the most neglected. He could see the pain in her eyes, and it had called to his heart and soul.
"Come on now... let's get out of this hellhole." said Leon. He began to lead Anne slowly through the crowded pet shop, heading towards the front door of the market. A long black limousine could be seen waiting outside for them.

Leon's arms felt warm and cozy, like a pillow, though she didn't show any love on her face, she was grateful that he was here, though she didn't share the same love for him, she just met him!, she simply couldn't see herself falling in love, love was nonexistent, it was all simply chemicals in the brain, it was lust with a pretty name. Though she did admit, he was cute. If she were some random girl on the streets, she would find Leon creepy when he confessed his love at first sight, but she didn't want him to send her back.
She looked back at Leon, making eye contact as she did so, he intrigued her, she doesn't believe that true love could exist, that love is based on attractiveness alone, yet there was something in his eyes, one that couldn't look away from her, this man was completely infatuated with her, she couldn't find out why. There was always a reason for attraction, for some it was the color of a girls hair, for some her personality, it was always obvious to find, but for Leon it seemed he had no reason to want her, only that he did.
She nodded when he led her to the limousine, she didn't want to go anywhere near a slave shop again, it was a cruel business that cared naught for the lives it ruined, not everyone was equal, some were on top of society, like Leon, who could have everything he could ever want, some struggled to scrape out a life, but whoever it was, the slave business could take whoever they want whenever they want, only the extremely wealthy was safe, but that was not guaranteed. She opened the limousine and got in, the seats were the most comfortable thing in her life, she didn't know how long she spent in that horrid market, but she did know that it was too long. without hesitation she found a water bottle and began to gulp it down, it was cold but in a refreshing way, it was more than any guard had ever given her.

As soon as they had emerged through the front door of the slave market, Leon took a deep breath of the cool, fresh air. It was nice to be outdoors again after being in that horrid place, and he was sure that Anne would agree. His ride could be seen waiting nearby - a luxurious custom-built Range Rover stretch limo, with deeply tinted windows. As they approached, one of the back doors slid open for them...
Leon sat down next to Anne on one of the comfortable leather seats. The inside of his limo was truly luxurious - there was a large flatscreen TV, a miniature refrigerator, even an aquarium filled with colorful tropical fish. He was about to offer Anne a bottle of water when she had opened the mini-fridge and taken one for herself. "Go ahead, Anne - help yourself to whatever you'd like!" he said kindly. He then pulled a tray out of the fridge that was filled with a variety of sushi - both nigiri and rolls. There wasn't enough for a whole meal... it was more of a snack or an appetizer. He planned on having dinner prepared for them when they got home, however. "Are you hungry?" he asked, taking the plastic wrap off and helping himself to a spicy tuna roll. He imagined she must be, considering how they had treated her in the slave market.
The limo driver had started the engine, and they pulled away from the pet shop, rolling through the streets of the city. "So Anne, care to tell me a bit about yourself?" he asked, feeling naturally curious about her. "How did you end up on the slave market, if you don't mind me asking? ...And what kind of life did you live before?"

Anne impulsively grabbed whatever food she could find, stuffing her face with sushi, though she wasn't a fan of sushi, she found that these tasted like nothing she has ever had before, it tasted like heaven in a roll. if there was a heaven, she was pretty sure it looked like this limousine.
She stared outside, breathing in the crisp outside air, she had no idea how long she had been inside the slave market, there was no way of telling the time, after a while of food deprivation, she had trouble staying conscious, even with the noise of the market place, if the limousine was heaven, then Leon would be a angel, here to bring her out of this wretched hive and into a new world.
"My life was boring, I was born in some suburban town, my family was rich enough to give me a fun life, but not enough to be exempt from the hunt" she explained, The Hunt was what the slave market's called "Resource Gathering", it was a list of rules that was put on them when the government tried to stop their relentless kidnapping, though it was often broken so much that it became more like "guidelines", people like government officials and their family, millionaire's were exempt from it.
"in order to alleviate the crushing boredom, I researched everything, I was always a smart girl so it wasn't hard for me, but I was too smart, in a couple months I learnt everything I could learn in high school, but then I found that there simply wasn't anything left" she explains with melancholy, it was almost impossible to find anything that interested her anymore, she found that she grew a sort of depression, there was no magic in this world. "Everyday I think of what life is like, there's nothing to this world with worth in it, we're all just raw stock, we do whatever frivolous tasks we have until we die and that's it!" her voice began to crack, she tried her best to hide her feelings, but it was clear that she was more than bothered.
"Then I found this book, it was in the back of a library, no one had ever touched it for years upon years. Out of all the things in the world, this has the biggest meaning, in it holds everything we don't know, I've studied it for a year and I've only gained a fraction of it's knowledge" she explained, her voice filled with enthusiasm, everything in the world could be explained, but that book, it was everything that was new, to her it was her life

From the way Anne was voraciously devouring her sushi, Leon could tell she was indeed starving. Soon enough, the plate was empty. "Did you like the sushi, Anne?" he asked her "My personal chef made it earlier today - he's pretty good, isn't he? Any time you're hungry, just let me know and he can fix you anything you want."
Leon listened intently as Anne spoke about her life prior to becoming a slave. She had been born into a rich family, whereas Leon had been born into a middle-class suburban family and had become wealthy on his own... But there was definitely one thing they had in common; their intelligence, and their love of learning and gaining knowledge.
Anne's next words caused Leon to frown a bit. "No offense, Anne... but that's an awfully pessimistic way of looking at life, don't you think?" he asked. He could hear her voice cracking, so he wrapped his arms around her and held her, doing his best to comfort her. She looked as if she could just use a hug right now, after all. "The way I look at it, we are much more than just 'raw stock'. Existence is an amazing journey, from the day we're born until the day we draw our last breath, and perhaps afterwards as well... Our world is filled with beauty and wonder just beckoning to be experienced. There are so many places to travel, interesting people to meet, opportunities to be taken. Every day is an adventure... And of course, there's the greatest experience of all - the prospect of finding love, starting a family... He was a natural optimist, the type to see silver linings where others only saw clouds.
Leon was clearly fascinated when Anne spoke about the Book of Wonders. He could hear the enthusiasm in her voice, but he understood perfectly why she felt this way... "Would you mind if I studied the book too, Anne?" he asked, smiling at her. The prospect of unlocking the answers to all of the universe's greatest mysteries was thrilling to him.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. - H.P LovecraftAnnie felt a warm feeling when he held her in his arms, she wished that she could stay there, after becoming a slave, she had forgotten what it was like to be loved, though there was no way she loved him back!, after all she just met him. She'd spent most of her life hiding her emotions, it wasn't something for her to share, the only emotions people wanted to see was happiness, anything else was not invited. She wanted to believe his words, it made the world around her brighten with color, but her thoughts whispered He's wrong. look around you. there is only pain. ripping away the happiness that he gave her. "I guess you're right" she responded, she hated the idea that life held no meaning, his philosophy was much better, but the voices in her head made much more sense.
Though his last words had struck her the most, it was quite clear what his intentions were for her, she wasn't his slave, she was his wife. whenever she wanted to be or not, which she didn't, she was a free girl, she didn't want to have a family, if she settled down she'd become nothing more than a housewife, living only to take care of a bunch of ungrateful children. Thank you for all this, I really mean it" she thanked him, he didn't have to treat her this way, he could've taken advantage of his ownership of her, but instead he chose kindness, a choice that was picked seemingly everyday, "But I don't wish to be you're wife, I want to be free" she told him, if she married him, she wanted it to be because she wanted it, not because he bought her. though she wouldn't admit it, she had a certain part of her, one part that wouldn't mind the life of his wife.
She pushed away from him, leaving his warm embrace, acting as if he never hugged her, she grabbed the book and opened it, flipping to a page, one that pictured a ghost, twisted into a hideous form, surrounding it was people, most of them in fetal positions with their mouth's open, as if they were screaming in despair, everything about the book felt wrong, like it felt like a book that wasn't meant to be read, it felt like a book that should be burned. But Anne felt begged to differ, it was horrific yet beautiful. the page was yellow, the writing on it was in Latin, written in ink. "This is a good page" she told him, she liked this one, mostly because it was about the afterlife.
"When you die you become a ghost, ghosts need a power source to survive, this comes in the form of pain, when a human comes closer to death, ghosts are powered by it, the more pain the more powers that are gained, if a ghost refuses to harvest the pain of others, it simply fades out of existence. Ghosts that harvest a large amount of pain transform into Sin-Eater's, which are powerful enough to affect the Physical World, thus using their powers to harvest even more pain, they take the form of objects such as a toaster, a cup or a book. The strongest Sin-Eater was known as Gehenna, which nearly destroyed humanity by causing the great flood." she read the book out loud, being able to understand Latin, the weirdest thing about the book however, was that one of the figures in the pictures, looked eerily like Anne

"You're more than welcome, Anne... it's the least I can do for you." he said kindly, smiling at her "And that's all right, I don't expect you to fall in love with me and want to get married overnight... Such things take time, and we do have the rest of our lives together, after all. I'm sure that if we spend long enough together, we'll eventually come to love one another... or hate each other's guts." He then chuckled "Or maybe a little bit of both!"
When Anne grabbed the book and opened it, Leon leaned closer to her so he could see it as well... He had to admit, the illustration on the page was awesome... A spirit in the form of a hideous monstrosity, and it was surrounded by people writhing and screaming in agony and despair - it looked like a picture from a metal album cover. As smart as he was, he unfortunately couldn't understand the writing because it was in Latin. He had learned to speak four languages, but they were all languages of the modern world - English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Arabic. "Well, I can't understand the text, but the artwork is pretty nice..." he said, nodding his head in agreement.
Anne read out loud, speaking of ghosts, sin-eaters, and the Great Flood... Being a firm believer in science and an agnostic leaning towards atheism, Leon was naturally disinclined to believe such things. He was skeptical of most things that were religious or supernatural in nature. He wasn't the kind of person who could accept things simply on faith. He needed to see it with his own eyes, an even then he needed scientific proof that what he was seeing wasn't an illusion. Still, he found these things fascinating nonetheless. "No offense... but how can you be sure that the words written in this book are actually true? And that it's not an elaborate work of speculative fiction?" he asked, stroking his chin thoughtfully. It was then that he noticed the picture on one of the pages. "Hey, that looks a lot like you!" he said, pointing to it.

Leon's answer was good enough for her, though she was certain that every married couple, hated each other after the love disappeared, love seemed to be like a fire, it burns and burns away, but it never lasts long until it's extinguished, though Anne didn't have the right to make any assumptions, after all she never felt it herself. She died a little inside when Leon thought the book was fake, everyone believed that she was wrong, it was natural for one to be a little skeptic, but most people were willing to believe in dumber books, some people took the word of old books to the be the truth, despite their being zero evidence for it being real, but her book had evidence, she knows the magic in it is real, she'd used it for herself more than a couple times, but yet it was still discounted as fantasy.
"I know it's true" she told him defensively, this book was her life, if it was fake so is her life. "This isn't some work of speculative fiction, it is real!" she spoke, flipping through some of the pages in order to find one of the rituals she could use. but when Leon mentioned that she was on one of the pages, she immediately flipped back, she blinked a couple times, aghast at what she saw, the book was older than her, most likely written in the medieval ages, but the more she looked at the figure, the more it looked like her, it was even wearing the same pair of glasses, "This is new" she remarked, intrigued at her discovery, she had read the same page a hundred times, not once has she seen that figure.

Anne had insisted that the book was real, without any way of proving it. Her reaction had been similar to that of religious people he had talked to, while debating the factual accuracy of religious texts. Most of them, without any actual proof, were willing to accept the words of a book penned by mortal men thousands of years ago and translated many times since it's original writing as the absolute, undisputed truth. Furthermore, they were willing to accept these words as the will of a god, and as proof that said god even existed. These people had 'faith,' a willingness to accept that which was unknown and unproven as fact. Something Leon would never truly understand, considering he'd never had any sort of faith himself.
And here, it seemed that Anne had faith in what was written in this book. Leon decided to back off, and respect her beliefs rather than question them... He had learned to treat lightly around the faithful - after all, they could be quite sensitive about their beliefs. Many of them treated an attack on their carefully constructed realities as a personal attack against them.
"All right, I'm sorry if I upset you." said Leon kindly, not wanting to push the issue anymore. "This is new? You mean you've never seen this picture before?" he asked, looking again at the drawing on the page. It definitely did look a lot like her, even to the point of wearing the same glasses. He looked between the illustration on the page and Anne's face a few times. "This looks so much like you, it could be a drawing of you... that's so strange." he said, stunned. Perhaps she was right... This book actually was real, and it was magical.
The limo had left the city now, and they were heading along the highway, towards Leon's mansion which was out in the countryside... it wouldn't be long until they had finally arrived. "One quick question before we go back to studying the book..." he said, still unnerved by the appearance of the picture. "What would you like for dinner, Anne? I'll call my chef and let him know to start making it for us, so we can eat shortly after we get home."

"It's fine, it's just that this book is my life, without it, life is boring" she preached, his skepticism was annoying, but it only made sense, but she couldn't help but feel a sort of faith in the book, didn't worship it at all, but with the knowledge she could get from that book, she could become a god herself, without the book of wonder's, her life would be completely bland, the natural world held no meaning for her, though Leon told her it was a adventure, she found that she had done anything but adventure in her life, days just pass by meaninglessly, she was already twenty years old and she was already having a existential crisis, a part of her wished that she was stupid, that she could saunter through life, not questioning it, just simply enjoying, but unfortunately she was born with intelligence but no wisdom, she was smart enough to question life, but not wise enough to find a good answer.
The picture was ingrained in Anne's head, so much about it didn't make any sense, the author of that book was likely dead for centuries, maybe even a for millenniums, it couldn't have been a coincidence either, whoever wrote this knew Anne, but it would simply be impossible. Anne kept her eyes on the figure, could this be from the future?, Anne knew a lot of things, but this one was one she couldn't figure out, "I've never seen this before" she answered him, the book itself was a enigma, she'd read a page once, then read it again and it'd be completely different, sometimes after reading it she'd see things, things that were frightening but beautiful, small things like having the feeling that she's being watched, hearing whispers, though she didn't know whenever or not they were a coincidence, "There used to be three figures" she informed him. "I see things sometimes" she nonchalantly confessed, as if it wasn't a big deal, "a shadow on the wall, following me, watching me, voices telling me to do rather violent things, at least now I know I'm not insane when stuff like this happens, because you're seeing it too" she added, with a straight face, she didn't expect him to believe her, if anything he'd probably claim she's insane. "Oh I'd like to have spaghetti for dinner" she requested, as if spaghetti was more important than her insanity.

"You're passionate about the book... I can understand that." said Leon with a smile "You could say the same thing about technology for me - that my life would be bland and meaningless without it." Not only did he understand how she felt, but he could sympathize with her. It may have not seemed like it, but they had much in common.
Leon leaned a little closer to Anne, squinting as he looked at the book. Trying to understand it, and decipher it's mysteries... How could a picture of her just appear on the pages out of the blue? She then began to speak about seeing figures or hearing voices. "Well, perhaps you're some sort of visionary. You can see things that others can't. Maybe somebody from another dimension or period in time is trying to communicate with you?" he suggested, smiling at her. The thought also occured to him that she may be mentally ill. Perhaps these voices and visions were all in her head... He didn't say this out loud to her, however - he didn't want to upset her.
"Very well, spaghetti it is, then!" said Leon with a grin. He pulled out his cell phone and texted his chef, requesting that a spaghetti dinner for two be ready for them when they got home. He returned his phone to his pocket, and leaned in close to Anne once again, studying the book. "If there's ever anything I can do to assist you in your studies, just let me know..." he suggested.

(we can move this to a different thread if ya want) It seemed like Leon and Anne had more in common than she thought, both were nothing without their life's work, Leon made his fortune off of technology while Anne...tried.
Anne felt a strange feeling when Leon inched closer, she couldn't describe it, but it made her heart race, she couldn't help but gaze at his perfect face, infatuated with him, but this was impossible, love didn't exist, it was just chemicals in the brain, yet she couldn't help but feel a rush when he moved closer to her, after all he was her savior, without him she'd be dead. I guess you're right she responded, scratching her head awkwardly, perhaps she was a visionary, it would make perfect sense. that or she was insane, but she couldn't, it would be a shame if all along she was insane, thus meaning the book was nothing but a silly story. The car pulled up to his mansion, it was a beautiful mansion for sure, if she were stupid she'd gaze in it's awe, but she was anything but stupid, the best part of a mansion was the home it provided, materialism could only help you for so long. She wanted to ask Leon for help with her studies, but she felt like he'd be turned away by it, it was more than a little frightening, not to mention some of the rituals required a blood sacrifice, some of the more simple rituals she could do in front of him, but he'd think she was a psycho if she tried to sacrifice a servant in order to play occult
