I can think of worse ways to die than being sacrificed.
Unless you're a virgin sacrifice, and a guy.
But yeah, I like my history and culture non-sugar coated.
The other day, in my religion-magic-culture class, we watched a video on Voodoo rituals. One of the rituals involved chickens being sacrificed in a somewhat gruesome manner. Everyone in the class was going on about how sick and wrong the voodoo practicioners were for killing poor, innocent little animals. But not me. People were pissed off at me for not being horrified at the animal sacrifices.
But think about it:
A dozen free-range, realitivly healthy chickens get sacrificed to represent the power of life in a ritual honoring the gods. Meanwhile, back in the states, millions of chickens get crammed into filthy overcrowded cages where they'll live for a few years eating low-grade feed mixed with their own droppings, only to be plucked alive and chopped up into Chicken McNuggets. Where's the animal cruelty now?

"Broilers" actually live for a scant three months. After that, the feed-to-meat ratio drops to where it is more economical to slaughter the chickens than to continue raising them to adulthood. Poor bastards.
