"You are talking about the Αίμα των βακκίνιων," he replied, his Greek accent flawless. "We have several bottles. Scarlet recently developed a taste for the stuff, though why you would pollute blood like that escapes me. Obviously it is your influence upon her. I'll send for one--do you want it in your chambers or would you prefer to have it in the parlor?"

Val's face lit up. "oh, lovely! I'll have to remember that name."

he wiggled his excitement, then spoke again, "the parlor would be nice. I've been cooped up all afternoon."

"As opposed to being out and about, getting fresh air and vitamin D?" Devonte replied, his voice heavy with irony. "I'll have it sent there right away." He caught the eye of one of the servants. The servant nodded and disappeared behind a tapestry, taking the secret ways to the cellars for the select vintage. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a ball to prepare."

"This is quite the experience," Ciro smiled, as Scarlet ans he started off again.

-------------------------------------

Alfons and Dmitri were making their way down to the ballroom when they encountered Brittania.
"Chyort," Dmitri muttered, instinctively reaching for his weapon. Something about her presence made him uneasy.
Alfons simply turned his head slightly, and motioned his hand towards Dmitri.
"Easy. We don't want to cause any trouble, Verstehen Sie?"
"Ponjatyj."

Scarlet smiled and led Ciro, racing across the countryside until they came to a stoic but modern mansion. It was obvious that the staff of the house were settling down for the evening.

"Lord Faltnir lives here. No spouse, no betrothed, only the occasional mistress. I was one of those last year," she smiled at the memory. "He's terribly lonely, but refuses to trust anyone. If he dies without an heir, his ogre of a nephew gets the title and the estate. So, I'm here to give him his first child." She lifted the basket with a twinkle in her eye. "Valthier calls it meddling, my brother calls it foolery."

"I call it establishing potential allies," Ciro added, half-smiling. "Shall we head in?" He motioned towards the door.

*Dmitri fails to relax completely*

((...Train of thought just derailed...))

"Actually, this letter makes it so I can't make my presence or identity known to them for at least two decades," she replied, pulling a letter from a pocket in her drab dress. "The gist of it is that because we slept together, I conceived this child, and now I am unable to care for it, so he needs to be the father he's destined to be or this poor little angel will surely die. I've pulled this kind of stunt many times before. I get tears in their eyes four out of five times. But if Lord Faltnir knew who and what I was, and that this baby really was a peasant orphan, he would reject the child and probably hate me."

Brittania smiled coldly at the man, "Mm, yes, draw your gun. Fire at me, that would be most convenient. Well, for me at least. You would find it rather bad for your existence." The vampiric dragon laughed, her mouth of fangs exposed as she slid around behind the two and slipped between them, whispering to both of them, "Oh ja, ich verstehe diese sprache sehr gut." The cruel undead giggled coldly as she smiled direly. "And old bones said this would be interesting, I guess even he can be right once in a long while."

"Oh. Strike the 'heading in' bit. The rest I still stand by." Ciro paused, not quite sure what to say next. "Now what?"

--------------------------

The look on Dmitri's face was priceless, the very definition of the "oh s**t" moment. Alfons, on the other-hand, was calm and collected. "I presume 'Old Bones' is the one Scarlet mentioned," he thought.
"What in vorld have I gotten myself into," Dmitri pondered.
"Allow me to introduce myself and my friend here," Alfons spoke, "I am Alfons Goldschmidt III, and the man with the odd face is Dmitri Zolnerovich." This somewhat-of-an-insult snapped Dmitri out of his stunned expression.
"Ei! I do not!"
"Your mouth was agape, so you did."

Brittania laughed lightly, "Hello Alfons and Dmitri. A pleasure to meet you both, you may refer to me as Brittania. As for Old Bones, you'll know him as Markius." The vampiric dragon smiled coldy to the two, "So what brings you two here?"

"Now...we hope for the best." Scarlet ran at normal human speed, the basket clutched to her chest. Furtivly looking around, she set the basket on the doorstep of the servant's entrance. Then she pounded on the door. She waited until she heard shuffling feet just on the other side before running back into the cover of the bushes to hunker down beside Ciro and watch.

An old cook opened the door, rolling pin in one hand. She looked around, saw no one, and then looked down and SCREAMED! She dropped the rolling pin and scooped up the baby from the basket. Then she found the letter addressed to the lord of the manor and, clumsily crossing herself with the baby in her arms, rushed inside. It was difficult to see the action after that, since it could only be glimpsed through the windows. Finally, Scarlet caught sight of her old flame in a high window and she pointed it out to Ciro.

Lord Faltnir was cradling the baby in his arms, stiffness in his shoulders belying his inexperience with children. But after a few moments, he seemed to relax and Scarlet was gratified to see a small smile ghosting at the corners of his mouth, his eyes sparkling.

"Another lonely man with another child who is not mine and will never be mine," she sighed softly, wistfully. Then she shook herself. "Time to get back, my love. We have guests to entertain, an emperor to appiese, and early tomorrow morning, we will be flying to Japan."

She took his hand and raced back to her castle, fast enough to dry any emotional moisture in her eyes before anyone could accuse her of crying.

"How touching..." Ciro thought. "Japan, eh? Sounds fun."

----------------------

"Business." Alfons replied.
"Zis mudak." Dmitri complained.
Alfons shook his head a Dmitri. "Must you always insult me?"
"Da."
Alfons sighed. "Shall we all go to the ballroom?"

the reason Valthier had so loved the drink he now enjoyed half a full bottle of, was because the Blood not only interacted with it tastefully, but also because of the way it allowed him to experience the pleasure he used to in life. the Blood coursed through his veins, and took the alchahol with it. no other way for the undead to drown their brain-cells.

he chuckled to himself, listening to music, and fiddling around in the armchair. he quickly found himself getting maddenly bored now, so he figured it was time to join the event. hopefully there would be at least someone there by now.

he got up and half-danced the whole way to the ballroom, mumbling a song as he did.

Scarlet swept into the back door of the kitchen with Ciro right behind her. Barely slowing down, she raced upstairs to her chambers.

"Time to get dressed for the party, darling," she told Ciro with a coy smile. "Go explore your wardrobe--I think you might find more than a few things to your liking there. And don't forget to open the box on your dresser. There are quite a few elegant pieces of masculine jewelry there, and I love it when a man accessorizes." She winked.

She quickly shucked her simple peasant's gown without a glimmer of modesty and threw it over the chair in front of her vanity dresser. Then she went to the top drawer of an antique boudoir and pulled out another set of undergarments. This time she selected ivory lace panties and strapless demi-bra with matching garter belt. Then she found off-white fishnets and slipped them over her long legs to expertly fasten them to the garters.

She threw open the doors and started pawing through her gowns, looking for something suitable. Finally she picked out a strapless emerald green dress, mermaid cut, that hugged her curves and flared out at the knees. Instead of ruffles, the bottom flare consisted of hundreds of green and gold peacock feathers. She selected a strand of green pearls from her jewelry box along with matching chandelier earrings. Then she donned long, fingerless and palm-less gloves made of the same green satin as the dress, only a loop around her middle finger keeping the satin flush with the back of her hand, making a neat green point. She added a golden pearl ring on each middle finger as an accent. She then pulled out a pair of sling-back stilettos that might have been 24 carat gold for the way they glittered, and slipped into them daintily.

Shaking her head of short, bone-white hair, she assessed her appearance in the full-length mirror. She passed a hand over her dead womb with a flicker of regret in her face. Still, she looked pretty good for a corpse.
