Vyntyr took a breath and looked back at Master Laro, clearly nervous. She tugged at her sleeve, fidgeting.
Master Laro nodded reassuringly "Go ahead, child."
Vyntyr took a deep, shaking breath and summoned her courage. It was intimidating being here in the presence of the full weight of the Order, and to be being... Well, judged by them... Deep breaths. "Well, it started a little while ago... As you all know, I have been like... This-" She gestured at herself depreciatively "-for as long as I've ever known... Well, my scars have been hurting... A lot, really, especially lately, but they've always been hurting, it's just a lot worse recently. Well, I was training one day and I was pushing through it, trying to do my lessons, and I couldn't do them..."

"And that's when I saw her. I'd never understood the depth of her injuries, and I only recently returned to Tython, so I only very recently met Vyntyr. When I saw her struggling, I brought her to my lab for a check-up. That's when I asked for the Council's permission to test, and then to privately tutor Vyntyr."
Vyntyr swallowed hard. Master Laro had come to the Council for a girl she'd only just met. That was a lot of faith to put in a child. But then she caught what the woman had said; the pills were a TEST? "Master Laro offered me a prescription that would take away my pain..."
"The test, as we had discussed, was a test of conviction. I'd seen the girl's incredible willpower at work, but I wanted to see where her true motives lay. I offered her a medicine that would take away her pain, but at the cost of her mental acuity, and even her connection to the Force."

Grandmaster Gaois communicated, her voice echoing softly in the minds of all present. "A difficult test... Almost cruel, even, Master Laro, to put one so young to such a difficult decision."
Master Laro defended her decision "I had faith that Vyntyr's willpower would be strong enough to resist the temptation. Even had it not been, the pills I had offered her were placebos. They would have done nothing for her. The deception was necessary to test her resolve."
The air in the chamber grew still.
Battlemaster Konah broke the silence. "Deception is a powerful tool of the Jedi, when used to test our followers without placing them in true harm. Deception is only a bad thing when it brings harm to others. I think it a fair test. Tell us, child, how did you fare?"

Vyntyr was stricken dumb for a moment... Master Laro had lied to her? Vyntyr had trusted her! She took deep breaths and attempted to master herself. "I... I thought the pills would help me, but I couldn't take them. I wouldn't lose everything that would make me a Jedi for something that would make me happy, because being a Jedi is what I've always wanted. It's what will really make me happy, not cutting off everything that made me who I am for the hope of an easier life. I've always been told that the life of a Jedi is not an easy one. This is simply one of my trials."
A couple of the Masters shared looks with one another. "A remarkably noble decision, given your position. And highly commendable. Indeed, the life of a Jedi is a constant struggle. Your own trials appear to have helped you to understand that particular lesson very well. Please continue. We are all very interested."

Vyntyr blushed slightly. She was being praised by too many people. She realized that she did not resent Master Laro for her deception. The woman had merely been doing what is best for Vyntyr. The girl needed to be strong to be a Jedi. If she'd fallen for the trick, she might not even be worthy in the first place. "Well, I turned Master Laro down, and thought that that was the end of it. But she had me come back to see her again. I thought she was going to offer me another medicine, or ask me if I wanted the pills again... But I'd decided that I didn't want them."
"After I had tested her resolve, I asked the Council if I could privately tutor Vyntyr in certain techniques that would help her to control her pain. Force healing is not normally taught to those so young as she, but I felt that she would benefit greatly from having a method to control her pain that allowed her to still serve her functions as a Jedi in training."

Vyntyr smiled softly, but she could feel the stress of the day catching up with her. Her scars had begun to ache without her noticing, and were slowly progressing into full-blown agony at a rate that was not slow enough for Vyntyr. It's okay. She had dealt with pain her whole life, she could handle this. "I- I uh, Master Laro trained and tutored me, teaching me how to control my pain using the Force, and as long as I focus on that, I can keep it away. It always comes back after a while, but I can just suppress it again."
"It should be noted that Vyntyr had sufficiently mastered the technique as to be able to silence her pain after only a few days of light teaching. She has a remarkable grasp on the less physical manifestations of the Force."
The masters shared appreciative looks.
"Why, it had taken me longer than that to grasp the concepts of Force Healing when I got started. That's a quite impressive feat, young one."

Vyntyr was shaking. Sweating. Her nails dug into her palms as her body began to rip itself apart. The pain was so much worse than she remembered.
"Vyntyr, are you alright?"
"She looks uneasy. Here." The battlemaster waved a hand and summoned a chair for Vyntyr to sit down on. "Do you need something to drink, child?"
Vyntyr blushed furiously, despite her discomfort. This was definitely not the attention that she wanted from the Council. She grit her teeth and fought the urge to convulse as a wave of pain wracked her body.
Master Laro took a step back, as if struck. "Master Gaois, did you see that?"
The Celegian gave a mental expression in the affirmative. "Yes. Masters, look at the girl through the eyes of the Force. Something is at work here."

Vyntyr looked around at them all as they closed their eyes and raised a hand toward her. What were they doing? What were they seeing? Why did she- CHAOS this hurts! Her breathing struggled to remain regular as another wave of pain washed over her.
The entire chamber gasped as they saw something happen through the eyes of the Force. Vyntyr suddenly didn't care what they saw.
Master Laro put her hand on Vyntyr's shoulder "Vyntyr, listen to me. I need you to focus. I need you to suppress your pain, can you do that? Just like we practiced. Can you do that for me?"
Vyntyr grit her teeth and tried to take a deep breath, though she failed that. She imagined that light glowing and filling her from within, though for some reason she pictured it this time as a green light. Insignificant. It was light. It began to fill her body and push back the pain. Or so she hoped.

Vyntyr immediately felt the light filling her body and driving back the pain until it was contained at her scars, and then finally eradicated entirely. She collapsed in her chair, her breath ragged. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry. I can continue now..."
The Masters looked concernedly at the girl. Oh no... They think I'm not good enough, don't they? They see me as a liability...
"Vyntyr, would you please give us a moment to speak? Go get yourself a drink and come back, we'll be ready to continue after you get back, okay?"
Vyntyr acquiesced as Master Konah helped her out of her chair and led her out to a side chamber for refreshments. Master Konah was apparently going to accompany the girl for her temporary exile.

Master Konah offered a chair to Vyntyr and sat down opposite her, taking a drink for herself and holding one out for the girl. Vyntyr accepted the beverage gratefully and drank it greedily. Her mouth was dry, a combination of pain and terror had parched her. What was the Council discussing in their absence?
"Relax, young one. We don't kick people out of the Jedi Order for being a little sick."
Vyntyr groaned... She had just collapsed in the Council Chamber. That was not just a little sick.
The Dathomiri smiled "Or for being a lot sick, as it may happen."
Vyntyr nodded and eyed her empty glass. Some time passed in silence before a member of the Service Corps entered and asked if they were ready to return to the Council Chamber. They stood and returned to their respective spots.

Vyntyr's chair had remained in the center of the Chamber, and she was beckoned to have a seat. She really felt weird now. Normally, one stood in the center of the chamber, and the Council sat... This was... Unorthodox.
"Thank you for your patience. Let us continue your story where we left off, young one, if you'd be so kind."
Vyntyr tried to remember where they'd left off. Were they just ignoring what had just happened? She could live with that. Ummm... Oh, yeah. "Well, after I learned that I could control my pain, I started practicing the physical things that I couldn't before. As something of a celebration, I rented a speederbike and went for a hike in the forests, to explore and stretch my legs. I never used to do such things, since they were beyond my capabilities. I was like a completely new person."

Vyntyr continued "I decided that I would let the Force guide me to where I was going to go, so I opened my mind to it and followed where it took me. I eventually wound up in a clearing facing a tall cliff. There, halfway up the face, was a small outcropping of rock. I leaped up to it, and I felt that what I was meant to explore was just on the other side of a boulder that blocked the entrance to a cave. I used the Force to move the boulder and entered the cave. It looked empty, and so I meditated, trying to find out why I had been brought here. What I discovered was that there was a secret door, hidden inside the floor, that was activated by a hidden lever using the Force."
"Really? So it was a Force User who designed the chamber. Fascinating."
"I think it would have had to be. There was no way to reach the lock with anything except the Force. Well, when I opened the door, I entered into a short tunnel, and at the end of it was another small chamber. There, I found a pedestal that had a small stone chest on it. This, too, was Force activated, and it took some doing, but I managed to unlock it. When I unlocked it, it opened, and a small green crystal rose up out of it..."

At this point, Master Laro held up the crystal in her hand, and it slowly made a levitating round to the appraising eyes of the Council. "This is what she found."
"A lightsaber crystal, indeed. We contacted Master Arbalek, and he confirms that this crystal is both peculiar in formation and quite old. Whoever had hidden it must have done so a very long time ago, for such primitive methods to protect such an old style of gem."
The other Masters nodded in agreement. Well good. At least they don't think I stole it.
"Further, he tells us that the crystal is created in such a manner that it increases the effectiveness of a lightsaber blade, and is native to this planet, bearing the composition of the meditation crystals commonly found in the deep caves of Tython."

Vyntyr figured they'd spoken with Master Arbalek while she'd waited outside the first time.
"A fascinating discovery, to be sure, and to have been guided to it by the Force... If what you say is true, then perhaps the Force's will was for you to find this crystal. What are your thoughts, young one?"
Vyntyr suddenly felt small as every eye in the chamber fell on her. She swallowed... "I... I don't know. When I found it, it felt like I had earned it. It felt like it had been a reward for a trial. It felt like it was what I'd gotten in return for staying the path. For working to become a Jedi. It felt... Vindicating. Like what the Force was doing was giving me what I needed to keep on being strong and facing the future instead of hiding from it."
The council grew quiet again.

There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force. " "Very good, young one. Here. You may have this back."The crystal slowly floated back toward Vyntyr, and she clutched at it delicately, holding it to her chest. "I can keep it?""The Council sees no reason why you should not be allowed to keep the crystal. If the Force guided you to it, it was for a reason, and the Council feels that we may know what that reason is."
