It was a movie first, I think.
And yes the spelling is horrible.
Considering the main character's name (Or one of) was Liu, I think they tried to keep it simple.

Liu is a legitimate asian name actually so you can't really hit them on spelling besides the main title, which is probably done on purpose for a reason.

Yup, and no I'm sure it was a game first (Sub Zero, and Noob Sabot Rocks)...the first MK movie was good the second one was lame

I know Liu is an asian name, I'm just saying they kept it short to deter bad spelling. : P
