Though her first and second attempts had been less than impressive, they were actually well below par in her opinion, the child gave her teacher a happy nod as he instructed her further. All it took was a small reminder that she had not been raised around shinobi and that this was also her first day to put her back into the appropriate spirits. The gentle smile never actually left the young girl’s face as she learned and practice; this was what she had chosen to do with her life, after all. How wonderful would it be for her to be able to come home from a single day at the Academy, take a throwing star out back, and show her father that she could hit the target? Just the thought practically elated the child, though she made no physical signs that she had. If only to make her father proud and prove that she could be a shinobi, Amaya would perfect this exercise.

With an order to try the shuriken, though it was more a suggestion than an order, Amaya removed the weapon from her pouch; glancing over the sharpened metal. The girl had remembered going out behind the shop with her father and an older man one day when he came to retrieve a custom weapon. It was a six pronged throwing star, since he had only seen ones with four blades. Sure, it wasn’t original but the man passed the background checks and paid when he was supposed to, so the family wasn’t going to outwardly judge him. Amaya remembered the odd curve of the flying pattern and how he had both held and tossed the shuriken. It hadn’t been long after the child had convinced her parents to allow her to enroll in the Academy, so she was drinking in every last bit that she could; much like she was still doing. While it may not work with a four bladed shuriken like it had the six bladed, it was the only example that Amaya had to work with and it seemed logical enough to her.

For once in her life, Amaya was glad that her fingers were slightly long for her size. Gripping the shuriken was far easier than it had been gripping the kunai; then again, the kunai wasn’t designed to be thrown with the shuriken had been designed for such a use. The thin design would allow it to cut through the air with far less resistant and the circular shape was far more conducive to throwing because it would happily spin with the ending flick of the wrist. Focusing in on her target and feeling more comfortable with the weapon in her hand, the girl gave the shuriken a sharp toss; though she was nervous about how the curvature would affect its hitting point. However, much to her surprise, there was a loud wooden “thunk” as the shuriken sank deep into the dummy’s heart. Unlike the kunai knives before, this weapon wasn’t at risk of falling out of the dummy; she had lodged it nice and deep.

Though she was proud of her small accomplishment, since she was taking every success with the smallest grain of salt, Amaya kept her excitement pushed inside of her so that she could burst when she got home instead of in front of her teachers and her peers. No, instead she just looked over at Akeru with the happiest little smile on her face. Each little triumph was slowly tacking onto her commitment and her absolutism about becoming a shinobi. While it may not have been her calling from birth, this was the right path for her to take.

Just because water conforms does not mean it is any lesser an element.

There was a soft clap, a singular sound that stood apart from the surroundings despite its quietness, and then another. His approval, for adapting so well upon her first try.

"Well done." Congratulated Akeru. He stopped to brush back a stray lock of black hair which had been displaced by the breeze and was irritating his cheek: he tucked the strands of the sideburn neatly behind his ear.

She was far from having mastered projectile weapons, but this was indeed an excellent start. Vaguely, he thought to himself as he watched her handle the shuriken that she seemed to be rather well acquainted with weapons. Perhaps her parents were in the trade, either that or considering he does not know of any current Keijis among the presently-serving shinobi, they could also no longer be in active service in order to take care of their child.

He does not give any further advice, seeing it unnecessary, leaving his encouragement for her to continue.

Effect: +5 to Amaya's next roll

Smiling, in acknowledge of his compliment, Amaya knew that was all the praise and advice that she would get from Akeru this time around. Though young, the child knew that a person learned more from failure than success, so when she was victorious in an effort it was expected that there would be less feedback. However, the gentle claps and those two little words were enough to let the girl know that she wasn’t the only one impressed by her effort. Well, perhaps impressed wasn’t the proper wording for it, but it was all that she had off the top of her head. Maybe approving would be more accurate. After all she had failed twice with the kunai and in quite miserable fashion. Now that she had an actual throwing weapon, though, it was easier to propel it accurately across the training yard. How great it would have been if her father had been there to see that. This single accomplishment would have proven to him that she was meant to be a shinobi and that she had made the right decision in choosing to come to the Academy. That was alright though. She would simply have to show him one day during a lull at work because she knew her graduating wouldn’t be enough to convince her father of that. Though he was a kind and loving man, once he got an idea into his head he held onto it for dear life and refused to let go at any cost. It was actually entirely possible that she would never convince him no matter how far she climbed in the shinobi world.

While that was a difficult reality to face, Amaya knew that she was where she wanted to be and she was happy with it. In the short half day that she had been at the Academy she had already met two wonderful people and had learned more than she ever had at a day at the forge. Such a quick and ever changing environment was what she craved and what she wanted to build her life around.

Her mind travelled a hundred miles an hour, but she quickly pulled herself into focus as she looked back at her target. Unfortunately, odds stated that her first success, especially with how spectacular a success it was, was most likely a case of beginner’s luck. However, the motion had felt right to the child and she was feeling far more comfortable with the shuriken, so she would keep using the same technique she had until she pinpointed something that needed to be fixed or adjusted. Removing the next throwing star from her pouch, Amaya used the same comfortable grip before letting the weapon fly through the air once again. This time the arcing path was higher than her last attempt, which meant something was different about the way she had thrown it. None the less, the shuriken embedded itself into the face of the dummy, lodging deep in the wood. Another success and the child still couldn’t fight off her smile; not that she had been trying to be. Once again, she checked over with Akeru to see if he had anything to add or to change before she tried again.

Next lesson!? Yae frowned, filled to the brim with disappointment. By the time she managed to complain Ko-sensei had already left the room.
"The schedule says lunch is next!"

Yae wore a look of glum despair as the class followed their instructor to the second floor. The last thing she wanted to do was work more before eating. Being hungry had a tendency to negatively affect one's ability to perform, after all. After Ko-sensei had explained the lesson she took a seat by the box labeled "Yae." She was tempted to open the box and start eating. What would he do, besides ask her to stop? But before she could act he was already tying the knots around her arms, binding her in place. The tape seemed a bit superfluous. What was the point of keeping them from talking? She turned her arms in the binds the little way she could, testing their strength. There was no way she could cheat and get out physically.

The idea of using chakra to undo the knots suddenly seemed impossible. Yae gave up for the moment and looked around the room. On the floor nearby was Sakura-san. She had been there when the rest of the students had arrived. It looked like she had managed to get most of the knots out; Yae couldn't see exactly how many were left. Fudou seemed to be having as much difficulty as she was. The white haired boy on the other hand seemed to be making progress quite quickly. Ko-sensei had mentioned that Amaya girl, but she was nowhere in sight. Had she already finished? Yae extended her chakra from her hands, along the length of rope, but wasn't accomplishing anything as far as she could tell.

~Resting post~

With all her chakra depleted, she watched the others as the got settled into their places and worked with the ropes. With Inechi though, he just sped through everything as if there weren't a rope binding him in the first place. Amazed, she watched as he just loosened everything without faltering even once. Apparently he had done this before, or else it wouldn't have been possible for this to happen. She heard Yae complain about the schedule and was distracted, but she turned back and was able to hear Inechi's words of encouragement. Gladdened, she nodded to him in thanks. Now with only one last one left, she knew that she was low on chakra, but wondered if she should try her luck and use the little chakra she had just regained while resting. 'Well, why not? The faster I get this over with, the better.' she thought.

Yae hadn't managed to get even one knot untied yet. She wasn't even sure she managed to move the rope at all. Already she was becoming frustrated. In an attempt to monitor the rope she turned her head, but only managed to get a fraction of it's total length in the periphery of her vision. She experimented with trying to extend her chakra down the rope, "feeling" along it. After a few minutes of effort she felt it: the rough material around her arms twitched ever so slightly. She had managed some small degree of progress, though untying a knot this way still seemed pretty impossible. Shifting in her seat, she tried to move her arms further into her view, but the position she managed proved to be too uncomfortable to hold.

Extending her chakra, Yae tugged at one of the knots. She felt it tug a little, but then she lost her grip. The knot had slid in on itself a little, that much closer to being undone. Beneath the tape and below a furrowed brow she was grinding her teeth. That's when the boy with white hair finished. He started pigging away at his lunch. Yae watched, wide-eyed with envy. Her stomach voiced her jealousy. Desperate now she made a second attempt at the knot. As with her last, she managed to move the knot just barely before losing her grip on it. Annoyed, she muttered an obscenity that was muffled by the tape around her mouth.

It was too painful to watch someone eat while being this hungry. Yae closed her eyes. As her chakra moved around the knot she started to notice something. Her chakra reacted to the presence of the rope. It's response to the material sent a sort of shockwave back to her, allowing her to map the shape in her head. It was like how a bat's sonar, except much less trained and much less effective. Using this new discovery she studied every detail of the first knot, creating a semi-accurate model in her head. Once she was sure her mental image was accurate enough she pulled at it. This time the knot gave way. She would have smiled, but the tape kept her mouth in a permanent line of seriousness.

Now for the second knot. Yae sent her chakra down the rope. The new knot wasn't much farther down the rope, but the strength of her chakra seemed to diminish considerably in that short amount of travel. The fainter signal she received back made mapping it out even harder. She closed her eyes tight, not wanting any ocular interference with her map. She tried to pull at the knot, but ended up losing her image. Upset, she sighed loudly through her nose, trying to keep calm in the face of complete failure. Once she had gotten over it, she began slowly mapping the knot out once again, wasting more of her valuable chakra.

6 + 2 + 1 = 9 Fail (WHAT?!)
Inechi

With heightened hopes that she would soon be out of here, she tested the ropes and sent a little bit of chakra into it to get a feel for how the ropes were situated. However, it seemed this last one was going to play hard to get. It was awful to even imagine, especially with all the tangled up ropes that were in the way. Silently shifting the ropes away the best she could, Sakura tried the knot, but it was too tightly bound up, that no matter how hard she tried, it was impossible to loosen without getting a cramp in her fingers. Her hands were starting to feel a little numb, and Sakura dearly wanted to get the tape off her mouth. Glancing at the others, she made a mental note to give them a word of advice for the technique, because she knew how the tiniest bit of information could really help.

Berating herself for being a little too hasty in trying to end the lesson, she sighed as well as she could and looked around, feeling hot because of the body heat from the other people. She would have to open the other windows for everyone else once she got free of her own, she thought.

The second knot was more complicated than the first; she could see that now. Yae realized her mental image would have to be much more precise than her first attempt if she to successfully undo it. Her energy spiraled around the clump of rope, circling each twist of the entwined structure. She was starting to get a good idea of what it looked like. This left her with a second problem: what was the best way to attack this knot. It wasn't even in the same style as the last one, and she couldn't just leisurely tug away at it to look for a weakness. With the intense concentration of mantis she studied the rope, hoping to find some kind of weakness.

~Resting post~

Impatient to start again, she looked around to see Yae struggling with the ropes. It seemed to her that there was a little problem with her knots, and Sakura truely felt for her. Running around the tracks, then being tied up in front of your bento was not the best of ways to spend your morning and afternoon. Speaking of which, she would need to tell Yae to come looking for her later so they could eat together again.

Now with her chakra returned, even if it was a small amount, she needed to figure out what she should do. Try the ropes again, or rest? 'It would be faster if she just tried it as soon as I could, especially considering that I can rest up later,' Sakura thought as she decided to try it again as soon as she could.

17 + 2 = 19 Pass [Lesson Complete]

Hoping this would be her last, she sent the chakra in again, mapping the rope before testing it. Her last try, although it hadn't completely untied it, had loosened the knot a bit, and Sakura used that small gap that she had made and tugged as hard as she could. Viciously gaining more momentum, she kept on pulling the rope through until she was finally free of the ropes.

'Free at last,' Sakura thought, smiling. Standing up and dusting off her dress and gloves, she shook her head and let the hair fall back down naturally. Stretching and moving her arms and wrists, she pulled up a chair and sat on it, while pulling off the tape that was on her mouth the whole time. Grimacing, she tugged the offending piece of tape on her mouth and wrapped it up, while standing back up and tidying up the ropes into a neat coil for future use, although preferably not on her.

It suddenly dawned on Yae just how tired she was. Using up all that chakra had taken quite a toll on her. She went slack in her seat, keeping her eyes closed in an effort to maintain her knowledge of the second knot. As long as she focused on it she could remember, even if she wasn't currently mapping the thing with her chakra. This training was proving to be just as hard as the running, but Yae wasn't becoming as frustrated. The way she looked at this training was that it was way more relevant. It involved cleverly controlling one's chakra rather than clumsy physical movement, which led her to wonder why she was having so much difficulty.
