I've wanted to be a cartoonist since I was 3. I've been drawing cartoons ever since I could hold a pencil. All I do is draw and write all farking day, when I'm not watching cartoons, reading cartoons, or playing cartoons.
I used to think I had a shot at it. But now, everyone has farking fanfics and fanart and fancomics. It's the age of anime. It used to be a unique thing to want to grow up and draw comic books, now every farking body wants to be a "manga artist". You can be a "manga artist" by winning a friggin contest now. I personally know people who are now somehow working in the industry. My former best friend is publishing how-to-draw-manga books. Two of my good friends are good friends with people who draw the Archie comics Sonic the Hedgehog comics, a job I was always wishing for when I was still in grade school.
I might be a good artist, but I'm at the bottom of the good artist barrel. Out of all my friends in the Sonic community, They all draw professional quality stuff, while i'm just "good" at it. When they're picking the next staff member of the Sonic Comic team, they're gonna be overlooking me.
I spent a good portion of the day watching the episode commentary on a bunch of Futurama episodes, and wishing that I'd somehow get discovered and become a staff writer and be able to write some episodes and contribute some ideas and be one of the guys laughing and having fun talking about the episodes I helped write on a future dvd. If that run-on-sentance says anything about my writing skills, well, it says it. I'll never be more than a fan with a bunch of crappy half-written fanfics and a drawing style that looks too much like anime to ever be considered original.
As far as I'm concerned, I suck at everything I want to accomplish.

Well think about it this way, how many people who claim to be 'manga artists' will really stick with it? How many of them have the dedication that you do? How many will still like that Idea in a year?
Just keep trying. The art Community is really harsh. You just have to learn to look past some of the critics. You'll find a place to do the things you want to. The option may just not be open to you yet.

My ex best friend was always jealous because she thought I was the better writer and artist. But I'm not the one with her own freelance animation studio.
And then there's my ex-boyfriend who makes hundreds of dollars a month in the online comic community. And all of the girls he dumped me for are making comic money too, tied in to his little somewhat very large sprite comic community.
They all went to art school. They have degrees that say they're better at drawing than me. I'm... a geologist.

But Miri, you're an awesome artist! gonk heart I'd kill to have you skills! Just because you didn't go to art school doesn't mean you'll never get a job! You'll probably end up finding something that's perfect for what you wanna do! heart

Okay Miriam.... I bet less then half of all the art majors that graduate from my school will contuine with art as their caree. Its amusing. You've always wanted to be a comic artist. Ever since I was little I wanted to be a geologist or a meterologist. (No I'm not just saying that to try and prove a point or anything. I really wanted to be.) But I was always told that females have no place in science, and that our job was in the home or teaching.... Yea stupid little small town thoughts where.....grrr..... Anyway, I gave up on that, but I still persued feilds in science. Except with Marine Biology. Then people shot that down too. So now I'm sitting here, as an artist. I have problems drawing cartoons, and I can't do realism well either.
When I was six I was studing weather patterns as other things like that. I really wish that I hadn't given up on that now.
Wow... I kinda got off-topic... but still on topic in a weird sort of way....
Anyway, a Degree is just a peice of paper. Art is something that can be delevoped in to something better. Dont let them stop you.
