Amaya looked over at him as she listened, though looked rather confused even after he stopped talking. There was a long, embarassing pause.

"... I have no idea what you just said." She gave him an appologetic look. "Sorry."

The sharkboy sighed heavily, beginning to wish he'd brought a pad of paper along with him like Sid had so cleverly thought to do. "Sowweh." Alec seemed to parrot back to the iguana girl, feeling added anxiety from the embarassment of his toothless speech. Hoping to avoid the aubject altogether, the teen offered the chip back instead.

So much for asking about his feelings for her. She sighed along with him, glancing at the chip bag as it was offered to her. Amaya hadn't tried to eat any junk food since her first change about a year ago.

Hesitantly she reached over and grabbed a single chip before popping it into her mouth.

.... Auuuuuugh!

She forced herself to swallow, albeit with a forced look on her reptilian features.

Alec had waited and watched for her reaction, unsatisfied and generally irritated with himself that he'd chosen the wrong snack food for both of them, even. "Awww!" He grunted and flung up his arms, looking genuinely upset. "A' meh a' shoov' brough' le'ish inshead." Of course with his flustered disposition he began spitting farther than before, though thankfully it wasn't in anyone's direction. "A c'n effen do a date righ'." The teen muttered and considering just heading to the caf that moment to get something real to eat.

Leave it to me to ruin a date without even spitting a lot! Zach's gonna be pissed at me when he finds out how much of a wanker I am! He continued to mentally kick himself, missing the entire point of origin of the conversation.

The girl blinked, rather surprised by his reaction. "It's alright, I don't care about the food or anythin'." She said honestly, though didn't elaborate about her previous line of conversation.

As jittery as he was, Alec was determined to stop acting like a blundering fool and to calm himself down to a reasonable state. "Showweh 'Maya. Ye w'mmeh go somewheh else?" The teen attempted a smile. It seemed it was getting harder and harder to please the iguana girl these days, she was always so down and lost in her own thoughts.

"Uh..." Amaya began, looking out over the canopy of trees. "I guess we could go some place warmer..." She trailed off, looking back over to him. Ugh, she was being such a downer.

But still... she had to ask him before this date was up.

Figuring he should cut his losses while he still could, the teen got up from his spot on the rocky ground and waited for Amaya to follow. The prospect of turning this date around were slim to none in his mind as he quietly stared down at iguana girl who seemed nearly impossible to please. Well, Zach never said the date had to go well now, did he? ... Right?

The teen watched him stand up, yellow eyes trying to read his expression.

Great, now he's probably annoyed at you. She thought to herself as she stood up with the blanket, a frown on her reptilian features. But like Alec, she figured if the date was going downhill then what was there left to loose?

After a deep breath she met Alec's gaze as best she could. "Alec, I have to ask you something."

Reaching out to offer help in lifting her up or at least folding the blanket back up to take back, Alec tried to beat the disappointment and utter sense of failure that was eating away at him to make way for his characteristic optimism. "A' be' ish wo-meh a' ye plashe, we c'm 'ead theh..." Before he could begin what would most likely feel like a very long trek back, the teen was struck by a serious-sounding question. Again, his nerves began to get the best of him as he became jittery once more. "Uh.... kay?"

It took her a moment to realized what he was saying before she figured it out. But before she asked her question she held the blanket out to him - unable to fold it because of her claws and clumsy hands.

"I... uh..." Amaya paused for a moment, trying to force herself to ask the question that had been avoided most of the night. "Alec, do you... like me?" Slowly she forced herself to look up at him so she could read his expression.

She prepared herself for the worst, as all the signs she was getting from him pointed to her worst fears.

Alec quickly busied himself with folding the blanket, turning the fabric over and over in his hands as he waited for the impending doom. He was always made to think that serious questions never ended well, especially ones that come from girls, and this fact never changed regardless of his current situation.

The question left him with no less of a sense of panic as he desperately tried to think of what the 'right' thing to say was. It was true, he did care for Amaya a lot more than any of the other people on the island. She was a good friend, someone to care for and receive caring from but did this constitute as liking? Liking as in love was out of the question. Alec didn't have the capacity to love, he was sure of it. He was only a punk kid, what the hell would he know about love?
He cared for Amaya but did he care about her more than say, all the other girls he'd met? Was this even about her as a girl (or whatever was left of the girl inside her) or her as a friend or her as just-another-damn-person-stuck-on-the-island?

He was confused. So confused that he was beginning to develop the largest headache he'd had since his last bout of pummelling. He wanted to ask for clarification but he could almost predict the results to a 'T'. He could imagine her frowning, looking away, walking away, and those eyes like a broken china doll...

He hadn't even noticed that he'd been wringing the blanket nervously between his fists as he mustered a response. What a question. Was there even a right answer?

"Well, ye." He simply responded like the pause in the conversation was as natural as falling rain. Surprisingly, he didn't even look away though he felt more like running for his life down the steep hillside rather than deal with a question like that at the moment. Inwardly cringing and bracing himself for the worst reaction possible, the sharkboy straightened out the folds in the blanket and casually glanced down the path they'd be taking to return to the Village.

But despite whatever inner turmoil the shark boy might have been experiancing, the only nervous thing on the outside was him wringing the blanket. His answer was too casual - she took it as a misunderstanding.

"No, I mean do you really like me... y'know..." Amaya trailed off again, her voice barely audible. "... love."

Alec had thought he'd dodged the bullet for the time being. He'd answered the question honestly, why was she prying for more? All in all, his nervousness was turning into anxiety quicker than what his mind could fathom and his means of making sense of things, his only method of dealing came into play.

He stared for a moment, eyes narrowed as he tried to scrutinize the question that had been laid out plain and simply and found no way out of it. She'd said that word now and there was no going back, his blood already ran cold with fear.

"A...." He felt his voice seize up in his throat and he made a weak effort to force it out. "A d'NEH!" All at once the shark boy gave a furious frown and stomped off down the dirt path they'd came from.

Amaya jumped slightly at his voice and expression, tail giving a quick lash at the rocks behind her as she watched him turn and storm off down the pathway. She stood dumbly for a moment before running after him... or rather a slow jog with how cold it was outside.

"Alec!" She called out again, waiting until they were off the rocks to get around him and in his way. "Please give me a straight, honest answer! I need to know." Her inhuman eyes pleaded with him, begging.
