Yes, I find hats and scarfs to be great. They're small projects so you're not working for eons on something. They usually don't take much yarn so they're cost effective and they're a good way to practice/learn new designs or patterns.
Some scarf /hat patterns I like
Hats:
-
Basic Ribbed Hat Knit Flat and works up quick
-
Rugged Ribbed HatOnce you venture into the land of circular needles/double points, you'll have tons of hat patterns to choose from. Here's the
one I knitted for myself last winteras for scarves, here's some that are pretty straightforward that I've made
-
Wavy Scarf SOOooo much easier than you'd think. Just be sure to use a solid color or you'll lose the pattern in the yarn
-
Column of Leaves Scarf I made this for a friend one year. It's a bit more difficult than wavy but it's a pretty scarf.
-
Ribbed Keyhole Scarf I make this one longer than the one in the picture. I don't like super short scarves
-
Manly Scarf although the pictures of the scarf on this website are crummy. She needed to do it in a SOLID color to show the stitch pattern
-One of my first scarves ever was
this kit that I purchased online. Came with the yarn I needed and the pattern. I still have that scarf
smile -
Textured ScarfI could talk about patterns and junk all night so I'll stop there.. for now.
I was going to knit some gifts for family and friends but I feel like people think I'm "cheap" or "lame" when I make something for them. They don't realize the work that goes into that stuff. It took me two months of off and on knitting for that gren scarf I linked earlier. It would have taken me a week or two if I wasn't distracted by other things going on but still.. I wish more people appreciated my handmades.
