“Never again…” Hikaru’s tone and demeanor softened in an instant; he raised a hand under his brother’s chin and gently lifted his head until their eyes met. “You’ll never be lost again – If only mother hadn’t forced me away...” There was a catch in Hikaru’s voice.

Once more he let himself flush at his brothers actions. "She didn't want me to catch the illness you had. I didn't want to be away from you but she didn't want us to both be sick," Kaoru replied, watching his brother. Usually they said one another's name by now, but Kaoru had other plans. "Oh, Kaoru, thank you so much... for getting better so quickly," he whispered, so only the girl beside them could hear, purposely using his own name.

The smirk faded again. Kozue looked away from the twins. It was too much. Too much like the closeness there used to be between Kozue and...her. The one Kozue couldn't even speak the name of, even after nine years. The one who had been driven by her own insanity and their father's cruelty to tear away from, well, everything.
For a second, Kozue felt angry. Why should they apparently get what Kozue had lost that day on the bridge?
Because they don't have depression and they don't have abusive parents, said a much calmer voice in Kozue's mind, and the anger faded. She would not hate the twins for maintaining the brotherly (or in Kozue's case, sisterly) love that Kozue had seen leap into the abyss.
((I can be dramatic too.))

amusedandconfused Kozue looked over at the girl. It was the one who'd cried. She frowned. "Nice try, but you don't seem dumb. You know this is your purse. Which I picked up when you left it here. And I'm not sure whether or not I'm nice enough to give it back." Kozue looked the purse over herself. "I mean, it's really pretty. You have good taste."

"Whatever," Kozue mumbled. Wonderful, now she was in a rotten mood. She glanced up at the twins again. "Did you say his name was Kaoru? Strange, he looks more like a Hikaru to me."

Hikaru paused, looking with full seriousness at the girl. Then, suddenly, he pulled a small round mirror out of the pocket of his jacket and looked deeply into it. “Ah!” He exclaimed then looked up at his brother, concerned. “She’s right! Hikaru…” There was a tremble in his lower lip and the hand holding the mirror shook slightly, even as the other arm slid from off his brother’s shoulders. “Mom and Dad gave us the wrong names!”

Kozue felt her spirits lift. She like these guys, they had a good sense of humor. She decided to play along. "Oh, I'm sorry!" she moaned mellowdramatically. "Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything!"

Kaoru couldn't help but nod, before moving to hug his brother. "Its all right. We... can just... call one another by each others name! No one would realize it anyway," he replied in earnest.

Kozue pouted. "Those are your real names, aren't they?" she asked, trying to sound like she really was mad. "You were trying to trick me." She turned away with her pout, mostly so the twins wound't see he beginning to giggle and ruin the effect.

The elder twin settled into the warm embrace for a moment before straightening and pulling back slightly. He smiled at his brother, wiping away an imagined tear, before turning to the girl. Hikaru’s face was serious once more. “Yes, Miss… just now we were.” He stepped toward her and held out a hand for her’s as he bowed. “Please accept our apologies – I am Hitachiin Kaoru…”

Kaoru smiled and held his hand out as well, bowing slightly. "I'm Hitachiin Hikaru. We really are sorry we upset you," he replied, offering her a warm smile as he looked up from his bow.

Kozue turned and looked at them again. She had a very good sense of intuition...and she really did think, somehow, that the one claiming to be Kaoru was Hikaru and the one claiming to be Hikaru was Kaoru. Of course, being something of a liar herself, she had to respect the prank. "Okay..." She turned around to face them again. "I'm Kotsubaki Kozue. Nice to meet you Kaoru and Hikaru. If you're not lying to me."
