"Sure. A swim for us and a swim for the horses." Colonel clucked Radar along as the pony had tried to drop his head and graze on the sparse grass. He chuckled to himself and pushed Destiny into an easy trot.

Konoha glanced at the gelding but payed little other attention to him. She finaly nuzzled Path warmly. "But I'm glad your here."

The gelding raised his head and nickered a friendly greeting to Path. He was 15 and therefore no challange to a younger stallion. The bay was about as laid back as a horse could be before they were outright lazy as he continued his grazing.

"I'm glad I didn't send one of the young'uns after you. They would of turned tail and ran leaving you behind."Path snorted resting his muzzle on her back.

Gwen let Wildfire speed up slightly as the river came into view. She was content and happy.

((Yesterday was my real birthday. Which was why I was not on much.))

"But now you have to deal with them when we get back, and probably run a few of them off. They won't like you taking back the herd." She swished her tail lightly, scaring a fly away.

Destiny streched out to meet the river but Radar slowed, making for a funny bouncy gait. Colonel reined Destiny in for the pony and sped Radar up. "It's a wonder this river didn't run dry like the rest of them. We need a good storm to perk things up."
((Happy Birthday!!! blaugh ))

(I got to go to this bbq/concert thing and see a good friend of the family before he leaves for Tennessee he was the lead singer person in the band. My dad and uncle tried three times to pick me up and carry me out onto the dance floor and our friend who is like an uncle to me sung happy birthday.))

"Yeah hopefully this drought does not last much longer."Gwen said glancing at the sky.

"Probably, but I can take 'em and they know it."Path said thinking of the about 5 young stallions he was going to have to kick out of the herd.

((Sounds like fun.))
"There was a letter a few days ago from Fort Nix, west of here. They said a couple of big storms passed by and it rain on them for two straight days." Colonel had lost many horses to the drought and had found the game dewndling from the low water supply. "Those wild horses must have some tricks. I haven't seen one dead from the heat all summer." He looked over to her and reined Destiny in further as they were less than fifty feet from the river.

"They are young and will quickly forget their limits. If we leave them alone for too long there may not be a herd." Konoha was thinking of how she had seen a group of young stallions gang up on a reining stallion and split his herd only to loose the mares to other stallions.

Eclipse nodded in reply and said, "I'm glad." After that she simply continued walking, only sparing an annoyed glance at the gelding. Her repressed anxiety was only betrayed by her tail, which swished every few seconds, but she was careful not to hit Kalypso with it. She left Kalypso to his thoughts.

Kalypso sighed. He then noticed Eclipse's constant tail-swishing. "What's wrong?" he asked quietly. He too occassionally cast an annoyed glance at the gelding. 'So, he's trying to be friendly with Path, huh?' he thought to himself.

Eclipse let out a small, quiet snort. "I just feel nervous here. We're not meant to be confined to one area. It's unnatural." She paused for a while. "But thank you for asking; I would feel much worse if you weren't here."

Eclipse put her head down and started sniffing the ground; she had an itch on her back. She slowed her pace considerably and tried to find a good place to roll. Before she did, though, she paused and said, "I'd appreciate it if you could keep watch for me; it's dangerous to roll when there are... enemies around. Even so, my back has a horrible itch." She waited for his response, her head still a few inches above the ground.

Kalypso sighed. "I know what you mean...I feel alienated from the world here." he then smiled a bit. "You too....you've been so kind to me." He watched Eclipse sniff around, and nodded his head. "With pleasure. Go ahead and roll." He said, lifting his head to watch the men still prowling around the fenceline. He glanced over at Path and Konoha to check on them, then he chanced a quick glance at the grazing gelding, then returned to watching the men.

"I agree with you about the wild ones having some trick, if only Path could teach it to us. Maybe its because they can move on to whee there is more water while we and our horses are stuck in one place."Gwen said following Colonel's example and reining Wildfire in.

"Hopefully Flare, the one I put as the leader of the others, will remain faithful. He always has been a good kid so maybe he will keep the others in line."Path said hoping that what was a high possibility would not turn out to be true.

Without further ado Eclipse bent her front legs under her and rolled on her side, and gave herself a push so that she was straight on her back with her legs in the air for a moment before going back on her side. She did it again and this time fell back on her other side. She repeated this a couple of more times; satisified, she got back up.

"Ahhh... so much better. Thank you." She paused as she thought about what he said. She simply replied, "Well, you're worth being kind to." She shook her whole body, the excess dirt fell off of her and she sighed contentedly. Her coat was now much dirtier, and her mane was very tangled, but she could care less.

Colonel laughed at the idea. "I'm not sure how that would work. A horse teaching man? Sounds pretty silly to me." Reaching a large tree by the bank of the river Colonel stopped Destiny and slid off. "Here we are. Shade, a river and a day away from the Fort."

Konoha thought about the herd, running a list of young stallions through her mind. "Flare was a good choice. He listens more than the others and respects you."

Johnson walked by the pasture several times, at each one the gelding took no notice of the man. When he stopped and leaned against the fence the bay raised his head and looked at the man, nickerd to him, and then went back to grazing. Johnson stood by the gate and waited a few minutes then he whistled. The gelding raised his head and trotted over to the man, nickering again. Streching his neck over the fence the bay nuzzled the man and searched for treats. Johnson fed the horse a single mint and then stepped inside the pasture. With no halter or bridle to hold the gelding he simply waited for the horse to be done greeting him then ran his hands over his back, belly and legs. Moving slowly he continued up the gelding's neck and to his ears and face, lightly tracing his hands over every inch. The gelding stood still and put up no resistance to the touch. He leaned into the touch, contentedly when it brushed against his ears and face.

"You never know. I like it out here, it reminds me of the farm I used to live on."Gwen said dismounting.

"Yeah. If I ever step down from being lead stallion he would be one of my top choices of being my successor."Path said thinking of the chestnut colt, Flare.

Colonel let Destiny stand and lead Radar to the tree, tieing his lead rope to a low branch. "I wouldn't know, I've never lived on a farm." He smiled at her and led Destiny to stand by Radar tieing her a few feet away from the pony. "But I do like this river."

"You have many years before you even have to think about that. Flare will move onto his own herd before that." Konoha nuzzled him and watched the man and gelding by the edge of the fence.

Gwen tied Wildfire near the others. She returned the smile. She noticed Wildfire gazing towards the river. "Later you silly girl."she said giving her horse a hug.

'He will probably be the most successful of all those boys. The others think it is just strength that counts, but they don't realize that it takes kindness and caring also to be a good leader."Path said.
