Haldis licked some cookie crumbs from her fingers. "They're good, very good." She sighed, "I thought the glowing might have been too dramatic, but I do like the fancy effects some days."
Cookie smiled under her wrinkles. "Me, too. That's why most of the rest of that cabinet is flash powder and explosives. Or--God--" she laughed. "I have a specialty PE bomb in there. The fuse is probably rotted away and I'd never use it, but its cousins made for some fun times back in the Black Mask age. I kept it for the memories.

"Have to admit, the glowing was pretty neat. Did you see how fast the boy ran? I wonder if he even knew what he was saying, it came out so fast. That was awesome. More cookies?" The next tray was done, and she switched it out with the third.

"He ran pretty fast." Haldis nodded, "Yes, Please." This time she waited for the cookie to cool. She kicked her legs a few times then tilted her head. "Black mask age?" She asked curiously.

She nodded. "Oh, yeah. I take history classes every once in a while, see how people's views have changed over the years. Sometimes I find out some weird facts in hindsight, stuff I lived through but didn't fully understand at the time. All kinds of things come out after people's grandkids die, although a lot more information probably disappears over that time...

"One of my professors--it's funny because they never think I know more than they do--called it the Black Mask Age, all caps. He specialized in the history of supers, wrote books and everything. Totally human, but a wannabe. The Early Years were before the first supers went public, when all there were were rumors of fantastic coincidences and people who couldn't exist, the rumors people put down as hallucinations. The Golden Age was about 50 some odd years, when there were tons of brightly-caped superheroes cropping up and any corresponding villians were easily dealt with. Then the Incident, the first time a villian killed a hero and they couldn't cover it up. The guy went on and on about a 'loss of innocence.' Cookie shook her head and bit into another cookie. "Then Silver Age, when some heroes started wearing black and anti-heroes got popular, villians got sneaky and more people in general got killed. Guy had some weird Victorian idea that the black was in mourning for the first guy to get killed. Anyway... I don't remember all of it, but then there were some wars and stuff... I didn't really pay attention til he started talking about the Mimic Wars, 'cause that's when most of my family got killed, and then there was stuff all over the world after that that no one could keep straight...

"After things started settling down, everyone noticed that there was a lot of undercover hero work going on. Simple things, like finding kids in alleys and getting them food and warm shelter, but sometimes somebody stopped runaway vehicles. The economy sucked, and people hadn't been making things to really last before the wars, so it was all breaking down. No spare parts except from other of the same type, and you know what wore out on everything first? Brakes pads." She shook her head again. "Well, no one could afford a flashy costume by then, and most of us didn't want them. Who wants to be recognized? That's the reason you wear a mask in the first place. So... yeah, we all just wore black domino masks, or a kerchief with eyeholes if hair was an issue. Sometimes it was ski masks, if you wanted to hide--or me, sometimes, 'cause my skin is kinda obvious. For the most part, though, we'd just be people in ordinary clothes. Gotta do something, put on your mask, and when you're done you take it off with no one the wiser. Even if they were, well..."

She started laughing. "Hally, do you know about San Los Angel? That new city they had later for all the refugees after California dropped off into the ocean?"

Hally listened with interest, enjoying her cookie while she did. "I must have missed the black mask age of earth, I believe I was busy elsewhere." She tilted her head to the side. "And what was this city of San Los Angel?"

((Yep, I did, sorry Crumpet. Thanks for calling me on it.)

The man stared at Pendari like she was an idiot. And then realization dawned. "Who the hell are you?"

Hally listened with interest, enjoying her cookie while she did. "I must have missed the black mask age of earth, I believe I was busy elsewhere." She tilted her head to the side. "And what was this city of San Los Angel?"

Cookie chuckled, remembering. "Oh, San Los Angel. What a fun mess that was. The moment masks showed up there, the folks in charge started rounding them up and locking them away, then shipping them out. We didn't hear about it for months, with communication so bad, but when the outcasts found their way to the other cities word got around."

She started laughing outright, breaking character and speaking in her real voice. "Oh, Hally, it was so fun. Masks poured in from all over the country--me from Florida, but you even had the New Yorkers out there--and we all brought extra masks to hand out to the normal folk. For days, every single person in that dump was wearing a mask. To and from work, school, oh, we even had the infants in masks. It was awesome. Some of the truly weird looking people came, too, ones you know without a doubt didn't belong there. I swear, I even saw ex-supervillians there, some of the more famous ones. This one guy was actually I giant lizard I knew lived in Hong Kong, we caught up on the times... Us obvious ones, we were making a point. We didn't have to know each other, we didn't have to live in their dink city, us masks would stick together. And we wouldn't put up with that kind of discrimination. The Union City episode, the thing in Nepal, not gonna happen again.

"Those fools in office got rounded up by their own citizens and made to walk the streets, the only ones without masks so everyone would know who they were. With all the money we poured into their economy just by being there a few months, they were all on their own feet within two years and it never happened again. Ahh, those were fun days..."

Hally smiled, "Sounds like fun fun indeed." She whipped the crumbs from her fingers, and looked around the kitchen. "Are you sure there is nothing you need or want to know?"

"Oh no, there's both." Her eyes twinkled. "I'm just not going to ask."

Hally sighed and leaned against the counter, "You're no fun."

"Pfft. I'm plenty of fun, I just play different games. I like webs of information, too, but I like being the center of it all. With you, I'll never be that, so there's no goal."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 27, 2008 10:08 pm

Haldis shrugged. "I don't try to be the center, it just happens." Her eyes glowed white for a moment and she chuckled. "Lux is coming coming, but I don't like him. We should fix this ship. Or just eat it whole, until there is only one person left."

Cookie started cleaning up so she could make a real dinner. "Fix it, then. If there's only one person left, there's no one to talk to. No fun, if you ask me. Why would you only leave one person?"
PostPosted: Sun Jan 27, 2008 10:32 pm

"If you've eaten them all, you don't need to talk to them anymore. You'll already know everything they'd say." Haldis shrugged, "As for one person, you always need a person to carry you away."

Cookie pondered that a moment.

"No," she said quietly. "You do, but I don't. All I need is some entertainment, and I can shut out people long enough to let what they say surprise me. I'd let them all live and regret the loss of those killed among them, if only because it makes the rest so predictable. Only you seem to need someone to help you get around, and I don't know why."

Haldis shrugged, "I wouldn't know where to go. And one person could take me somewhere new, somewhere interesting. The murderer can travel to lots of places I've never been."

"I see. Do you love anyone, Hally?"
