Nakura had listened to Faleen's words, but he hadn't looked at her for long when she had said them. He had never trusted anyone other than himself - at least he hadn't in the past, but as of late he hadn't really felt like...him. The grunt wondered when he had allowing others to start seeping in through his impenetrable wall of apathy and indifference.

While he had a certain respect for Faleen's opinion, he couldn't help but feel that her confidence in her fellow teammates was misplaced. They probably had no care for the other Rockets' safety - only that whatever trouble they brought with them didn't make it back to base and condemn them all. What kind of team was that?

And yet, Nakura also felt guilty having endangered them all; so guilty that he didn't even have the heart to tell Faleen that he thought he'd known what the source of the frequency had been. And he didn't even look at Asch again. The idea of the cards having transmitters hadn't even occurred to them until the unauthorized frequency had been mentioned. He had willingly asked for the card.

Even if he'd known about the transmitters, he would have asked for one anyway, but the fact was he hadn't even considered that they would have been part of a trap. It all made sense now, though. Perhaps he really was losing his edge. His wits were being clouded by his emotions. Why was this happening...?!

But Faleen was blaming herself too. Pointlessly. He heard her as she stepped outside to check the vehicle. Maybe he wasn't the only one who was letting his emotions get to him and beating himself up over it. Still, he didn't bother stopping her; no doubt the mere act of examining the vehicle would put her mind at ease a little until the others came.

Watching as the batons were swept toward them, Nakura raised a brow as the pieces in his hand seemed to set off the equipment as much as Faleen's whole card. Ignoring the look from the agent, the grunt listened as the others spoke of micro-transmitters.

Maybe there were even numerous transmitters embedded in the paper itself, making each torn piece its own 'source'. Nakura wouldn't know; he didn't specialize in tech. Faleen was getting awfully excited for such a serious Rocket...but then again, this did have to do with her department and her passion. She had already answered the question asked of them, so the grunt didn't see any reason to speak.

However, the combination of excitement and being in a formal evening dress made his partner look almost... unrecognizable to the informant. Her excitement didn't seem to be of the positive kind, but it was unmistakably excitement nonetheless.

Nakura had heard enough. Faleen would get the information she needed, but that was not his primary concern right now. They were already wasting time as sitting ducks. Even if they hadn't yet reached HQ, they were all still in the desert and dangerously close to each other. A smart person could pinpoint the location of their headquarters in weeks - no, maybe even days.

That did it. The grunt held out his hand to the Agent who kept the pieces of his torn card. "Mind if I take those back?" He pointed at the baton. "And that too. I need to check something."

[Kratos]

The man nodded. "Sharra, get Intelligence to look this guy up," he called to one of the accompanying agents. "W-e-i-d-m-a-n." A woman by the car flipped off a salute that had nothing to do with rank and started tapping at her Rocketdex. The Agent shut the card in the case and passed the wand over Kratos once more; it was silent now, not even reacting to the card.

"You're clean. We'll get this to the tech labs-" He lifted the case for emphasis, "-see if it's got any more surprises. Need a lift?"

[Izaya, Faleen, Asch]

Ted looked over his shoulder at the team leader, who nodded. Approval gained, the kneeling Rocket stripped off his gloves and carefully ran a nail along the edge of the card, separating the paper. "Long range tracking signal," he told Faleen as he worked. "GPS." He peeled the layers apart, exposing a complex network of threadlike wires that traced the card's interior in a circuit. "Just takes a couple circuits, thin film RF amp.." He named the parts as they were exposed, and then his brows raised. "..carbon fiber battery, that's your power source. Slick."

Izaya's request for card and baton got a slow brow raise from Ted and a perturbed look from the agent who'd stayed nearest the car. "Son," he spoke up, "are you deaf or stupid? What part of 'stand by' do you-"

The 'dex of each of the detained crackled to life yet again, cutting the man off. "Apparently all of it, Agent," spoke the clipped voice of a woman. "Grunt Nakura, this is Elite Agent Harvard. You are to follow the orders of the deployed Security team. Your request for acess to restricted department technology and evidence is hereby denied."

The agent by the car shrugged as if to say 'welp.'

Asch glanced in Izaya's direction with a scowl as he started making requests. Just who did that guy think he was? He was just a grunt after all. And what made him think he was that much smarter and competent then the security department? Honestly.

A smug look came on the red head's face as Izaya was promptly denied. He got a certain amount of satisfaction from that. Asch enjoyed it when that idiot was thwarted or humiliated. Preferably both at the same time.

The grunt was not at all impressed with the display of tech. His impatience was starting to show through as he crossed his arms over his chest. And then Ted answered his question.

He tried to overlook the condescending address of 'son'. He ignored the fact that Faleen's questions and intelligence were all being acknowledged while his were just being denied. The grunt forced himself to smile wider. Oh, but I am standing, Otou-san. By you, in fact. Maybe he wouldn't misbehave or act out, but if he had to keep his mouth shut any longer, the grunt thought he would blow a fuse.

When he finally was allowed to speak, however, the words that came out of his mouth weren't the ones he'd hoped to express. "Yes, Elite Agent," he replied firmly, careful to keep any sort of sigh, anger, or other hints of emotion out of his tone. "Please pardon my impudence."

The grunt went to go stand silently by the van, sticking his hands in his pocket for warmth as he played with the pokeballs inside.

(Marv' And The NPCs is the name of the band he should start up)
"Y're fracking kidding..." Tambrey's eyes widened, staring at the card as it caused the baton to whine. "That's... kind o' neat... Uh. Not because of the whole 'trying t' find the place' thing, but... 's so small!"
Technology wasn't something she understood half as well as biology or genetics, but she understood enough to know that putting a transmitter in a business card was a pretty impressive feat, whatever the objective might have been.
"Uh. Some grumpy guy was giving them out; 'Weirdman' 'r somethin' like that. 'S name's on the card. Apparently 's phone number is too, but we probably shouldn't ring that." She was frowning at the card again. "Some League official. Made a very short speech."

[NPCs]

Glancing at the patiently-waiting Yuan, Kratos took in the bird pokémon's appearance, noticing that his eyes were starting to droop and that he kept almost tucking his head under a wing. Recalling the half-asleep bird pokémon, he nodded.

"I would appreciate it, sir," he said simply. Trying to fly a pidgeot that was starting to fall asleep was asking for a painful crash landing and a waste of resources used in retrieval and medical treatment. Yuan was a well-trained pokémon, but he had his limits and his trainer knew them well. Had they not been stopped, they would have been okay to make it back to base, but the short time of waiting in the dark had been a most effective sedative for the flying type.

In fact, it had managed to affect Kratos a little too, so the thought of a lift back was a welcome one. Parties wore him out anyway, and one with the added inconveniences that this one had dealt was nearly exhausting to the introverted redhead. It was enough to make him actually feel like he could sleep, and as Kratos was a pronounced insomniac, that was rather telling of just how stressful this evening had been.

He was ready to head back.

[Kratos]

Having done everything they could do at their current location, the security detail filed back to the car. The agent talking to Kratos held the door to the back seats open for him. "It'll be cramped, but hop in."

Once all the Rockets were seated the car swung around and sped off for the base.

[Tambrey]

"It's something, all right," Marv agreed, in the tired tones of someone whose enemy has just discovered a new trick. "Who knows how it's powered; that's a hell of a thin battery."

"Going to take it back, Marv?" the agent carrying the case called. Marv shook his head.

"Labs already got one; don't need all this guy's signals going dead. Keep it moving." The other agent nodded and stowed the case back in the car before stepping forward to take the card. She released a Pidgeot, who muttered disapprovingly at the car's bright headlights before taking the card delicately in its beak.

"I'll drop it in Jinko."

"Good deal."

As the Pidgeot rider took to the skies, the remaining agents headed back to the car. Marv looked over his shoulder at Tambrey before getting in. "Enjoy the rest of your night."

[Izaya, Faleen, Asch]

If Harvard had heard Izaya's response, she gave no reply. His 'dex was silent.

Another agent leaned over Ted's shoulder. "That still transmitting?" Ted let the pieces sprinkle into the case and snapped it shut. "Doubt it." "Damn. That'll look suspicious." The agent plucked the remaining card from Ted's fingers. "I'll take this one to Sandalwood."

As Ted snapped the case shut and returned to the still-running car, the unnamed agent nodded to Faleen, Asch and Izaya. "Head on back to base."

----------

In a hotel room in Camphoreon, a short man was watching a screen.

He was sitting cross-legged on the bed, studying the display on his laptop with an air of relaxed interest. The map of Kodo it displayed was familiar to anyone who'd searched for driving directions online, but rather than a route it was overlaid by a set of points - twenty, all told, or rather nineteen. He'd been monitoring them for the past hour. Most were stationary by this point, clustered within Camphoreon and its outlying suburbs, but some had diverged and were heading for Sagestone. There were a pair skirting north though, around the mountains. And this might not have been remarkable were it not for the one that had beelined that way twenty minutes earlier, following a path marked by no paved road.

The dots stopped at the edge of the desert. One of them winked out; the other moved on.

Weidman tilted his head and kept watching.

A few minutes later another dot heading north paused in about the same place, then kept going down the road to Jinko.

Looking pleased, Weidman reached for his PDA. As he picked the device up, a new message flashed on the screen.

desert

The little man smiled at it.

"Heh. You're ahead of me."
