Margulis nodded in agreement with the group, though she felt the blood in her veins chilling as she considered who else might be out in these dark woods. Smaller than a lion, but bold enough to think it could take on an angered elephant. She couldn't think of many things that would fit the bill. Perhaps they were after a monster after all. Only time would tell, for now she found herself keeping as close to the group as she could manage though the tremors in her front paws made it difficult to keep her footing. She slipped a few times, her coat getting progressively muddier. But she managed to protect the mark Ngdere had made. She knew it couldn't really protect her, but it made her feel better at any rate.

Baatar nodded in agreement. Perhaps the elephant was angry about something? Perhaps it did mark its scent. He didn't really know much about the creatures, he mused again. He grew cold with the idea of what exactly would happen further on into the woods. The ground was becoming more unstable with the mud and his dark grey splattered paws could not find it with such ease. His grip was slipping and he felt uneasy, but steadied himself. He eyed Saiorse and nodded in agreement. "We should make sure the creature is somewhere where it has no advantage, and is out of its comfort zone, most definately." But the question remained, who did the other prints belong to? Did they have the same intention as they, or were they after something far more sinister? Or worse, on the side of the beast?...

Pam tried to track the prints on the ground but he kept missing them and confusing them with the tracks of those in front of him. When they talked about smaller tracks, he instantly thought of a cheetah. They had those tiny paws that didn't leave claw marks when they travelled and that Pam had seen before. It didn'treally matter what it was, thepale lion decided. Friend or foe, it was smaller than a lion and that meant that it was really not much of a threat against a large group of lions.

His eyes followed a pink lioness who was talking about how to bring down an elephant with the kind of confidence of someone who had done it or seen it being done before. It was rather impressive, really.

"So if we see the elephant, we're supposed to jump on its back?" he asked to no one in particular but seeking confirmation of some kind. It would be nice to know exactly what to do if they were suddenly attacked. He didn't want to be caught by surprise without a game plan and leave his reactions to the heat of the moment when he barely had any real battle experience.

Baatar looked at Pam and nodded gently. "I suppose. I guess attacking it from above means it can't use its tusks fully." He was sure it could swipe its tusks from side to side, but its attack when something was on its back, well, he imagined it would be minimal. "I suggest attacking it either from behind or from above would be the best option." He knew that the front half of the elephant would be the half powered with its charging force, not to mention again, those giant pointed tusks. He shuddered.

The mud wasn't a bad idea. If it was nearby, they could possibly run it back into the muck. It wasn't enough to catch him down, but maybe it could slow down a charge. "Its certainly an idea," Veru mused, mentally estimating the size of the trail they'd been following. "Slow him down. These things are big. I have no doubt if we can bring him to the ground, he won't rise again."

Unfortunately, the elephant had changed directions. Either following the creature who had made the smaller tracks, or being pursued by it.

"Its hard to tell here who is the hunter and who is the hunted," the white lion sighed.

"Well, whatever it is...its in trouble. It can't possibly take on that elephant by its own, not if its feet are smaller than mine." The lioness held up her paws for comparison. They were on the large side, as far as lionesses went, but they were hardly enough to work on their own. "And if its being hunted, it might not even know its in danger."

Veru had a feeling he knew where this was going. "If we rush down this trail, we might find ourselves unprepared."

"But we might save a life," An said, hopping down from where she stood in the mud.

arrow Decision time!

Do we rush down the path, possibly saving this mystery creature?
Or do we stall to make sure we're prepared to fight?

[whoops, double post was me. I'll suspend the threat detection!]

Margulis wanted to stay put, everything in her being told her that they ought to be cautious in this scenario. But so much had carnage had already occurred and there had been nothing they could do to stop it. This, they might be able to help. They might be worse off than if they waited, but even if they waited a thousand days she wasn't sure they'd ever be ready to take on an elephant. It was time for action, there had been plenty of good strategies proposed already. "I say we go and try to help whatever it is that made these tracks," she said softly, her voice raising as she went, "We're as ready as we're likely to be, and maybe we can make some good out of this mess."

The hot pink lioness slapped a paw to her forehead. "We are wasting time." The lioness rolled her eyes, her voice strained and terse as her tail twitched agitatedly behind her. She never was one for groups. The lioness sighed, and willed herself to be calm. "...If we track the beast, send the leopards anyone who can climb to follow in the tree tops, the rest of us stay down here, we track this thing down, and we kill it." She breathed another breath, straining to keep the annoyance out of her voice. She needed to be rational, and remember that not all of them are soldiers. "I've never seen something like this go down, but if it's really an elephant, I've heard of them being taken down before...If we stall, we give this damned thing more time to find us before we find it. Even if whatever this little thing is is really is hunting the same thing with us, if it's against us, even if it's completely oblivious, don't we stand the best chance in saving its tiny little tail by going after this thing?"

"We should help them," Ndege said without hesitating. "There's been enough death in this forest. But the pink lioness has a point... we have leopards with us and a vulture. With their higher vantage, they may give us some advance warning. We'd be fools to ignore that advantage."

[OoC: Between schutzhund and a migraine, I have missed so muuuhc. T^T Catch up time!]

Lani stayed close to her companions, taking a moment to tip her dainty feet in the water and wash the red paint away. She’d get muddy now, but there was nothing for that. A bit f muck on her fur would help disguise her bright coat in the underbush. She wasn’t going to blend in with anything as she wall, and bright oranges and blues. She wanted nothing more than to keep close and keep safe.

The prospect of fighting an elephant was more than Lani could ever comprehend. She didn’t want this all to lead to conflict and more death than there already was.

Ndege spoke before Lani could voice her opinion, and although she was frightened of the prospect, she agreed.

“If we have the opportunity to save the tiny foot creature, we should take it,” she lifted her head and gave a determined nod, trying to appear confident,” If it’s murdered because we didn’t help it, its blood will be on our paws.” Lani couldn’t live with that.

Hel snorted, but inside his stomach churned with fear. Were they really considering this? It was practically suicide to go after an elephant anyway, but without a plan?

"Look, I don't mean to be crude, but is that little guy's," he waved a paw at the prints, "hide worth more than your own? We all've heard the stories about this place before we came here. They should have known better, right?" He got up, pacing nervously. He couldn't stay behind, because then he'd be just as big a target as the unfortunate creature that had come before them. But it was tempting.

He tried to appeal to reason. "Rushing in headfirst is just going to make things even messier, maybe get some of us killed. 'Sides, for all we know, it could be dead already."

He definitely wasn't refering to the elephant.

"No-one should be left to face that kind of danger on their own." Baatar interjected firmly. "We are lucky enough to be in a position where we are not alone and we have each other. We would stand no chance if we weren't in this group. And the stranger might not have the same understanding as we do, they might not realize exactly what they're getting themselves into." He looked up the path and took a deep breath. He always had a need to help people, but this one was rising in his stomach. He couldn't race after the stranger on his own, they were working well in the group and needed the security. "We are as prepared as we can be at this moment I believe, We should go and help them."

Shari wasn't interested in saving the life of whichever was being hunted in this situation. If the little creature that had made these tracks was stupid enough to go after the elephant then it deserved it. "I agree with him. If we rush into it our lives could be in danger and if something that small that made those tracks was dumb enough to trail the elephant then it will be that animals fault when he/she dies at the elephants tusks."

"We can't risk the lives of many for the life of one." Endesha agreed. It really was as simple as that. Hopefully the owner of those little paw prints would steer well clear of the raging elephant. And if it didn't? Well, that was its own fault. There was only so much that they could do. Saving fools was not it.

Her response, however, had clearly taken Jemadari by surprise. "Endesha!" he blurted, folding back his ears. "You can't be serious."

"I am." She replied. Life was not all flowery and beautiful. She'd learnt that the hard way.

"Well I vote to rescue the creature." Jemadari replied, scowling st Endesha as if she were a stranger.

It seemed most were of the opinion that they should rush to help whatever creature had left the tracks and that left Pam feeling terribly conflicted. Taking on a massive threat without a proper strategy felt reckless and just downright stupid. It could even lead to the death of some of the lions present in favor of a life that... well, was not "lion".

Now, leading the beast to muddy ground and then attacking from behind and above... that sounded like a good plan. Pam was not heartless but he didn't like to think they might trade one life for another.

"I don't like the idea of rushing in." In truth, what he really wanted was a proper level-headed leader with undisputed authority that everyone could follow, no matter what decision he or she made. Too many opinions floating around could lead to their deaths. "Can't anyone make out what kind of creature we're talking about?" He wasn't the best tracker but even someone as inexperienced as Pam could tell apart some feline tracks. He was suddenly struck by a sudden fear and his eyes widened. "Can anyone tell if the creature is a small adult or if the tracks were made by a cub?" Well, a cub of any species would be the only reason he'd be alright with rushing in to a rescue.
