Lawrencew I feel like I can do them well in isolation, but when actually speaking, I think I have trouble differentiating between the first and fourth tones. Unless.. I'm just that good that I do it without realising xd

I don't know what it's like for a non-native speaker ... I can't speak that well but I've understood Chinese since birth. To me, I can't really isolate and identify tones in a sentence that well either, and it seems easier for learners to hear common phrases and sentences and get used to how parts of them sound like rather than remember and memorise each tone in a sentence. I dunno, it's so hard for me to think about it because I'm so used to it. xD

That IS kinda strange. Have you ever looked up the Mandarin tones before and found out which tones are which etc.? I've been exposed to Cantonese all my life, and I can easily identify which tones are which and tell you which tone is used for which word. It was actually really easy to learn. biggrin

You mean in Mandarin? I have difficulting telling when a spoken word is either 2nd tone and then third tone,or just two third tones, since they sound the same but are written differently in pinyin.
Uh, no. Unless you mean that they sound the same to you, because they are in fact all actually different.
And though I'm white as paper with minimal exposure to chinese, I can indentify the tones without much trouble, though cantonese is more of a pain than mandarin. Its just kind of a knack.

I know a lot of Mandarin speakers who can't tell you what tones are being used on the spot and such. My anecdote is especial, though, because I'm like semi-fluent in Mandarin. It's a "native language" for me yet I'm not fluent at it. So who knows? razz
@Kumiko: They're different, trust me. Sometimes they can sound similar, though, and sometimes when there are two third tones repeated, one will be a neutral or second tone as to not slow the sentence down. If it helps, have a Chinese speaker say an English one-syllable word in all the tones, and then the difference may really stand out. I did this to my friend. xD

Acctually, your incorrect. When there are 2 third tones, it is pronounced as a 2nd tone followed by a 3rd tone. They do sound different (although not greatly) when isolated or followed by different tones. However, when there is a 3rd tone followed by a 3rd tone, Kumiko-Misaki is correct; it sounds like a 2nd tone followed by a 3rd tone.

Hi everyone! I speak some Mandarin Chinese - I completed my high school Chinese studies last year (due to a strange languages program, I completed Year 12 Chinese in Year 11) and I'd like to continue studying it at uni. I'm always looking to improve though - I'm still not actually very good sweatdrop Also, how is everyone typing out the characters?
