"Contrary to popular belief, Luca has his own life and job as well," Lori teased. He didn't mind eating alone, really. He got time to think. But anyway he wasn't alone. Pixie was good company too. The little wyvern got the pineapple in two attempts, likely because the first try bumped his nose
He shook his head then. "Definitely the first HQ has ever seen. As far as anyone knew or was willing to say, there was no such think as a half-selkie. There were humans, there were selkies, that was it. The fae gene wasn't just recessive, it didn't pass. Ever. As far as the world knows, you're the only one." Pixie hopped off of Lori's shoulder and landed awkwardly, then made a wobbly beeline for Maia's sandwich. Lori scooped him up, put him back on his shoulder, and offered him a bit of chicken. He seemed satisfied for the moment.
"Definitely. It's always exciting, but it barely ever happens. I mean, the Bureau has existed in some form since the time humans split off from the rest of existence, to find someone entirely new is incredible. Your genes are... intense. You're more selkie than human. The selkie's so strong it's overwritten what the world of supernatural entities has understood as the only chance. So you're kind of a big deal." He gave Maia a smile.

"He sticks to you like glue whenever I see him," Maia smiled. "Going to see him over the weekend?"
Huh. Well. The gene didn't pass at all? That was strange. "Why?" She asked. "There's all these stories about selkies falling in love with humans and visiting their children, so I assume those children were human. But my mother obviously took me with her, when she left." She watched Pixie and smiled at the tiny Dragon. She held up another piece of pineapple for him.
"I told Toby when he brought me here that new things might be under his nose. I didn't think I'd be the new thing."

Lori smiled fondly. "Yeah, definitely."
Then it was back to genetics. "I'm not sure. I guess it's just rare. Incredibly rare. I'm sure there are more halfies out there but they're too ashamed to admit it, or maybe they don't know. If you can pass for selkie, why worry about a human half? Now there'll be more research to be done. I'm curious as to how you were born. The average selkie is born wrapped in their pelt, or if the mother is in seal-form as a seal themselves, so it's possible the male genetic donor was aware somehow." Pixie leaned forward too far for the pineapple and Lori caught him without looking. He let the dragon lean against his hand to retrieve the pineapple, and then steadied him back on his shoulder.
"Well, lucky for you it's all anonymous. Nobody's going to come looking for you. That's how we do it here with a new discovery. I promise you won't get any unwanted attention. ...at least not from any other group."

"Like me, I didn't know," Maia took a bite of her sandwich, but was clearly listening. He brought up an interesting point. Hm. Selkies were born with their pelts, and she had one-- "It's possible. I never met him, though. My parents were pretty against my interacting with humans."
"Oh good. Here I was worried I'd have to change my name," She teased. "You guys are good at keeping secrets."

"That's probably for the best," Lori admitted. He took a bite of his sandwich and swallowed before continuing. "Human men don't exactly have the best track record with selkie women, so I can understand their avoidance. I'm glad you came here, though. Not just for this. I've never seen Toby this content all the time."

Maia smiled, noticing the subject change. "Coming here was the best decision I've ever made," she said. "I've never been as happy as I am now. And Toby," she said, smile brightening. "I think it's the same way for him."

Now was not the time to mention being human, having a family and a fiance. For as long as Lori had actually known Toby, it was true. He was unmistakably giddy, and not with that fake overtone he got sometimes. Toby was legitimately happy.
"I think so too. You're good for him for sure."

"What about you and Luca?" Maia asked suddenly. "You guys looked pretty cozy at the party. You seem happy, Lori."

Lori's smile only grew. He really was incredibly, desperately fond of Luca. The whole world went away when he held him. He'd never had anything like that before.
"Yeah. He makes me happy. It's been a long time since I've dated and the last go didn't end well."

Maia smiled, finishing her sandwich and offering a grape to Pixie. "He's a nice guy," she said. "I like him." She looked to Lori. "What kind of research will you do?" she asked. It seemed to be a better question than "Do you love him?".

Lori helped Pixie onto a finger and held him out to take the grape, then put him back on the table. Grapes were almost too big for him. He made a mess of them every time.
"I'm glad. Toby told me he approves too, so I guess I don't have to break up with him," Lori joked.
"Oh, um. Well. We'll be studying your genes further, and then we'll be trying to find others like you, or mentions of them in literature." It would be more difficult without Maia's parents to question, but the implications of their deaths went far beyond just questioning. It would be ridiculous to even think it.

"Toby approves?" Maia wasn't surprised. She'd seen how the elf had interacted with Dari, and She thought that was a large factor in that approval. "He certainly made fast friends with Dari."
"Can I help? I mean, I don't have access to all the literature you do."

"He said he does," Lori replied with a nod. "Yeah, I'm sure that has something to do with it. Dari doesn't have many friends outside of us."
He paused them. "Ahm! Well. If I can think of anything you can help with, I'll definitely grab you. Have you talked to anyone about becoming an ambassador yet?"

"He'll make more friends now I think," she said. They'd have to convince him to paint up more, or at least use the projector, maybe set him up on friend dates? Was that a thing?
"Only to Toby. I'm a bit nervous about going to anyone else."

"You shouldn't be! You're pretty much one of us now anyway," Lori reasoned, "Toby's gone through all of the training, though. He does were-relations, between clans and with newfound weres and whatnot. Between all of us we'll get you in there." If she made the grade of course.
