Ian clapped his hands together - or at least, as well as he could while still holding his bow.

"Maybe we can be in the same classes!" he beamed, eyes sparkling brightly. "I bet Grandma would let us! And we could learn the same things and work on projects and stuff together - and you could stay with us because Gaunt lives too far away ---"

That sort of comment really stung Gaunt, and it showed plainly in his facial expressions. But, it was something that was difficult to deny. The school and his school were just too far away. It was a long walk to the portal from the dorm, and who knew how much further it would be from the portal to the schoolhouse. So when Prince exclaimed that setup would be wonderful, to work on school as well as live with Ian, Gaunt just held his tongue, though his face showed sadness.

As Ian kept chattering away to Prince, Serenity's eyes were on Gaunt. She could see his sadness, and she couldn't blame him. If Ian were talking about moving away from her, she would feel the same.

She squeezed Gaunt's hand tightly, interlacing her fingers with his and walking closer to him, trying to bring him what comfort she could.

"What do you say?" she asked him softly. She could see what he was thinking ... but as much as she wished she could comfort him with words, she knew that Prince living with her and Ian probably was the best course, if he was going to be going to school. At least he wouldn't have to live in the dorms - in that case, he wouldn't even be able to visit, whereas Serenity could make sure they all got together at least a few times a week.

Gaunt softly squeezed Serenity's hand as he felt her move closer in a silent attempt to comfort and support him. He slowly takes a breath and he nods slowly. "I don't like feeling like I'm abandoning my new son.. but.. I think it's for the best, to live where he can go to school and be educated.. and live with friends.. and be able to make new ones."

Serenity set Ian on the ground so that he could walk on his own and chat with Prince, and so that she would be free to comfort Gaunt more easily. She hugged him tightly, both arms around his shoulders.

"You're not abandoning him," she said softly. "You're giving him what he needs - education, freedom from the rules and confine of your school ... and it's only for a while, and then we'll all be together. As soon as you're finished school and graduated, we'll all be together."

He nods and he softly strokes her fingers with his own as they held hands. He sighs quietly and he nods. "Yeah. As soon as I graduate. And I know this is best for him. And Prince seems to be happy about it. It's kinda that sort of thing that makes me feel like I'm not very important. And my relationship with Prince just started, really. I'm also fighting the feeling that I need to be nurturing it, not passing him off to someone else for a few months. So you understand why I'm having some misgivings, even though I know it's what Prince really needs? And I'll do it anyway, send him with Ian to school because of that."

Serenity nodded and laid her head against his shoulder. "Just remember," she murmured, "that it can't be easy for Prince to live away from you, either. Like you, he will do it, and if he is with Ian I'm sure he will enjoy it ... but he will always miss you. You are his father, after all. You were there to introduce him into the world, who taught him life's lessons ... and it will be his first time without you. I am certain he will miss you very much."

She squeezed his hand again. "And even if your relationship with him seems to you to have just started ... remember, his relationship with you has been his whole life."

He nods and he smiles softly a bit. "Yeah. I know that his entire life has been a relationship with me. But to me, its just been a couple weeks. To me, this relationship is still in its infantile stages. So it's difficult for me to let it go because of that." He slowly takes a breath, softly squeezing her hand. "Yeah. I'm sure he will miss me. But he also likes you and Ian so much. I'm not certain he'll be lonely because he loves the both of you. Not that I want him to be lonely. But I guess it's an ego boost to know that someone does feel lonely when I'm not around. It makes me feel important, needed."

Serenity squeezed his hand back again.

"Prince isn't the only one who's lonely without you," she told him quietly. "If it were possible, or logical, then I would be more than happy to marry you today, tonight ... any time. But ... you have to finish your schooling first."

She would still be spending every possible moment with him ... but she would not allow herself to distract him from his studies. He needed to study ... needed to graduate.

He nods and he smiles softly, kissing her knuckle softly as he continued to hold her hand. "Mmmm. I wish I could marry you right now.. that we could just run away and live our loves together, happily together for the rest of my life." He smiles warmly at her, his eyes shimmering slightly in the sunlight as he gazes at her.

Serenity felt herself melting under Gaunt's warm gaze, but as much as she wished for the same, she knew it simply was not practical.

"I would like that too," she murmured softly, "but if you don't finish school, now when you're so close to it, you're going to regret it for the rest of your life. I can't have that on my conscience."

As they drew near the hidden portal, she stopped walking, not sure whether she was ready yet to return to their own world, wanting to spend more time with Gaunt.

Ian looked around. "Hey Mom, where are we?" he asked in confusion. "This where we gotta go home?"

He blinks when Serenity stops and he tilts his head a little bit. "Yeah, I understand. I'm going to work hard to guarantee that I can graduate on time." He glanced around slowly, then back to Serenity. "Is there a problem?"

Serenity shook her head, blushing faintly. "Nothing," she said softly. She leaned over and kissed Gaunt's cheek lightly, then let go of his hand. "Come on, let's get back."

She reached into the air and made a few motions, and suddenly the portal appeared, a hole in the air just the right size for them to walk through.

Ian's eyes grew wide. "Whoa," he breathed. "That's so cool!"

He grinned at Prince and tugged on his boot. "Come on, Prince! Let's go home and see my Grandma and Grandpa!"

Gaunt blinks and he nods slowly. He knew it was something, and he didn't know if it was important or not, but he also knew - from experience - that pulling information from women could be as hard as pulling your own teeth. So he just smiles and follows, drawing Prince and Ian along with them, as they step through the portal and into another world.

The portal room was exactly as they had left it, and a glance at the clock showed that only about half an hour had passed since they had left.

"Come," Serenity smiled at Gaunt, picking up Ian and carrying him again. "Mama and Papa should be finished their dinner by now, I think. They usually eat early because of the twins."

Of course, it only felt like mid morning to her ... but she was used to that, after so many trips through the portal.

She motioned towards the only real door in the room. "This way," she smiled, starting in that direction.
