My heart remembers, though my mind
Casts a shadow over my eyes.
A light too dim to lead away
From the darkness culled in darkness

A memory lost, a memory never wanted.
Fractured thoughts longing for each other.
Let them fade and lose my heart,
Let them join and lose my self.

Xyn had finished proofreading and rewriting the poem, though he was still unclear why he wrote such a ridiculous thing. Something in the back of his mind was telling it meant something, but...

"... don't trouble yourself." Xyn closed the journal, tucking it into the right side of his cloak.

"I'll have to show you, but first..." Xyn took his attention from Maya and focused on Shisei.

"I'll speak with this one." Xyn took a few steps closer to Shisei. It had been a long time since he dealt with someone personally. Other than Sorri and that strange young Hyuuga, he avoided confrontations, but this 'snake' interested him.

"Talking is... such a waste of energy." Xyn started to move his left hand up, brushing two of his fingers against his eyepatch. He now took a few steps closer, his tone getting lower but deeper.

"If I talk slowly, it is only because I don't wish to waste such effort." Pulling the eyepatch up, Xyn let his scarred eye closed.

"If you don't have the intelligence to know of what you speak, you should just be quiet." Xyn opened his eye, the almost purely black orb staring down on Shisei.

"Or prove yourself intelligent enough to exercise your mouth more carefully."

Amber orbs were fixated on the new comer. It was only at the last minute that Shisei heard Maya’s approaching frame, but it was too late by then. Her fist had easily gripped around the scarf. She lifted him off the ground by the material, which began to slightly choke the boy. It was only a few seconds and then the wild woman dropped him from the ascended height. Shisei fell back on his posterior only to glare up at the woman. “As expected. Just as how Orika continues to defend Karite, Maya will continue to defend this mongrel.” he thought. The glare quickly disappeared and his features became as deadpan as a doll without a mouth. The lioness turned back to the solo eye and had asked him a question. Some of those? The crow before couldn’t have that much of atrocious hand writing? On a whim the Orochi survivor decided to ask. “Maya-sempai do you not know how to read?” he questioned. As soon as the youth returned to his feet the new aggressor to Shisei’s area advanced forward, closing the space. He began to speak in a tone, much to the serpent’s displeasure, and removed his eye patch to show an obsidian pupil. One as black as space. This did not affect little snake much. While surprising, they were nothing compared to the eyes of that man. That disgusting crimson orb. The tactile mind returning to the topic at hand Shisei could not help, but make a comparison of this teen to Orika. They just were looking for a confrontation. Except this person had a major advantage, he was packing the bestial power of two lions to do his dirty work. He had taken the viper’s plan and that fact was beginning to make the boy’s venom boil. “This little piss crow. Is he trying to draw me into a confrontation? He probably understands the situation and who he has on his side. Obstructing my plans and effort. Butting in where he has no business. I can’t wait for the day he dies…”. The white face remained silent and expressionless, revealing no hint or anger, joy, fear, happiness. After a few seconds the virulent tongue decided to make itself known. “Those who find talking to be too much of an effort and can’t express themselves verbally are the ones that should be silent. If it’s such a waste of energy then go sit by the fire with the sulking farm girl. Both of you can stare at each other all day.” Shisei stated blandly and walked by Xyn, purposely bumping his shoulder. The boy then walked to Maya’s side. “If you do not know how to read, I can teach you better than anyone else here Maya-sempai.” his voice breathed in a slightly more emotional, but for the most still monotone, voice. This wasn’t the first person he learned of that couldn’t do something simple. Sly smile didn’t know how to write a letter after all. Most importantly he had to regain the lioness’s support.

Maya stiffened, turning her gaze in Shisei's general direction but not meeting the boy's eyes.

"Not very well," she answered quietly, though at the very least, she was being honest - she had no reason to hide behind any facades or talk big like Shisei and Karite were fond of doing, and on occasion, even Orika. Shifting the hides and furs over her shoulder, she spoke to Xyn softly, finding control of her own emotions and ignoring the sharp stab of shame she felt from having Shisei ask her about her literacy. "Xyn...let's go. I have work to do, and...we need to talk." Maya stood still, waiting for the Douken to come, and wondering momentarily where his raven was. She hadn't seen Munin in a while, and lost herself in thought. Shisei's last comment, though ...

"When you can work with Karite and Orika...and I mean, really work with them...then you can teach me something. But at the end of the day...you still want to hurt them. I don't have any favorites here, because none of you know what being a team is. It's something I miss a lot, and until you can appreciate it, you're..."

Maya hesitated, then shook her head.

"You're not any better than I am."

Baki bared his fangs in response to Maya's aura of insecurity around a lesser shinobi, and snarled at Shisei. He had no intention of really scaring him, just of calling attention off of Maya. Baki could recognize some of the symbols that Maya had trouble with, but he didn't know what they meant. They had something to do with the language that the human shinobi spoke, and thus they were useless to him. Baki lowered his head, golden eyes focused on Shisei's own serpentine ones, and he stared at the boy, his growls lowering in volume until Baki was silent, simply waiting for Shisei's next move.

Still the woman paid him no heed. Xyn, Xyn, Xyn. That’s all she had on her mind. It was becoming more irritating by the second. Was the feral teen girl doing this on purpose? She was becoming harder to read all because of this one person. Worst yet was when she had to bring up the other two. So what about their teamwork? Shisei had already proven he could work with them. The amount of prey they brought back was proof enough. He stole weapons for them and also thought up of an excuse that would at least take most of the blame off of them. What more did this woman want!? So what if he still had a score to settle with the farm girl and could couldn’t care any less if they got injured. The viper child had proven he could work together. Ignoring the comment of who was superior, the Orochi could not let it end so. “Maya-sempai do not be irrational. I can teach you first and then work on teamwork with those two later. Just let me…” the youth stopped his words when he felt the savage stare of the actual beast on the Tategami Grounds. For most of the time Baki had no interactions with Shisei, making the boy leave that cat as a bad memory at the back of his mind. Something he should be wary of, but not a threat. The king of beast, now made itself known, like a giant hole in a ship at sea. The jungle hunter growled at the boy, probably with the intention leaving a paw mark the size of his chest if he proceeded any further. “This is as far as I can go…” the boy thought to himself in surprise. He was locked. The child could not do any of the malicious thoughts he was conceiving towards Xyn, because Maya would protect him. He couldn’t influence Maya’s thoughts because Xyn was around and affecting her thinking. This instability in her mind was somehow being sensed by Baki, thus Shisei could not prey on an insecurity. “I can’t advance because I don’t know what she is thinking. If I push her too much, the cat will get in the way or she may take it the wrong way. If I only knew what the hell was going through her head, because of this person. Yet if I let her go right now… damn it!” with a few more seconds of thinking the Orochi came to a conclusion. “If that is what you want… Maya-sempai.” the ghost colored lad said with bow. His body then turned away and walked off in a direction away from the others. Since Karite had taken up place in the tree behind the boy’s tent he’d go behind the female tent for now. Before making it to the destination, the boy allowed one gold eye to glare at the raven robed teen. “Congratulations Xyn. You have won this battle. Whether you meant to or not, you have successfully put yourself in a position where I cannot exterminate you and you can influence Maya’s decisions. This is not over though. Stay close to Maya as much as you can and have her protect you. The moment I find a weakness in your shield I’ll destroy it. Then I’ll watch you die.” the maverick contemplated. His face, unnerved, turned back to his course and continued.

((Gah... one of my best skills and you still beat it. DARN YOU SHISEI!... I was doing that like Yume's kiss exercise so failing once ends the training. Fine then, I have another idea. I'm gonna win a challenge one way or another.))

Xyn lowered his head beneath the high collar of his shirt, his eyes narrowing slowly until they closed. To most observers, it would have seemed like a sign of defeat. However, there was a strange sound coming from within his throat, fighting in vain to reach his mouth. Was it... a laugh?

Not since Sorri...

"... interesting." Xyn had thought this snake-eyed child was nothing more than a troublesome worm, but Shisei could definitely offer him some entertainment, at the very least. His head sprang up, his expression as blank as ever, but his eyes slightly wider as he maintained his focus on Shisei.

"You are interesting." Xyn would have left it at that, but this boy insisted on pressing his will over Maya. He couldn't allow that. This Shisei had some kind of agenda; it was a little more than a suspicion, but Xyn still couldn't tell just yet. Maya was stronger than Xyn, but he had to try and protect her some how, in some way...

Not yet...

Xyn would normally have listened to Maya, but he still had business with Shisei. With his first attempt at silencing this boy's tongue failing, he couldn't let Shisei walk away still thinking he was superior. Such a dangerous thought... everyone was inferior to someone, it is the only way the world can remain balanced.

"Maya... I want to deal with him my own way." A strange confidence caused Xyn to hold himself more firmly, his muscles tensing. He barely turned to speak, simply adjusting his tone to speak more gently to her.

"Tell me, do you ever try to count the stars in the sky or the trees in a forest? It's futile. All you can do is be aware of them; there are so many that it is all you can do. When you talk, it is very similar."

Karite was taken back by Maya ordering him not to speak in his normal tongue. She was not judging Xyn who spoke the same as Shisei or himself but just the two. It seemed everyone had a right to do as they wished but him and Shisei, even though he was under her command speaking was something she couldn't control. That was the final straw from Maya. Karite really wanted to fight her, one good punch and he would die happy. Snap her back from the high horse she had mounted herself on for far to long. In that moment something rose from Karite and again the calm grounds began to whip around him as a small portion of his chakra began to seep from his pours like a sap from a tree. In a second it spiked around him blowing violently around Xyn, Maya, and Baki. The snow at the base of the tripped whipped up ad quickly scattered about like cherry blossoms in the summers calm breeze. It seemed the only way for him to summon his chakra was to be pissed at Maya. It would need more control in the future but for him that was fine. "Maya, is it not the way we speak the same as Xyn?" Bending his body up onto the branch the boy hopped higher into the tree trying to avoid a retaliation from the girl that may cause him harm. The monkey vs. the lion was what it was now. However this monkey had claws as well. "His riddles are much more complex then even my own." Again Karite looked down on her with his silver eyes peering through the leaves like an apparition from her past. Then to quickly throw the girl off he brought back a conversation they had long before this curse happened. "Also do not forgot I challenged you to a fight. I want my fight Maya."

Orika was so intent on staring at Xyn and trying not to at the same time that she almost missed when he tore the eyepatch off to reveal a solid black eye. The girl merely cocked her head, for in her lifetime she'd seen enough variety of shinobi to not be freaked out at the sight of something new. "Why do you have that eye... Xyn?" the girl asked, her voice popping up like a dolphin after a day of tranquil seas. She'd had her reflection and now it was time to join the group again. Orika turned to her work and quickly bent the wire into a heart shape, then left it in the snow to cool. The top of the heart was a little unbalanced, most of the bend being towards the right side when viewed from the side with more rust, but it still looked like art nonetheless. Orika shut her rusty eyes and tried to recall the bits and pieces she'd heard. Something about a crush... Shisei crushing them all... Maya not being able to read... that weird look she gave her that Orika was too preoccupied to catch the meaning of... err, ah, Karite! Boy, she really needed to pay more attention to her surroundings. That was a bad shinobi! Orika meandered over the boy and smiling, shook her head and sighed as he talked of challenging Maya again. "You sure now is the best time?" the girl gently urged, "Not that I don't think you'll ever be able to fight her, but if you'll only stop to think for a moment, you'll see that at this point, you're no match for Maya-sempai. So train harder before fighting her... please?"

Xyn's neck nearly snapped around when he heard what Karite said. That boy challenged Maya... no, he had to focus now. Karite wasn't the problem. What he said about the way he spoke was somewhat true, but he was responding in tune with Shisei. Letting this boy talk the way he did without opposition was something Xyn couldn't allow. And to let someone like him teach Maya to read...

Xyn had to bite his lip to keep his words at bay, although not nearly as hard as he noticed Maya sometimes do. The only thing that calmed his tongue was Orika's voice. He'd heard little of it, and such a simple question, one he'd answered several times before.

"This eye... is a price I paid for knowledge." This was the answer he gave to everyone. it was as true as it was obscure. There was never any reason to give more information than that. Not forgetting about Shisei, he only slightly turned his shoulders and line of sight to acknowledge the girl's question, keeping his peripheral vision still aimed at the boy. He wanted to study his reaction, anticipate his actions. There was no doubt something sinister about him, and he'd draw it out by determining how this creature thought.

"That doesn't make any sense," Orika said, wrinkling her nose at his obscure answer. She was a person that liked direct, plain, and simple solutions. "What kinda knowledge would messing up your eye getcha?" The girl thought about this for a few minutes and then brightened her face as she raised her hand eagerly. "Wait, I got it!" she exclaimed, "You can now see more stuff out of that eye... but wait, that doesn't explain why you keep it covered up. If you got an eye than can see more stuff, is it something you don't like seeing? After all, you did say price. That's a really harsh word." Orika wanted to trace her fingers around that eye, to feel that it was real for herself. How strange that people would mess with their natural body all to gain a little edge over people who got their strength fair and square. Then again, weren't most clans started that way, with an individual or group that decided to integrate a sacred aspect of nature into themselves? All this thinking was making her head hurt. She plopped back on a pile of icy snow and started waving her hands in a circular motion. It had been a long time since she had played in the snow since nowadays they were always so busy training and whatnot. The packed crushed ice clung to her hair and the particles closest to her scalp melted into water so that it both cooled down her head and gave her a tiny headache. Such was the price she paid for fun.

"Everything has a cost." Xyn whispered in an almost inaudible tone, but still within a detectable decimal. People often forget their paths, lose their way. he didn't need this eye to see, because its existence kept him true to himself.

"That which is taken freely can be taken for granted and taken away. It is one of the most basic teachings." Reciting the text of the Kohon always filled Xyn's voice with more force, as if two people were speaking at once.

"If this Shisei wants to talk so highly, then I will be the cost of his words, or else he will think nothing of speaking." The world had to be balanced. He'd teach that to Shisei if nothing else.

Maya dropped her skins, her work, and snarled at Karite. Xyn wanted to deal with Shisei? Fine.

Karite would learn today his place in the pride. Signaling for Baki to stay, she walked towards the center of a small bit of clear land near the fire. Today this would end, and Karite would finally get it.

"I have no power over Xyn - he comes and goes as he wants. YOU want to live here and be part of my pride. The price for that is keeping the air clear of riddles. You want special treatment? It's not gonna happen, kitten. Get down from the tree and fight me then - let's see how tough you are. If you win, I concede and you, Orika, and Shisei can leave. But if I win....if I win, you'll keep your trap shut unless I speak to you, and if you ever talk to me out of turn, I'll kill you." Maya squared herself off, fighting with her fists today and not her weapon - she wouldn't kill him just yet. Soon...but not yet. Maya snapped her teeth and snarled again at the boy in the tree...completely ignoring Orika's warnings against the fight. Something in the back of her mind knew that she should have better control, but this was too far - Karite hadn't even been adopted, and now he was challenging the leader? Shuga would not have had it, and Maya wasn't going to tolerate it either. It was already enough that they knew she was illiterate, but to question a simple request? Even Shisei hadn't been stupid enough to question her!

Karite folded his arms across his chest as he listen to Orika's words. Somethings couldn't be helped and it showed with Maya's reaction. Death was about to welcome its son back into the fold very soon it seemed. Closing his eyes and letting one cold breath enter his body. He had made a mistake and that was about to be fixed. He figured one last breath before he died was all he needed. One last time before he would take his last breath. Closing his eyes he let his feet slip from the branch letting his body move through the air of its own accord. Landing lightly in the snow he walked towards Maya taking the band from his hair and letting it loose once again. It was the only way he could concentrate. Looking at Maya his entire body just wanted to melt into the snow but he showed no fear in front of Shisei nor Orika. This was his chance to prove he belonged her just as much as any other Shinobi. "Special treatment? I dont want special treatment Maya. Had that my whole life. I just want to be wanted. Not some punk you are doing a favor by letting live here. I want you to see I am more then the scum you have been order to train and watch over. I want you to see I am more then what you think of me, which is nothing." Karite was furious and it showed. He was not going to enjoy the pain this brought but he was going to enjoy the fight. Smiling he looked at Maya with his silver eyes. Squinting and laughing like he was among friends he rubbed the back of his head and put a thumbs up towards her. "Dont hold back ok?" The kid had to be crazy to be so happy knowing he was about to die. Karite was happy though, fighting was soothing to him. Pushing his body to the limit was all he wanted to do all the time. Having fun was his only purpose in life. Right now he was about to have more fun then he could muster. Hopefully this kitten had one more life left in him. Stretching one leg out at his side he drew one fist to his waist while putting a palm towards Maya Signaling his intent to fight, but he was not going to what for the one hit wonder to finish him. Dashing as quick as he could towards her he wasted no time in closing the gap. As he neared her he slid on the ground trying his best to keep enough speed. Using the snow the young kitten lifted a leg and aimed for Maya's gut. As tough as she looked he would end up breaking his leg before doing any real harm. "This better work or this is going to be finished rather quickly."

Maya kept her stance and watched him come, snarling at him. She hadn't been planning on taking it easy on him, but she wasn't gonna kill him...

Yet.

Maya caught his foot as he slid, shoving it to the side and roaring at him. "Harder, kitten!" She didn't give him a chance to respond before she met him on the ground, scuffling with him until she had a good position behind him. She wove her arms through his and pushed her palms against the back of his head, her legs tightening around him waist as she hissed into his ear.

"You're not the only one that wants to be wanted, kitty cat. It's not something you fight for, it's something you earn, and I'm never gonna want you if you keep disrespecting me and expecting me to give you respect in return. Doesn't work that way," she whispered harshly, and she tightened her grip on the boy. She was being harsh, and cruel, and possibly borderline psychopathic, but she had had enough of trying to work with him, only to have him undermine her or question her.

"In a pride, you don't question the top lion. In this family, I don't ever want to hear you question me without a damn good reason, and the only damn good reason you could possibly have is Kore - not even Orika comes between family," she snarled quietly, waiting, waiting, for his response...if there was one.

Karite was expecting something a little more fatal from Maya but what he got was something he didn't know the girl had in her. The woman had made Karite into nothing more than a human pretzel. She was good and it showed, this is the fight Karite had been hoping for all along. A fight he could not win but one he could walk away from with a lesson.

Smiling the boy rolled a silver eye back towards her. She wanted thing harder? Well the kitten was only happy to oblige.

Even now the boy knew he could say nothing to her. He had no response in words, but he could sure as hell respond to her through actions. He had disrespected her and forgotten his place but being quite wasn't something he was good at. She may have been top cat but where he came from he was the alpha wolf. It would take time to tame his wild side.

"Harder? If you say so Boss!" Rearing his green locks forward Karite let out a grunt as he brought the back of his head on a direct path with Maya's nose. Enough force and it would break and her eyes would water giving him enough breathing room to find another way to attack.

Maya grinned and moved her head from striking distance, snapping at Karite again and releasing him - though not before a small smile crossed her face. He did have spirit...

"Faster!" she snarled, pulling her legs towards herself as if she was going to stand, but whipping out one like lightning and letting it come crashing down on his shoulder. She pulled herself back up, all her actions complete feline grace, and stood tall for a minute, the morning sun accentuating her outline from behind. She gave him a feral smile, her eyes almost insane with sick, sadistic pleasure. Maya let herself fall into her customary crouch, turning her gaze from Karite to Shisei, the strange smile still twisting her face into a gruesome, almost nightmarish appearance. Her gaze returned to Karite, and she grinned at him some more.
