We don't get the .1 channels and stuff like that because we have satellite TV. I'd either need nothing or cable to get those.

My current benchmark for Blu-Ray is the new Star Trek movie. It looks astounding in HD. The thing about Blu-Ray, while the resolution is great, is that it's ******** buggy as hell. There's very lax or few standards for producing a Blu-Ray disc relative to a DVD so if you own a Blu-Ray player you have to constantly download and install firmware updates which is something that a lot of salespeople just do not tell you. It can be a nightmare sometimes working at a video store dealing with customers that have no idea what they just bought.

For blue-ray, i've decided to wait on that. Not wanting to really spend a heck of a lot of money on a player. Their prices are insane. I just had to replace my DVD player and the sales clerk had no idea what a 5 cable connection was. rolleyes

But blue-ray..... going to wait a little for it to go down in price and let them grow out the kinks first..

HD Wii is supposed to be awesome. Though sense I'm broke and am finally going to be able to afford the wii sense it's going down in price..... I'm going with the less expensive one!

I'll get HD Wii when I have more money... and well.... my TV and DVD might be HD but my Satalite connection surely isn't.

I don't own a Blu Ray player or any Blu Ray disks, I only se them when hanging around with other people. So I'm blissfully unawares of technical difficulties. 4laugh
These days I'm just not watching a lot on tv. I get a lot of disposable media from the internet for which definition is not an issue, though I do have a high-def monitor (it's used for work, not play, though). The more get into foreign television, which you can't import in HD, the the less I bother upgrading.

Yeah, the best idea is really to wait for the technology to sort itself out and the prices to drop. It'll be interesting to see how the Blu-Ray manufacturers respond to the $299 PS3. It's pushing a lot of fence sitters over the edge.

My Blue-ray player was $150 and no problems so far, but truth is I don't own any blue-ray disks yet so I've just been enjoying rewatching my DVDs in some startling damn clarity.

Best one so far was "A Hard Days Night" after I realized I could read what was pinned on a bulletin board in the background of one scene.

There aren't any TV shows I go out of my way to watch. Office, 30Rock and all that stuff are so far into their series that I wouldn't know what was going on anyways. I basically watch daytime TV (it's on in the background while I'm doing housework or using the PC) and an occasional family guy.

I'm so boring. We don't have Tivo/DVR either.

Well be sure to read up on how your player receives updates before you go putting any Blu-Ray discs in it. It's also a good idea to look up Blu-Ray review sites, because they don't just review the movie but how good the transfer is and what glitches might exist.

The interpolation feature for standard DVDs is pretty sweet, eh? If you think that's good though, wait until you put a real Blu-Ray in. It eclipses the interpolation. xd

I believe mine updates through the connection to my receiver, but I'll have to check on that.

I'm getting "UP" on Blue-Ray next week whee And asked for Star Trek on Blue-ray for Christmas.

I'd really like to get the Wizard of Oz on blue-ray but it seems the only BR version available comes in this big package of bells and whistles I don't want or need.

I personally don't give two rips about Blu-ray or high def or any of that stuff. If I had the income to have all Blu-ray, then sure I guess I'd do that. But I have a army of DVDs and I sure as hell am not going to re-buy them all for Blu-ray just because then I'd have even "better" picture. Because then I'd have to research every single Blu-ray disc I buy, compare it to my type of player, and get a new TV (and cords!) all together.

When I walk around Best Buy and the Blu-ray players are playing Pirates of the Caribbean or some such, on half the TVs the footage looks like crap because people don't know what they are doing. 1080p Blu-ray images look weird as s**t on any 120hz 1080p HDTVs. If you have a, lets say, Sony LCD hooked up to a Blu-Ray player then your footage will look pretty alright. If you have a Sony XBR LCD hooked up to a Blu-ray player you'll get a clear picture. A really, really clear picture to the point where the footage looks strange, as if it is almost less then 24fps - especially noticeable with camera movement. It is distracting and that is not how the film makers want you to experience their movie. Judder is not necessarily a bad thing, and most Blu-ray players/disc work way too hard to smooth and streamline images that should not be streamlined. Move your hand in front of your face from side to side, eyes faced forward. Does the hand stay in focus? Of course not. On most Blu-ray platforms such a action filmed would be clear through all motion and focus, working to "fix" the directors (and camera's) plane of focus, speed, and motion and that is not right. If you don't know what you're getting you'll be stuck with $2,000+ worth of equipment and films that look little like how you remember them.

Now back to the games because I missed out on that! Halo is not 007: Golden Eye, but it is a mighty fine bit of fps gaming. It is in my experience that people who hate Halo do so because they can't get a hold of the dual analog sticks, and thus aiming, and/or they don't realize they are playing inverted. I play inverted because I have a strange brain, but you will want to kill yourself and those around you if you are playing inverted and do not want to be. A lot of people also hate Halo because it has actually challenging AI and/or they have had frustrating experiences with online play. Then, of course, some people just don't really like first person shooters. Many such people heard the hype on Halo, gave it a try, and thought it was the game and not their preference that made them dislike it.

But love Halo, hate Halo, for whatever reasons! I fall into the love category myself and if any of you sods have xbox Live and ODST we should throw down some Firefight.

I love halo too. The only thing with ODST is I wish that there was a matchmaking option. Don't have many friends that have it and the ones do its hard to all be on at the same time.

Lately though I've been into Final Fantasy XII. Never beat it when I first got it and I figured i should I beat it at least once. Glad I brought it out since it reminded me how much I liked it. I can't wait for XIII since it will be on Xbox.

I don't know why there isn't a matchmaking option for Firefight but GOD could you imagine some of the people you'd get stuck with? The most basic Halo Firefight matchmaking team would be; You, someone ungodly better then you, a 12 year old boy who won't shut the hell up, and someone without a flippin' mic.

I still think that's better than playing by myself. I haven't played ODST since I beat it for the second time.I played it non stop for a while and kinda needed a break. I'm sure in a month or so I will be back to playing it a bunch.

I am Firefight crazy at the moment, I love survival modes. Left 4 Dead's left much to be desired (although still fun), and Nazi Zombies are always a good thing - but with Firefight you actually have the ability to, you know, survive, for long periods of time with actual team work. When you pick it up again, we should totally play!

Re: Blu Ray.

I see no difference and don't think it makes a movie any better. When asked if I owned The Dark Knight, I said no and I wasn't interested. The person who asked responded that the Blu-Ray is "freakin' sweet". To which I asked if somehow Blu-Ray made the movie less bad.

I'm completely happy with DVD quality. Hell, I'm happy with VHS quality.
