Rosie's smile grew as Black Cat picked her up to take off. She tried to hunch up a bit to make sure that her necklaces and such wouldn't fall off on the way.

Black Cat finally found an apartment to her liking, a penthouse whose residents were nowhere to be found; she privately suspected that they had been out of town when the transfer occurred, as were no signs of panic. In any case, they had a little girl's room, along with a nursery, which was the main point in this instance. Within minutes, she had disabled the alarm system, and was making herself at home.

There was a knock at the door.

Black Cat glanced at it, surprised, but didn't move to answer it; no one was supposed to be home, after all. Still, years of experience and the natural sense of caution that came with her profession made her wary, so she scooped up the girl again and prepared to go back out the window. Silently, she brought a finger up to her lips, signaling for Rosie to stay quiet.

There was another knock, no louder but with more force, and the scuffling of feet. The door seemed to be calling out to them, drawing them in to answer it.

Black Cat tensed, her arm tightening around Rosie as she stared at the door with wide eyes. She did not like this, not one bit. Every instinct she had was screaming for her to get the hell out the window, but it was taking every ounce of her self-control just to remain where she was.

Rosie hadn't taken more than a few steps into the very nice home when she felt Black Cat pick her up again. She glanced at her, then back at the door. She didn't think much of it at first, but Cat's growing tension was making her feel uneasy herself. If a grown up was upset, then maybe it was something bad. Worse than getting caught? What if it was....what if that thing had found her again? Rosie gripped Cat a bit tighter and stared at the bottom of the door, watching for anything to creep under it.

Knock. Knock. Knock. The feet moved again, and the door was perhaps the most enticing thing in the world.

Unable to resist any longer, Black Cat set Rosie down, walked over to the door, unlocked it, and pulled it open.

Standing in the door was a regular-looking guy, wearing jeans and a T-shirt. He looked at Black Cat with shock, then approval as he saw what she was wearing. "Well. Hellooooo there. I uh, don't suppose the Carters are home."

Black Cat's face showed absolute surprise for a split second; whatever she had been expecting, it wasn't this. The next moment her eyebrows arched, and she smiled her slight, seductive smile. "No, as a matter of fact they aren't. Can I help you?" Despite appearances, her guard was by no means down. Something strange had pulled her to answer that door... and why was this guy behaving like the world wasn't going to hell outside? Still, she figured that it was better to play dumb.

"Well, I certainly hope so," he said with a roguish grin. "I'm lookin for a little action tonight, actually. Care to, ah, accommodate me?"

Black Cat cocked an eyebrow, then leaned forward, slipping a black-gloved finger under his chin. Oh, yes; something was definitely wrong here. "Sorry," she purred, "But you're not my type." With that, she pushed her finger forward into his throat, hard, then pulled back inside the room and shut the door with an abrupt click. She locked it immediately, sprinted across the room, grabbed Rosie, and jumped for the window.

Before she could make it to the window, however, she found herself confronted by the same man, standing in her path. "Now now," he said, smiling as he tapped his throat. "That wasn't very nice at all." He snapped his fingers, and they were surrounded by strange, demonic beings of fire. "Drop the girl and come with me," he said coldly.

Black Cat carefully lowered Rosie to the ground, her heart hammering in her chest. "Go hide, Rosie," she said smoothly, then turned her attention back to the man, her lips pursed. "Look," she said, "You're not my type. I'm sorry if that threatens your masculinity, but it's--" With a motion almost too fast to follow, her hands shot up, shooting a glob of webbing toward his eyes (It always worked for Spider-man). Without waiting to see if it landed--distraction was the point-- she dodged between the fiery beings and flipped neatly over his head. Seconds away from freedom...
